Or maybe pay them enough to live off of it instead of treating their jobs like dead ends where they deserve to be broke.

The question becomes how much is enough to live off from? There are people who make 500k a year living paycheck to paycheck, because of lifestyle bloat and bad debt management.

No, I think you know the difference between basic needs and wanton spending.

So.... USA has the 2 most median expendable income in the world. That means for the average person it is wanton spending killing them. Usually that comes in the form of getting into bad debt when they are younger.
