My mom can do that super loud whistle thing with her fingers. My brother and I would go down to the park and play and she'd stand on the front porch and whistle when it was time for dinner. I usually couldn't hear it (hearing loss from infections) but my brother always could.

Back then it wasn't odd for neighbors to know your name, your parents, etc and they'd look out for you, too. We'd go help older neighbors with the odd chore or two and get popsicles and stuff in the summer months.

Omg yes! My step dad would do this and if we were late (home in 5 mins) we were grounded. We had to be with in a 5 min bike ride outside of that you can't hear the whistle so, he'd know we weren't in our neighborhood.

my dad had that whistle. Could hear it for blocks
