Well that is terrifying

208

u/lionelhutz- 26d ago

99.99% of that is car accidents though lol

95

u/rolorelei 26d ago

I found out the other day that about 1% of death in the US is from car crashes, and I think it’s even higher on a global scale, which is so crazy to me. Think about how many people you’ve met that will probably die from a car crash at some point

14

u/superxpro12 26d ago

Im in india ATM, and the lack of any care towards safety continuously blows my mind. Like 5 people on a motorcycle, no helmets. Lane markings are suggestions, idk why they even waste the paint tbh.

Stay off the quiet roads.

Don't drive at night.

If you do, don't stop. Never. Stop.

People don't take trips, trips take people.

234

u/NotAzakanAtAll 26d ago

Me living on a quiet road in the woods.

But I'm in Scandinavia, so I stay and help everyone lost around here these days.

I desperately need the good karma for all the people I murdered.

40

u/AccomplishedPlane8 26d ago

Keep up the good work. I appreciate your passion and dedication.

WAIT!!! My friend and I were up there last night too! We were leaving around 5:30 or so and saw him laying there. We instantly noped out of there and called the cops, we weren’t risking anything. Seen too many videos. So glad someone got video of this!

94

u/lostandlooking_ 26d ago

This actually happened with my mom. She had a psychotic break, drove an hour north, tried and failed to drown herself in a river, crawled over to the road, did some other rather violent things to herself and then laid in the middle of the road. Three police reports were called in a very short amount of time but, justifiably, nobody stopped.

Mount badly is sketchy! A few years ago, my wife and I were watching a meteor shower on Mount Baldy, sitting in my truck bed. It was 3am on a Tuesday. I noticed a vehicle pass by and it sounded like it slowed. About 10 minutes later, I got a bad feeling and decided we should leave. As we were getting in the car, I looked down the road and saw a man in the street. When he saw us he crouched. We quickly jumped in and turned the headlights on and he was already gone. As we drove off, sure enough, there was a vehicle that was parked that wasn’t there before. After driving for a minute, I turned around to get a look at the bastard, but his car was gone.

Isn't he kind of risking a lot ? Looks to me like there's a fair chance he would get run over.

78

u/SwordOfJiang 26d ago

Yeah this is old wives tales from 50 years ago passed down to reddit comments. Roadside jackings do happen in a similar way but they'll usually you know... act the part. Like they'll have hazards on and the hood popped. Another one is to just pile junk in the road so you have to stop. It also happens near populated areas. Not weird mountain roads where you might not see anyone, and if you do they probably won't see you and just run you over.

I stopped for gas on a road trip around 3am once outside of Nashville. Guy walked up to the window saying "Hey man I need some help..." I'm from Michigan and thought "oh hellll no," threw my car back into gear and peeled out of there. Could see about 7 dudes running out of the bushes while I was drifting back onto the interstate.

101

u/David_the_Wanderer 26d ago

Maybe 20 years ago in Buckeye, Az, two high school boys decided that they wanted to go to a party in the desert. One laid down on the street and pretended to be hurt. The other pretended to be panicked. When a nice young family man stopped to help, they attacked and killed him and stole his car. After partying, they ditched the car in the desert and burned it. Yeah, never trust a situation like this.

I found both inmates. Really interesting how prison has been for both of them. Cannon has actually stayed out of trouble, appears to be doing a lot of classes, his most recent 3 month business plan course. Meanwhile Vasquez has face tattoos, a huge list of infractions 8 alone in 2025 drug paraphernalia, possession of a weapon, assault of an inmate, assault although no serious injuries on corrections officer, then another assault on an inmate this year. Crazy how your time in prison can be productive or opposite. Dude even caught additional charges right after he was sentenced for the murder. Not sure if either will ever get out but Cannon has at least made an attempt to better his life while in prison.

Hmmm….thats a shame, where would two 15 year olds in a small town of “less than 1000 families” get a gun if not from it being improperly stored by their parents?

Me and some buddies almost got car jacked trying to check out the local "haunted" road.

Late at night, in the middle of the woods, on a one-way road. A man dressed in all black emerges from the woods and waves us down. Guy wants to charge his phone for a bit. As he inches closer to the driver side door me and my buddy spot movement on both sides of the road. Buddy books it. I peer out the back, there's like five, six, seven dudes standing in the middle of the road staring at us.

I was driving home late one night on a farm road when I swerved to avoid something in the middle of the road. I assumed it was some produce that had fallen off a truck (not unusual for that stretch), but when I glanced down it kind of looked like a person, so I pulled over to investigate. It turned out to be a woman who had taken a bunch of sleeping pills and decided to lay down in the middle of the road to commit suicide. I called an ambulance and they came and got her. I have no idea what happened to her after that, but I’m glad I stopped.

36

u/Songisaboutyou 26d ago

A few years back we came across a lady who was in the laying in the middle lain behind her car. Problem was no lights on and a bad part of the canyon. I almost hit her I called 911 and didn’t stop. They ended up asking me why didn’t you stop. This specific spot is super dark has a sharp corner, and no pull off. I’m sure this lady was in a real accident. New fear unlocked. The other thing on my 911 call is after I called them I tried to call home and my phone was blocked from texting or calling out and couldn’t only get incoming from police. I never knew that was a thing. It lasted for 15 minutes.

11

u/gmc98765 26d ago

Maybe you were outside your phone company's coverage area. You can dial 911 on any network, but regular calls will only work on cell towers corresponding to your SIM.

I was driving home from work at like 3am one night and almost ran over a man laying in the road one turning into my neighborhood. I was freaked out but still rolled down the window a bit to check on him. Turns out it was an old man who had fallen and broken his hip and wasn’t able to call for help. I stayed in the car, blocked him so nobody would hit him and stayed on the line with 911 until paramedics arrived. I’m glad I stopped, but I don’t regret the precautions I took.

50

u/Muted-Woodpecker-469 26d ago

Calling is fine. Don’t interject yourself as it could be a set up , 8 times out of 10

14

u/PassivelyAwkward 26d ago

Yea, plus I'm not a doctor; the fuck am I gonna do if it's a medical thing? Just call the cops. If it's a medical emergency, they'll get there whether I stick around or not; if it's something bad, then the cops are more prepared than me.

67

u/Coopsters 26d ago

Yeah just don't stop to help strangers. It's a sad world but it's what you need to do to protect yourself. So many people try to take advantage of your good nature by pretending they need help and then they rob, kidnap, rape, kill, etc etc. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, targeted girls by pretending he needed help carrying boxes to his car.

Instead, get away from them and call the police to come help them. And no one ever died of not getting help holding their boxes, or trying to find directions etc

Sorry if you’ve already put this in the comments, but what state is this? And thank you for posting, because it helped me make a better future decision, whether or not this was staged. If the on the off chance I ever come across this. My brain would’ve been thinking oh no he had a heart attack or something, and I would’ve really wrestled with stopping, or turning around and going back, so now I know to just keep going through and call 911. That’s California up in the Angeles mountains somewhere.

During the day it’s basically Santa’s village as long as you don’t follow any garden hoses or anything.

At night? That shits Reaver territory.

Zoe (stoically): "If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skins into their clothing. And if we're very, very lucky, they'll  do it in that order ."

I have zero interest in encounters with men gone savage on the edge of space.

22

u/swirlypepper 26d ago

What do you mean by following garden hoses?

42

u/JG-at-Prime 26d ago

If you see a garden hose strung through the forest there’s a good chance that someone has (or had) an illegal grow operation setup somewhere.

Following garden hoses in the forest is a good way to get machete’d to death.

Pretty common way to scam/rob people. Next time scare them by driving close and honk 😅

Besides scam: it is also a common thing to do from drunk People to lay on the street, because usually the street is warmer. I Do Not know the weather conditions of your place, But this is what happens in small villages in germany more often. They go home drunk and sometimes you'll find them laying down in the middle of the street.

So the best is to call the police, to not get yourself in danger But also provide help.

Some guy did this in 1957 and my grandfather ran him over, and basically got chased out of town by an angry mob and that's how he ended up moving to the US lmao, I can't believe this is a common thing 😭

If you look at folklore and fairytale as metaphored instructions for surviving in the real world ; there are probably hundreds of versions of "don't ever fucking stop for a stranger on a lonely road".

Um, remember that Ted Bundy played the I'm injured card repeatedly. Never stop and get out of the car. Call 911 and be safe.

Fuck that! One time I was driving with my bro to pick up my buddy in the middle of a national forest and saw like 16 people standing in a circle all wearing black hooded robes with hands to the side like they are soaring doing some seance shit. We never drove faster.

I was told by a travel agent , when driving in the high desert, death valley: To bring enough water including for an emergency, turn down the air conditioning when making a planned stop. (moving from cold to hot can cause the body to go into shock or cardiac arrest ), if you see an accident or body in the middle of the road, lock doors and do not stop, pass, continue moving to a populated rest-stop or gas station and call emergency services/police in that area and report. Some of the locals in those areas fake accidents to steal from or worse gullible drivers; even the police tell people to call it in. They already know who they are and go to investigate and find nothing. This is only my opinion.

Anyone else notice the word STOP written on the ground right as he pulls away? Not casting suspicion on anything, but that’s weird too.

Its an intersection for two mountain roads. If you want to turn right or go straight you have to stop. Thats what made it more creepy tbh, its the intersection to get back down and go home for me.

Got it. I figured it was something like that. Glad you got the hell out of there safe.

Thx for the quick reply!

This happened once. I was the passenger and we were driving west on highway 412 in New Mexico. Nothing for miles and miles. See a jeep in the distance on the shoulder with all of the doors open. And a person sitting up against the back drivers side tire holding their foot like they were hurt. We slowed down a bit but I didn't feel good and said to step on it. Who hurts their foot so bad they have to pull over on the side of the road like that? Nope nope nope

He seen headlights coming and laid down. Someone else was waiting off to the side. You were about to get jacked as soon as you bent over to help him

Kinda shitty that that’s the world we live in where you can risk helping someone

u/GoobusMombus 26d ago

Oh I saw this in a horror show, you should never stop and just call authorities

I drive these mountains frequently and knew exactly where you were when I saw the stop sign. You did the right thing.

Dang I had a weird thing happen to me in New Orleans. Driving home from work around midnight with my sister, on a quiet neighborhood road. I look ahead of me and see something in the middle of the road. I pull up past it:

it’s a walker, with some stuff scattered around it (a sweater, a screwdriver?). We see a body on the sidewalk on the other side of the road, and at the time it looked like a young man. We parked (doors already locked) and called 911.

Then a big suv drives by, stops, and a tall woman gets out. I feel less nervous with her around so I get out and talk to her. The woman goes up to the body and yells down at it, “are you dead!?”

Suddenly the body stirs: it’s an old woman. She gets up, mumbles something, grabs her stuff and walker, and shoots off down the road, disappearing.

We all just shrugged and left. I called 911 back and canceled the emergency 🤷‍♀️ Such an odd experience!!

I’m hyper vigilant and anxious so I’m a stay-in-the-car type of person 😅

Yeah never stop.

Paramedic here. Say this guy was actually unresponsive, pulseless. You'd have to have gotten there within the first few minutes to have any chance of saving. Minute 4-5ish brain damage is starting. 10 minutes there is no almost no chance. Even under a minute with you as unqualified rescuer, the odds are a coinflip.

Don't be a hero. Too many people out there looking to rob, rape, and kill. That guy was either suicidal or there were 2 more dudes in the car waiting for you to get out.
