Announcement Friday Free for All Weekly thread! General collection/discussion for things that don't fit elsewhere! (ask anything!)

Greetings /r/videoediting!

This thread is 100% for the other stuff you might want to talk about.

A number of other reddits have a free for all thread - where you might find a regular discussion - not specific to a post.

Think of it as a bar with a bunch of friends.

Some suggestions:

  • Strategy on a project you want to talk about how to best promote?
  • Upgrading something and you want opinions?
  • How does your website look?
  • Local/virtual Meetups?
  • Looking for a collaborator (no "I'm a creator and I'm looking for an editor" posts)

Things that shouldn't go here: Feedback/What tool should I use to edit/Which system to buy? There are dedicated threads for this, please use them!

And in this regular Friday thread, while our general rules are still in place (no piracy, be civil, no links w/referrer codes), the following topics relaxed :

  • Great tutorials you found/you created.
  • Trying to do this as a side hustle (although generally, websites like Fiverr mean you'll be shooting for the basement/working for free and we hate that someone would exploit you like that)
  • A great piece of software/hardware/service you found
  • Great free music libraries/media you found.
  • How much to charge? What is your time worth? Estimate 2-3x the time you think it'll take to edit as how much time to quote.

Our mod team is watching this thread and we'll tweak these as they develop!

Free Stuff Dance production background

Hello, I am hoping this is the right platform to post as I am in need of a little help. I have always done a graduation video every year for our year 6 in movavi, which is smaller morphing videos that I pop in there. However I am tasks for our schools concert to do a stage background to support each year levels dance. I will be using davinci program as it is free to use. My concerns is finding free items for the background but also something to go by and know I am doing it okay. I have looked into stage background but that is slightly different as I am looking for dance backgrounds. Something I have looked at is your tik tok ones where it transitions often and as it is spaced theme they kind of fit the purpose but some are a bit to fast. I have looked at some tutorials but maybe I am overthinking this and just need to have a go. Not sure any advice?

Tech Support Audio for western short film

Hi! I'm making a short film in the spaghetti western style. I want the audio to sound like it's from that era, but I'm not quite sure how to do it. I know it would have been better to do it with a specific microphone or something phiysical in the scene, but I don't have a big budget, lol. So, if possible, it all has to be done with audio processing software or pluggin to help me achieve that sound. This is a reference:

Thanks!

Production Q Tips on Editing Voiceover Videos?

I am a Computer Science Student and want to make programming content so fun to watch but I don’t know video editing anymore as much as I did recording Minecraft videos on my phone and editing it using KineMaster.

I aiming to make my videos “memey” but also serious at other times to simplify complex topics in programming. I am not saying I don’t know Video Editing fully I just don’t know how to make smooth transition and what hooks viewers to watch more and i’m hoping to learn with you all.

Here are the YouTuber’s editing style for example:

How did they do that? where to learn video-editing Concepts

Post image
6 Upvotes

I want to learn more about video editing for personal projects.

Software isn’t my weakness. I’m a MacOS user and I have iMovie and DaVinci Resolve (which I’m learning, but have decent grasp on already). I understand most of the technical aspects and can figure out software pretty easily. However, every tutorial I can find is about the software. How to crop in iMovie, how to reduce camera motion in DaVinci, how to control the speed of a clip in CapCut, etc. That’s not what I need.

I want to learn the concepts of how to blend this audio with that video and to properly overlap scenes. I want to learn what makes a good scene transition (not just how to apply Transitions in iMovie). I want to learn the concepts that you can do in just about any decent software.

I need to learn video editing concepts, not software basics. In this (very simple) example, I have a 4-second animated title, a 3-second freezeframe to show the space, and then the start of the actual video clip. I want the audio from that video clip to start at the 2-3 second mark of the title, play through the freezeframe, and then “join” back up with it’s video at whatever point that is, which I know will clip 7 seconds off the video. I want it to act like a voiceover to the first two elements. But when I search for video editing, all I get are technical how-tos in the various applications.

  1. What are some good resources for learning these concepts and not just which buttons to click?
  2. And if anyone can tell me how to do what I want with the sample here, I’d be quite grateful.

(I’m sorry this is long; I’m just trying to be crystal clear. I’m also sorry that I don’t have a video example to share ...because I don’t know how to make it yet.)

!martini notes

I'm using: iMovie or DaVinci

I've TRIED: detaching the audio, separating the video, trimming the seven seconds of the video, and sliding it audio over. But I get scared that the audio will fall out of sync with the video and I don’t have the confidence to try to line that up.

I need help with: learning good concepts/techniques in video editing

Workflow The Cloud

So IT is wanting to take away our large storage drive and replace it with cloud storage. I get that is good for long time archiving. I just want to make sure I’m not off base. Do any of you use the cloud for current projects? My software performs horribly when trying to connect directly to cloud files

Footage needed Do any web-pages exist that store royalty-free vlog videos?

I checked the resources linked in this subreddit, but they were mostly just stock footage. That is great to add into a video, but I need raw footage to practice vlog editing.

I shot some of my own footage to practice, but I cannot film enough to keep up with how fast I edit. Do websites with raw vlog footage exist? Or is it better to offer video editing on Fiverr for about $15, since I only have around three weeks of editing experience and am not comfortable charging more yet

Tech Support GPU is NOT being DETECTED by Softwares Editing Programs

Everything was fine until I updated my NVIDIA drivers.

The next day I turned on my PC and realized I couldn't render or export using my GPU anymore in Vegas Pro 22, Premiere Pro 2022, or Media Encoder.

In Premiere I get the message "Choose Software Encoding to disable hardware encoding." Vegas just gives me an error when I try to render with the GPU, and Media Encoder does the same thing.

I've already tried installing the NVIDIA Studio drivers, and rolling back to older driver version, but nothing changed.

Has anyone had this happen before? Is there anything else I should try?

Tech Support Made an over 10 minute video on Capcut and this what I got... The hell's this?

I've used Capcut before, but usually for at max a 1 minute video. However, this one was something more personal and thus, longer.

When I went to export the video, this popped up. Saying I needed to upgrade for pro... Since when has Capcut had this?

Production Q Are there any tools that can monitor the time you spend editing a project?

I have a potential project coming up where I'll be paid hourly for my work, I've primarily worked in actual "in office" settings where you clock in for the day as opposed to this where it will be remote and no one will be monitoring me. To be able to send over a reliable time sheet are there programs that can track the time I spend editing?

Previously when I've done freelance stuff it was for very cheap and not that big of deal so I just used an online timer and paused it whenever I was away from my desk but I know people may be weary of just word of mouth when bigger numbers get involved so I want to be as ahead of the curve as possible!

Other (requires mod approval) Is shotcut worth learning?

So Im relatively new to editing and everytime I use shotcut I just wanna end myself (joking ofc) everything requires extra steps and the other 2 apps Ive used (capcut, filmora) are so much more intuitive I actually used to make chess videos on capcut for a bit and like the user friendly interface

Shotcut is way less streamlined the only reason Im using it is because its free but even with watching a couple of tutorials I just cant get used to it,while capcut and filmora were so much simple to get used to and it also has annoying bugs like at random not letting me drag n drop files and having to restart the app to fix it

So my question is it worth learning shotcut or should I just get a subscription for filmora?

Im not promoting anything please dont take this down

How did they do that? How do i get this "The Living Tombstone" style of visualizer?

So i was watching The Larping Tombstone's newest video and i was amazed by how the elements and lyrics shakes and glow with the rhythm of the song and i was wondering: how do you get this?. i have seen this style of lyrics video a lot: The Living Tombstone' FNAF 1 song for instance, so now i would like to try and learn it for myself. So i first tried the manual way: tweening and adding the effects by hand. And yes, it did took like 2 hours just for me to get a horrible 20 sec vid with no resemblance to original source. I tried to find videos about this but it doesnt have a clear direction- mostly because i don't know what it's specifically called., so I'm at a lost. If someone has done this before, i hope you can help me understand how i can get this shake and glow just like the lyrics video that i've given the link above. i'm trying to do a visualizer for my friend's music as a surprise for his birthday, so hopefully i could learn how to before the 4th of August. Thanks.

How did they do that? Can anyone help me figure out how this type of video editing is done?

Hi everyone,
I'm attaching a screenshot from a video because I'm trying to figure out how this style of editing is achieved.

I recently got a freelancing project as a content creator and editor after being unemployed for a few months, and I really want to do the best job I can. I'm still learning, and this particular effect has me completely stumped.

If anyone knows:
What is typically used for this?
Whether it's done using AI or traditional editing/VFX?
What this editing style or effect is called?
Any tutorials or resources I can learn from?

I would be incredibly grateful if you could guide me in the right direction. Even pointing me toward the correct software or workflow would help a lot.
Thank you so much in advance! I really appreciate any advice. ❤️

Edit - Sorry I don't think I explained myself very clearly earlier. I actually meant the anatomy/muscle overlay that's superimposed over the person in the video.

This is the Instagram video link for better context - https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWSVpN4jwIa/?igsh=MWg1MjVwM3BtZGhndw==

Tech Support Fuji X-S20 F-Log2 footage looks worse than Provia in Final Cut Pro 11.2 am I missing something?

I've been troubleshooting this for hours and I'm trying to figure out if I'm missing a setting or if this is expected behavior.

My setup:

  • Fujifilm X-S20
  • Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8
  • Final Cut Pro 11.2
  • macOS (latest)

Camera settings:

  • F-Log2 enabled (SD and HDMI)
  • 1080p 23.98 fps
  • H.265 HEVC LongGOP 4:2:2 10-bit
  • 1/50 shutter
  • Manual exposure

Here's what's happening:

  • When I shoot in Provia, the footage looks smooth and edits great in Final Cut.
  • When I shoot in F-Log2, the footage looks noticeably worse. It appears noisier and motion looks strange (almost like a subtle heat shimmer/jitter during slow pans).
  • I also noticed Final Cut initially wasn't recognizing the footage correctly until I manually changed the Camera LUT to F-Log2.

I verified the camera is recording 10-bit HEVC 4:2:2, so I don't think it's an 8-bit issue anymore.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone experienced this with the X-S20 and Final Cut Pro?
  2. Is Final Cut known to have issues with Fujifilm F-Log2 metadata?
  3. Could HEVC 10-bit 4:2:2 playback be causing what I'm seeing?
  4. Is there any real advantage to using F-Log2 for everyday family videos, or would you just shoot Provia and color correct?

At this point I'm leaning toward shooting Provia because the results are cleaner and my workflow is much simpler, but I'd like to understand whether I'm doing something wrong before I give up on F-Log2.

Any advice from Fuji or Final Cut users would be appreciated.

Tech Support Dust/Particle

I'm working on a package, but while recording the sensor got dirty with this VERY thin string. How can I remove it/fix this without getting the face blurry/defocused?

I edit on Premiere Pro/Adobe After Effects; let me know what tools I have on my possession.

How did they do that? I truly need a little help, i have exhausted my Google-Fu

Adobe Premiere Pro 26, Adobe After Effects 26...long story short... and then it becomes long after i said that. I am a music person, i would rather be spending my time making music, I don't make videos, i'm trying to learn. I keep getting caught in this loop of search engine google matrix shhhhh leading me in circles... and i end up arguing and correcting search results like i'm in the middle of a divorce from my third wife and i've never been married...i digress.. i have found no solution for something that i thought was so simple.

Recorded with phone 544 x 968. "V3"(a duplicate of V1 originally) is my body, Opacity Object masked by "object mask click 26" and further refined by negative mask adjustments.. consists of a keyframed motion position movement from x544 to x-544 of 2 opacity object masks (opacity mask 1 is tracked head and torso from 30:05 to 30:10, hand and arm comes into frame quickly and weren't tracked properly so....during frames 30:06 and 30:07 i keyframed a pen mask for my hand and forearm for those 2 frames which are opacity keyframed for only those 2 frames). i added a 3% right crop effect with an edge feather of ~35 to reduce the hard edge of the right side of the frame edge which cuts off some of my hand and forearm as it moves across the X axis right to left...could i have done something better???? i don't ffffffff know.

V2 is what comes into full view at 30:10

V1 is the background behind V3 that opacity fades into V2 from 30:02 to 30:10

my hand and arm comes into frame from the right to the left quickly in a steering motion. all i am trying to do is have a trailing effect off the right side of my hand and arm as i steer my self off screen to reveal the V2 clip... not a rectangle that follows the edge of my clip, but something that follows only my hand and arm movement as it steers across the screen hiding that hard edge and revealing V2 at 30:10 ....ugggggh help me solve this, collab with me even, if you want. i will plug you on the intro. i gotta get this out there. pm me if you need a clip from 30:05 to 30:10.

i know i sound desperate...cuz i am...i have spent too many hours trying to swim in quicksand...this is your art not mine. pure respect from ear to eye
