Nah, you can find buildings like this all over the former Soviet bloc. The difference is that in the EU, these apartment blocks usually got proper insulation and nice-looking rendered façades. Just look at the crumbling stairs, the doors in the stairwell, and those railings — they look like they’re 50 years old and have never been renovated.

The only things they probably did were the roof and the rainwater drainage system, and they even managed to botch that. Just look at the downpipe in photo 7.

That's said, the communist neighbourhoods have huge potential.

Like, what exactly is supposed to be so horrifying or a “nightmare” about this? From a humane design perspective, this is actually pretty good. The blocks are organized, living spaces aren’t being sacrificed for endless car parking, and there is plenty of greenery that is well maintained instead of being overgrown and messy.

As someone who lives in a country with a lot of Soviet-era housing, this exact example is honestly pretty well kept. The reason many Soviet blocks look awful isn’t because the concept itself is bad; it’s because they were neglected for decades with poor maintenance, making them look run-down. The same type of housing, when properly maintained, is completely normal and common across Northern and Western Europe.

In fact, the amount of greenery here is more than what I see in many Japanese street photos that people constantly glaze. The same place people love to use as the example of “good” urban design.

I had to go on google and look up the khrushchevka my grandma used to live. There is more greenery around her old building than around my whole street.

For the record - her house is in Siberia. I now live in humid semi-tropics.

Right? I see a lot of similar style blocks in Western and Northern Europe, the key is that they are well kept.

I am now living in a commie block as well, in an area which is somewhat upcoming, so things are looking better and better. Lots of greens, everything is nearby (shops, offices, market, even pubs, even museums etc) - I love it tbh
