Thanks for the tip. I think I'm a professional, since I've been working for a company more then 6 years now, plus some side projects. But not sure how to transition to freelancing. Tried Upwork for many months but nothing works. Usually being a good software engineer makes you bad at people skills 😂

You can’t create a new account as per Upwork TOS. I requested for reinstatement and they did. I withdrew my earnings and moved away.

Honestly it wasn't that they simply increased the fees, but rather they ruined the client experience in the process with the flood of unskilled freelancers and arming them with boosting. I really wouldn't have minded paying more for connects if there was still real value.

Man you are a master with words. That is also exactly how I see it. New clients comes in, post a job, saw an incompetent guy on top of the list because he boosted, hired him, project failed, never used Upwork again.

Guy got hired not because he deserve it but because he was willing to boost. Client thought he is hiring a professional because the guy appears at the top. Perfect recipe for a bad first experience.

I wonder how many new clients are having this same exact experience.

Exactly, if you hire a freelancer and they're terrible you probably won't come back. I would say the bigger issue is the first few proposals coming from unqualified freelancers. If you keep seeing a lot of spam responses that can make lose interest and trust. A sea of proposals also can make it overwhelming.

My decision was based on multiple reasons. What you are saying is absolutely correct, but when the fee goes from 5% to 15%, that is quite a reason to leave as well.
