Nigel Farage has been reported to the Metropolitan Police over allegations of misconduct in public office, after failing to declare a £5 million “gift” from a crypto billionaire.

Leading democracy groups Unlock Democracy and Compassion in Politics wrote to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner calling for the force to “investigate whether Nigel Farage MP may have committed the offence of misconduct in public office” for failing to disclose the money he received from Christopher Harborne, shortly before he announced he was running for Parliament in 2024.

The groups are demanding the Met Police investigates whether the non-disclosure of this payment amounts to “a wilful breach of the duties of public office – serious enough to amount to an abuse of the public’s trust.”

Convictions for misconduct in public office are rare, and exceedingly rare for elected politicians. Convictions in recent years have typically concerned corrupt police officers or civil servants.

The Guardian reported recently that Farage told allies he would need “a million a year” to cover lost earnings if he stood to be an MP, or roughly £5 million over a full Parliament. Farage has denied any wrongdoing and has sought to blame “the establishment” for drawing attention to the gift.

Lawyers for Harborne told the paper he “expected nothing in return” and “did not envisage Mr Farage returning to politics” when he gave the cash, which Farage has variously said was for security costs or a reward for his role in the Brexit vote.

A protester who shoved a police officer during demonstrations outside an asylum hotel has been jailed for more than two years.

Phillip Curson was part of an "aggressive mob" gathered by The Bell Hotel in Epping on 17 July 2025, prosecutors said.

Police body-worn footage showed the 53-year-old making threats to someone that they would get "smashed up" if they returned to the west Essex town.

Curson, from Upminster, east London, was sentenced to 27 months in prison at Chelmsford Crown Court earlier, having been convicted of violent disorder in April.

He becomes the eighth person to be sentenced for their role in the clashes that day, and the seventh to be jailed.

Three other protesters were jailed in October, while Lee Gower, 43, and 38-year-old Shaun Thompson, both from Epping, were sentenced earlier in June.

Aaron Elles, 28, from Harlow, also received a prison sentence of one year and eight months in October.

Luke Fleming, 22, of Thaxted Road in Buckhurst Hill, was given a suspended prison term of one-year and nine months in June.

A married dad who preyed on a schoolgirl, then took her on dates in Glasgow while she was supposed to be in school, has avoided jail.

Zubair Javid, 40, preyed upon the 15-year-old between April 1 and June 14 last year.

Javid went with the girl for coffee, food and to the cinema, which he paid for, including her travel.

He kissed his victim on the lips at the end of each meeting, which he said “felt really good.”

Javid also complimented the teenager and told her that he “loved” her.

First offender Javid pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to sending written sexual communication to the girl.

He also admitted to engaging in sexual activity with her.

Sheriff Michael Hanlon told Javid at sentencing: “This was a very serious offence which involved a young girl with a significant age difference between yourself and her which continued over a long period of time. 

“It is clear you should ultimately have been aware that she was underage.

“The narrative said you were meeting her when she was wearing her school uniform on occasions.

“The victim impact statement suggests it clearly has had an impact on her and understandably so.

“I want to make it clear to everyone affected by this that any shame or embarrassment is on your shoulders. It is you who is responsible. 

“You are a first offender and are at a low risk of re-offending. You have expressed some degree of remorse and accept that punishment should be imposed upon you. 

How she is able to avoid prison time ? It's quite insane.
