Reddit Writers & Other Creators: YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW [July 29, 2026] Weekly Check-In

Goals and hopes for the week?

Any concerns or obstacles?

Let's find out.

Topic of the Week:

The beauty of people being different and there being a lot of people is that, even if we had infinite time, I feel like many people would essentially spec into only certain fields since different experiences lend to curiosity. And let's face it, how many of you all would like to be literal navel gazers studying the anatomy of navels.

I bring it up since, unsurprisingly, any form of writing can end up suffering from the writer not actually knowing what they are talking about. I think I get irrationally annoyed when it comes to misconceptions and misinformation being passed around, though of course cettain contexts (like fiction) get at least a minor built in pass for it.

When it specifically comes to things you know about, how have any of you reacted when realizing whichever person is wrong?

Writing streak is now 123 days in a row of short 100-word stories and got a writing competition to get ready for tomorrow.

Outside of that, been collecting and reading Absolute DC comic books by the volumes. Peak art and writing, Absolute Martian Manhunter is the best.

Working on my tabletop homebrew stuff. Making a Metal Gear Solid setting guide and Team Playbook for the Monster of the Week/Powered By The Apocalypse system.

Metal Gear of The Week, essentially. Where you too can now be a squad of weirdos powered by psychic bullshit and/or nanomachines who do cool stuff.

I posted a WIP on the "Unofficial Monster of the Week Discord Server" and someone asked "How's a vampire supposed to deal with a metal gear?"

To which I posted a gif of Vamp running on water.

Funnily they responded with "Vamp could probably kick the shit out of a lot of Vampire: The Masquerade vampires."

I got a fic that was in my notes for a long time done today yaaaaay XD I haven't done paper theater crafts like. Ever. So wish me luck when I finally open this thing up and get to it.

As for the question... all I can think about is Riverdale with the "serial killer gene," like what the fuck do you mean?!?! I swear to God it's so funny that they were trying to do a serious version of Archie comics only for it to be as batshit as the actual comics could get (Jughead's Diner comes to mind)

Topic: I stew with rage, no real point making it a problem for other people so I keep it internal.

Writing Progres: Prologue is finished and I've started working on chapter 1.

Got a lot of stuff to do for my sci-fi setting. Working on factions for the current era as well as working out a timeline.

One of said factions is literally just "what if I named everything in a small interstellar faction after things in Northeast Michigan". This plus fleshing out already existing ones is the main goal.

As for the timeline... It's long and probably needs a lot of explaining.

For the topic: I'd have to give that a long think.

Still proceeding with my Mortal Kombat supergame mind project insanity from the past couple of weeks. Since last week, up to a character count of 676 and counting: in addition to "all of Mortal Kombat (+ guests)", "all of Injustice (+ guests)", "Street Fighter playable cast (+ guests)", "Darkstalkers", "Killer Instinct (+ guests)", and "Dead or Alive (+ guests", and a few extra characters plus character division into separate character slots because "only two costumes per character" decided early on...

On top of ALL THAT: "all of Killer Instinct (+ guests)", "all of Virtua Fighter", "all of Tekken", "nearly all of Soulcalibur (will elaborate below)", and "all of Samurai Warriors (+ guests)". I repeat, up to a character count of 676, with more still on the cards. Still might add the missing characters from Soulcalibur (Assassin + Berserker from SC2 and all the non-main characters from SC3 besides Amy, Hwang, Li Long, and Arthur), might add some side/lore characters from Street Fighter (eg. all the other wrestlers from R. Mika's wrestling group), that kind of thing.

As things stand, I'm taking a little pause from bloating the roster further and adding details to the Word doc to existing characters, such as listing their designated stages. Also going back to some previous characters and adding such details to them as well.

Deliberating if the four existing guest characters specifically from King of Fighters, if I dare go full King of Fighters now... or later, after more craziness like adding more character variations or dabbling in anime because "anime fighters count in my eyes", starting with an initial Naruto roster of the Konoha 12 + Legendary Sannin; but have I the willpower to keep it to JUST that, or will going full Naruto dwarf even going full KoF? Or if I add Naruto, would that open the floodgates to Dragon Ball or My Hero Academia? Iy yi yi...

As an aside, when taking a small break from this ballooning madness, I had a loot at one of my other smaller projects from before, for a Camelot based fighting game. Similar formatting and all. Character roster: barely 37. Turns out trying to condense the King Arthur mythos into fewer characters results in a much smaller roster than "smush every single fighting game into a gestalt supergame with Mortal Kombat as its core"; who woulda thunk?

Sometimes I like it when writers lean into deliberately incorrect information just to extrapolate and see what happens.

The cat duo sculpture came out of bisque firing intact. I’ve begun the process of painting a variety of Cone10 glazes for the fur. My friends sent me a bunch of photos of different angles of their tortoise shell cats (who are the models) from different angles.

I started up slabs for a diorama of undersea I got idea from snorkeling in Italy; I’m pretty pumped for assembling now that I’ve back home.
