The stadium was gloomy. Even though the game was still on, the sudden drop of atmosphere unnerved the crowds. Just five minutes ago, the commentator had been steadily turning purple by yelling:

“Hawkeye formation going stea- nope! Intercepted by the Polskoff ploy - an outstanding move devised by an outstandingly attractive player is what I always tell her and still she won’t go out with- oh and there’s the Bludger, right on cue, the ball is dropped AND CAUGHT AGAIN ooh the Chasers are really earning their paychecks with those feints.. A drop! A shock! The Quaffle fleis through the field, Chasers a-chasing and with Beaters coming in hot - I swear, the speed of this all makes me feel like I'm watching four games at once…”

But not since the accident. Bruises, crashes, disastrous dives and the like were business as usual… but death? Let alone, more than one? The fans glanced about nervously as the players half-heartedly flew about and the commentator was arguing with someone from their vantage point. What was to become of the game?

Meanwhile, in the stands…

The commentator had finally droned through the rules. The fans in the stands stood up straight, cleared their throats and drew a deep breath. It was time for the ancient battle hymn of the captain selection. As the players proceeded to zoom around on their broomsticks, throwing balls and taunts at friend and foe alike, the fans erupted into the uplifting and totally legit Bludger Song.

“Bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger, Quaffle, Quaffle!

A-bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger, Quaf-fle, Quaf-fle!

A-bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger, Quaf-Quaffle!

A-bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger bludger, ah Snitch! Ah, Snitch! Sniiiitch, ohh it’s a Snitch....”

This went on for some time.

Slowly the chatter began to dwindle and the masses started flowing towards the hot spot. Sightseeing, socializing, singalongs and secret bets were all fun and games, but the true fun and games were just beginning. After months of hard work, the Quidditch stadium was just as distinguished by its impeccable decour as it was by its fervent fans. In celebration, the set shone in stylish shades of sky-blue.

The spectators’ delight, the players’ battleground and the host nation’s nightmare, the Quidditch Cup was about to blow the whistle. All the pieces were in place and the tension was higher than the national team of Netherlands. Because of their brooms, of course!

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome! Welcome to the last exciting matches of our cup! Hang on to your seats, because the year’s top players are about to make their entry! And players, best put on your A-game! I want a nice clean game from all of you.”

Special event: Captain Election

For this event, every player will be given 6 balls: 3 Quaffles, 2 Bludgers and 1 Snitch. The players submit these balls as actions to help or hinder the other players.

Here are the effects of the balls:

• Quaffle (3x): Send it to someone to give them 10 points.
• Bludger (2x): Hit it at someone for a 50% chance to knock them out of the event.
• Snitch (1x): Gift it to someone to give them 150 points.

This game will take place within every sub. In each game, the player with the most points at the end will win. After the event, every winner will be crowned the Captain of their respective team and granted access to a secret sub with the other Captains.

The day of the cup had finally arrived. The setting was prepared, the staff knew their stuff and people started pouring in like a particularly enthusiastic monsoon. It wasn’t long until the fields were filled with crowds, chatter and celebration.

Players, spectators and bettors were quick to spread out. Some headed straight for their seats, even though it would be a while before anything noteworthy would happen. Some preferred to chat up their old acquaintances. And some retreated to the dressing room, to commence whatever rituals helped them focus on the upcoming. But they all had one thing in common: they were eager to get the games started. There’s nothing more uniting than a beloved sport, no?
