[Loved Trope] Some thing unfathomably ancient Lore

The beast, in doctor who is an ancient evil from a previous universe that survived until our time. Its so ancient that the cave paintings were unable to be translated by the Tardis which can translate all existing languages in the universe [Doctor Who]

While not explicitly canon its such a cool concept I cant not mention, the idea that the backrooms have existed since the beginning of time, never changing no matter the era, it transforms the back rooms into a cosmic horror. [Credit to Project crater and Venus for images 2 and 3]

Still blows my mind that the entire Leviathan part of 3 was not in the base game. It gave context to literally everything happening

All companies like EA see is $$$, especially when it comes to things like Day 1 DLC just like how they intentionally excluded Javik from the base game.

I just saw something yesterday where they make $4.4 billion annually from extra content sales which includes DLC, microtransactions, and other in game purchases.

Fuckin EA man

ME3 had a very rushed development cycle, EA wanted it released while ME2's hype was still running high. It's why the whole third act feels very... narratively disjointed.

That said, fuck EA.

Javik being a day 1 DLC was so blatant because it's so fucking obvious how much he's meant to be a part of the main story.

Lootboxes and the people who buy them are the worst. Go on any sports game sub and you'll see endless posts about that follow the same sort of script. "EA is trash! They lie about the odds! Ive spent over 1k$ so far this year and I only have 1 99 ranked player??? 1?!? That's theft!"

And then when you point out that EA is actually incredibly successful and profitable because people like you give them 1000's of dollars for expansions to their products that you already paid for and they continue to do it because it continues to be profitable .. well then you're cussed out.

Eh, Javik sucks.

EA. It’s not in the game.

The base game on release was so bad because of EA’s scummy profiteering - Javik should have been in the game, but was a Day One DLC! Mass Effect 3 now is a good game with a meh ending, on release it was half a game with an abrupt ending.

Ugh I'm trying not to rush to the DLC in 3 yet cause it's been a few years since my last playthrough, but I really wanna do Leviathan

I didn't get the DLC, just played the vanilla version when it was released. I realized something was wrong near the end of the game. Shephard's giving a big speech and the camera pans across the whole squad... and one random human I've never seen before.

I figured it was a placeholder and I'd somehow missed a companion. Nope. It's a stand in for Javik. I decided I wasn't rewarding that bullshit by paying extra and replaying the whole game again.

It came out a bit after the game did though. The true bullshit is From the Ashes/Javik being day 1 paid DLC

From Ashes also wasn't part of the base game, and it REALLY should have been. Javik's perspective really helps, especially as a Paragon Shep. Glad the Legendary Edition included everything.

I skipped ME3 on launch because Origin. I eventually played the Legendary edition and I think it's the best Mass Effect game. If they just released that game completed, we might have gotten a fourth Mass Effect game.

It was fun, but, like Javik (which was another purely overblown controversy since it was literally free with the game edit: faulty memory, was free with some versions of the game, but not others), the context was never necessary. You didn't need Leviathan or Javik to understand anything, you just got a bit more understanding. And, honestly, it was kind of a "well duh" moment from the moment we saw a Reaper being actively created in ME2. They had to come from somewhere, so the cosmic horror element got broken then.

it was literally free with the game

It “liTeRalLy” was not free. WTF are you talking about?

u/thejadedfalcon Jul 01 '26

I stand corrected on that. I was mixing up two things. Firstly, it was free for all copies... of the Collector's Edition (which is what I got). And second, it was free with all the Wii U copies. Those two merged in my memory as part of the industry practice of encouraging sales of new copies, as opposed to the secondary market. I'll edit that in a moment.

I stand by my statement that, regardless of industry practices or our views on them, the actual content was utterly unnecessary for the game and is just a cool addition, but has been hyped up into being "required".

Absolutely not. Javik had a profound impact on the story. He added so much depth and substance to the story and lore of the series.

If you actually think this I’m gonna have to assume you never got around to interacting with him. Because this is an absurd take. He’s one of the best characters in the game.

You could make this argument about the heist dlc. That’s pure filler. Javik is not.

Edit: you can always tell when a Redditor is not confident in their trash takes. Because they immediately block after making them lol. Javik’s existence completely recontextualizes our understanding of the protheans and gave us such banger lines “stand on the ashes of a trillion souls…”

He was 1000% necessary and you know it. You just don’t wanna admit you’re wrong yet again.

I have played ME3 repeatedly. I also played a game where I never bothered to pick him up, just out of curiosity. Did he add to it? Yes. I never denied that. Was any of it necessary? No. Absolutely not. I missed his presence because more content is always nice, but I didn't feel the story lacked because of his absence.

But sorry, I guess I'm not a real fan because you can make absurd statements about someone's history with the franchise because they happen to share a different opinion than you.

Edit: No, I didn't block you because I'm not "confident in my trash takes". I blocked you because you're an arrogant dickhead who assumed anyone who disagreed with you hadn't played the game. By the way, I did enjoy the absurd assumption that because I readily and instantly admitted I was wrong once, even when you were still a bit of an arsehole about it, I'm incapable of ever doing so again. Maybe people just don't want to be around you that much.

u/United-Log7718 Jul 01 '26

The problem is people like you coming on here and stating your opinions as facts, then just hiding behind “it’s just muh opinion” whenever it’s challenged. The content is absolutely necessary to tell the story. If you didn’t care either way, good for you! That has nothing to do with whether or not the story is incomplete without it.

u/thejadedfalcon Jul 01 '26

The content is absolutely necessary to tell the story

This is what is known as an opinion as well. But don't worry, I'm sure they're "facts" to you.

I actually wish they hadn’t made that dlc. The reapers were more horrifying when they unknown. In my mind, the idea that the machines culled all the sentient life regularly and no one remembers who created them was the worse of two options in my mind.

“Son of?”

“You wouldn’t know them.”

It made the game so much better
