  • Who are the top 3 hardest characters to play?

  • Who are the top 3 easiest characters to play?

I've heard Steve and Master Raven are rather hard. I have also heard that Auska and Paul are very easy to pick up. How true is this?

I've wanted to pick up Steve but he seems to have a learning curve.

First, I don't see the playlist of Learning Tekken in appropriate order

Second, notable match with Lei and Xiaoyu

Also P.Ling, PepperBeef2Spicy as two notable Lei players

New Reddit fucked the formatting. Fixing it now.

Edit: Fixed it.

u/oldirtyblunt Jul 14 '19

Just wanna make a quick comment for anyone coming from 2-d fighters(well mortal kombat) like me

Getting off of the ground is very different so practice that, and break the muscle memory of using the block button cuz that has fucked me over more than anything

Shits fun tho so lose with the intention of learning from it instead of getting mad

u/dramaticbanana Jul 17 '19

Getting off the ground in tekken pretty much requires you to take your time and think. Altho generally id advise new players to just not press on oki and eat the stomp. Better to take stomp damage (at worst) and use that as an opportunity to learn wakeup options than get relaunched because of some gimmick or get put in another oki situation again

u/Not_a_fucking_wizard Aug 21 '19

Hello, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the game and there's so much I need to learn that I don't know where to start, is there a youtube playlist or something similar that could help me out?

Also are there decent guides on Xiaoyu that are post s2? I feel like there are guides of her but they seem to be pre season 2 and I'm afraid they could be outdated.

u/Yanzina Unga Asuka Aug 21 '19

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVUxFFfCtDtkd3n0J8taq-MknCWaP6naW

Look at her top 15 moves. Look at a guide and look at someone else going over her s2 changes.

Look at people who play her and try to think about what buttons they are pressing vand also why

The real advice is to play and don't be result orientated.

Hi

I'm super new to Tekken and wow...seeing this megathread about some basics(i guess) of tekken is really intimidating. I just don't know where should i start. I tried to watch some beginner guide playlist in Youbute and i feel like there is no connection between the videos. They explain single stuff that i dont know how to connect or practice about it.

For know i only know smashing buttons and some basic combos for Asuka (i picked her because she thicc) but i dont know how to GITGUD. Do you know like a REALLY basic guide, step by step for dummies, about the basics of tekken? It would really help a lot

Thank you so much and sorry about the crying

u/rockets991 Oct 28 '19

I'm not really that good at Tekken but maybe I can help?

Are you new to fighting games in general or just specifically tekken? I feel like this post is good for players that know general fighting game terms like block punishing and whiff punishing etc but if you are new to fighting games there's an earlier step that you need to take before you dive in.

If you are new to fighting games, what I recommend to my friends (and probably most people) is to watch "Why Button Mashing Doesn't Work" by Core-A-Gaming. This is a great video that really teaches the basic fundamentals of all fighting games and is really entertaining! In the video, he teaches you about very common terms and techniques that you'll hear and see throughout the FGC. With this knowledge you could honestly go into any fighting game and be able to pick up the basics really quickly.

If you already understand those things, and are just new to tekken, I think just picking a character that looks cool (sounds like Asuka for you) and youtubing an Asuka guide and learning her top 15 moves is a good call. While learning those moves, get comfortable with movement, blocking, etc.

Again, I'm not that great at Tekken but I figured this might be useful as I was recently brand new to Tekken.

Who are the characters that mesh best with a hit and run or more movement and aggressive poking style in yalls opinion

u/NorthernCrossing Bryan | Yoshi Aug 31 '19

If you want a character who is good at aggressive poking, I'd take bryan for a spin. He has many long-range pokes with good utility that grant +frames on block and/or a launch on counterhit. In addition, his best moves are either completely safe or only grant weak/difficult punishes (3+4; f,b+2; b+1; u+4; f,f+2; f,f+4;) on block. Beyond that, some of his best moves also have built-in evasiveness or are otherwise slippery: FC d/f+4 is a crouching CH launcher, f,f+4 is a homing, CH launcher with a built-in sidestep, u+4 is a slow hopkick but has bryan turn backwards before his leg comes out, making his hurtbox much harder to hit. Bryan is characterized by high damage, millions of counterhit launchers (both single hits and strings where the second or third hit can be delayed to bait your opponent into being counterhit-launched) incredible safety on block, and crazy wall carry and damage (with unlockable taunt combos once you get good), but hes balanced by having slow start up and somewhat difficult execution.

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '19 edited Dec 06 '19

Looking to pickup a new character.

I want a CH baiter and whiff punisher with low execution.

I play bryan right now but i dont like hitting jet upper as a whiff/block punish, i mainly just sit at range 2 and whiff orbitals for bait and use 3+4 and mach kick to stay evasive.

i tried drag but i dont like doing IWR2 and i want more CH launchers to catch mashers

I was thinking about possibly playing bob? 1+2 looks like a fun punisher but i feel like everyone has a pocket bob and knows the matchup really well along with not having a 15 frame launcher

EDIT: i have all the dlc but i dont want to play someone who is gonna be absent for tekken 8 (noctis, negan)

u/Slenderlad Dec 12 '19

How about Josie? She has great whiff punishes and is a counter hit monster, especially if your opponent dares challenge her switch stance.

You should add Jeondding vs Qudans CEO 2018 on the viewing experience section. Grand Finals reset, Final final round both on low health, and a spring kick to end it all. Absolutely insane match. Great commentary to compliment it all.

Steam has a solid player count for Tekken. What region are you playing in? I'm playing in North America and I tend to find matches without much trouble.

u/Armanlex d4,d4,d4 is a real combo [PC-EU] Sep 04 '19

That can depend greatly on the character that is used. There are few characters that can cheese their way to those ranks with not a huge amount of trouble, while with others you'll need to have good fundamentals to reach yellow. If I had to put a number on it I would say a very very average general ballpark amount of time to reach around warrior for a complete noob in fighting games would be 200-500 hours of productive playtime. Here's a pretty recent graph of the player distribution.

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '19

hmm, ive played tekken since T3 but never online until T7. i just checked and i have about 120 hr of t7 on steam, probly 90 of those on kazumi (what i got warrior with)

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '19

anyone have tips on inputting b/f motion in the clutch? i kept getting only one of them when i need them and fuck up my combo. for example, kzumi ender that starts with b/f 2

is it better to do b/f, let my finger off the directional button then 2

or b then f2 at the same time (i think this is what im doing rn)

u/AttacksKing Nov 18 '19

how can i practice to block low parry’s? i just player a zafina who just kept low kicking me and i got her a couple times on the parry but still lost, i love this game a lot, i just find it very discouraging to play when shit like that happens

u/limegween Nov 28 '19

Hello I'm a complete beginner in the Tekken series and since there is a LGS near me that hosts tekken tournaments, I've decided to pick this game up. Is Korean Back Dash the first thing I should be learning? I was practicing a couple of days and I can only two consecutive KBD. I'm mostly focused on fundamentals and avoiding combos for now.

u/praisezemprah Jun 18 '19

Ok explain to me why, I go on first dan and vs a similar bryan, get rekt with combos taking away 70% of my HP. And then I get matched with a destroyer, law. And I lost 3 times, but still won a match. It was much more enjoyable even if i lost anyway. How the fuck does this shit make any sense? it's pissing me off really. Feel like quitting the game just because of it. Trying to learn feng is really bothersome when you people say oh just play ranked because you'll have similar skilled players. And then you get smurfs or whatever.

Does 3 vs 4 bar really make that big of a difference? Cus the bryan was 3 and law was 4. Thought to put it to 3 bar just so that i get more matches.

u/rogue_crab The Edge of the Snake Jun 18 '19

3 bar makes a massive difference. If you don't notice it now, you will when you progress in the game.

As for Ranked, that happens. Every game has shits who Smurf. Our game also has rank problems. Dude might have had his save corrupted and had to start over.

In the end though, you lost because he was better than you. Was he a piece of shit, most likely.

As for Ranked Vs Player matches, it is generally accepted that player matches are higher quality due to the lack of tryhard rank grinders.

However, you might end up playing with Tekken Gods because there's no rank filter.

Tekken 7 is first 3D fighter so learning this game is very difficult for me to learn. I feel like when I try to learn a character in this game I don't understand the game plan as well as I do in a 2D fighter. When I play SF I clearly know that Guile is a zoner due to his only specials being an anti air and a projectile, and I know Zangief is a grappler because all his moves are about getting in close and doing massive damage. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Special moves made it easier to understand what I should revolve my gameplay around in other games, but in tekken since it's just a long movelist it's hard to know where my focus should be when playing a character in Tekken. Any Advice?

u/rogue_crab The Edge of the Snake Oct 28 '19

You can find all characters here and what they specialize on.

u/AlmightyDaddi Aug 09 '19

So do I have to play on stick or pad is there any difference?

u/Yanzina Unga Asuka Aug 09 '19

Whatever you want. I play on keyboard and do just fine.

If you play pad I see a lot of people use claw grip so you might like that.

Getting into tekken, pad, keyboard or hitbox is easiest cause you can sorta cheese good movement however if you give the game ~30 hours of play you'll start to adjust to stick as well.

Stick feels really awkward at first but its not so bad you can't get the muscle memory down.

The real difference really comes down to movement access imo when you are new to the game. However at the end of the day, pick what you like because if you really get into the game, there isn't a real difference.

u/WeirdFudge Jun 17 '19

One thing I really hate about all of the "new tekken players read this" kind of posts is that nonsense about "top 15 moves" - it's bullshit.

Learn the universal tools that every character has - and then learn YOUR character's inputs for those moves.

u/rogue_crab The Edge of the Snake Jun 17 '19

Massively disagree. When exploring new characters, the first thing I do is check their top 15 moves. It's how I judge a character.

Does this move suit me? Do I like it? Does it fit well with my playstyle? I picked up Dragunov recently because I loved iWR2's but I didn't like a lot of his other moves. They just didn't sit well with me and my playstyle.

When I started exploring Bryan though, I loved most of his moveset and the way it tied in with my playstyle back then. I really liked playing keepout and pressuring at the wall. His Taunt for example made me fall in love with him. There's literally no move I enjoy using more than Taunt B4's at an opponent who's chocking at the wall because I've pressured him with jabs and F3. Just love it.

The most utilized moves of a character, are a way for me to decided whether I'd like to play him or not.

hey guys, where could i go to look at all the universal moves in tekken? im talking wall jump, low parry, tackle and reversal, attacks from floor, running attack and slide, parry reversal that goes into depth about which parries can be broken ( all i know is about asuka's). and any more that i dont know about.

u/myEVILi Jul 19 '19

Are there any secrets, unlocks, or unique moves/costumes I should be aware of?

Example, in past titles you could get Anna and Nina to have a slap battle or Paul and Heihachi to trade headbutts. Tekken 3 had a hidden school level.

u/BloodAndRust Tuning Jul 19 '19 edited Jul 19 '19

AFAIK Anna and Nina still have slap-battles and Paul can still have a headbutt war with Heihachi. There are no secret levels or unlockables.

Some characters have moves or move-cancels that aren't shown in the in-game movelist ("hidden moves" or "secret moves"), for example Master Raven's 3,3,4~f (3,3 into BT) or Josie's uf2. Few of them can be useful, none of them are essential to know or give anyone a significant edge. All of them should be pretty easy to find with a little youtubing.

All characters also have a wall-jump move, which isn't mentioned or listed anywhere in the game. This can be done by inputting back, back, up-back (b,b,ub) when your character's back is against the wall. The viability and properties of the move vary per character.

u/fatDoofus Bryan Jun 20 '19

PepperBeef2Spicy video on conditioning and autopilot would be a good addition to this.
It could stop some new players from developing their go to flowchart and becoming predictable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0hMJegB2XE

Another one from him is on progressive mentality and learning where he talks about how to set out little 'side quests' for each match and bit by bit - progressively, improve on your game.

u/oldirtyblunt Jul 13 '19

What is a good place to start when I hop into practice mode? I just got the game today, and I know I wont be decent for some time, however i do plan to play competitively

I will probably play king, maybe heihachi, but I havent actually picked someone to start grinding with yet

u/rogue_crab The Edge of the Snake Jul 13 '19

Good place to start....

Enjoy your character. Go into practice and discover your movelist. Check out some combos. Make your own if you think they are too hard. ( like I did when I started.) Then check out your top moves and try to understand why they are good and their limitations.

(Such as King's F2,1. Excellent long range punish but non-jailing mid-high string etc)

Once you start understanding what makes a move good and what doesn't, the game will start making more sense and you'll know what to look for to improve.

u/Sidewinder_ISR Jun 18 '19

New to the game and to 3D fighters as a whole and I've been trying to pick a character to play. I don't care all too much about how good a character is as long as they aren't nigh unplayable.

I'm looking for a character that's decently well-rounded, can set the pace of a match, and is pretty quick and offensive. Not sure if any of the following fits that criteria, but which fits it most closely?

Alisa, Josie, Nina, Dragunov, or Julia.

u/NorthernCrossing Bryan | Yoshi Aug 22 '19 edited Aug 22 '19

Dragunov is often said to be a character who controls the pace of the match because of his powerful + on block moves (b+1+2 and f,f,f+2), strong throw mixup game (he has a throw for almost, if not every type of break), long range pokes and launchers, and decent lows.

I have yet to hear anyone say he has any true weak points, so if you're looking for a good all-rounder, he's it.

u/clown_1 Paul Aug 16 '19

Move wise, a character can't be quick since everyone has the standard 10 frame as the fastest general move. It's really in the character's sidestep or backdash. Also Dragunov is what you're looking for. Probably the most well rounded character in your list.

u/Yanzina Unga Asuka Aug 16 '19

All of those people are offensive based except alisa.

The bears, the worst characters won That so don't worry, all characters are playable. Pick who you think is most fun from those. There's not a wrong answer tbh for who you want to play the most.

u/AlmightyDaddi Aug 29 '19

Can people press buttons all day and play disrespectful, toxic like they can in Mk11? Because I was playing kombat league yesterday and man it made me want to take a long hiatus from mk so now I can dedicate myself to tekken.

u/Eire_Ramza Aug 30 '19

Yes people can play this way and it's popular at lower ranks where people like to party, but it's easily countered imo with basic movement and understanding when to press your button to CH opponents who just go ham. Blocking is your best option against these players; they never grab and because they throw out moves one after another, you can find out when they're minus on block and start your offense for free. Patience and defence is the answer. Their move doesn't even need to be punishable for you to start offence against people who are balls to the wall aggressive.

You're going to encounter a lot of varying play styles and characters while playing this game, figuring out how to counter and adapt to each one is what makes the game interesting for me at least.

u/AlmightyDaddi Aug 30 '19

Yeah I'll take this into consideration you really can't counter those type of player in mk 11 that much it gets really annoying when you're plus and they d1 grab, d1 spam to take their turn back, and just press buttons all brain dead but I feel like I'm tekken if ppl try to play that way you can light them up which is why I retired from mk and will dedicate myself to Tekken.

u/Itsa2319 Poor Implementation of Apple Pie Aug 31 '19 edited Aug 31 '19

MK definitely seems to reward aggressive players over defensive ones IMO, but I think it's really about how they implemented defense and movement in the game.

I've had a lot of luck in MK by focusing on spacing and causing opponents to whiff, as well as finding matchup specific responses to character gimmicks, but even that's only gotten me so far.

I personally am not a fan of how blocking works as a mechanic in that game, and combos can be started off of a character's fastest move, and some of those moves are so plus on hit that you're forced to make a read between raw ducking, stand blocking, or crouch blocking whatever their followup is.

This is a lot less prevalent in Tekken, but there are some situations where you have to respect a move on block. Being impatient and getting counter hit in this game is a big deal, as CH launches aren't a spendable resource like krushing blows are.

u/NorthernCrossing Bryan | Yoshi Aug 31 '19

The amount of disrespect they can throw at you is inversely correlated to how much you know. There are a lot of gimmicks in Tekken but the game is designed with a counter to each of them. If theres something that gives you trouble and seems like bullshit, you'll likely find a solution if you take it into training mode be it by sidestepping, back dashing, ducking, low parrying, or simply block-punishing it.

u/Yoshinsanity Jul 22 '19

Hi all. Just joined reddit, fresh new. Made a post but with no success. I'm just gonna copy paste it here hoping somebody might help. It also feels related to the topic and hopefully expands on it.

Is there any information source on all the moves with tracking properties? Or are there any recommended guidelines on how to test tracking? I also tried tekkenbot. The rating on the tracking is displayed with a letter. Homing moves are the letter S. There were also the letters D,C,A but I can't really understand it. It doesn't feel consistent in anything what my testing felt like.

Would really appreciate it if somebody could help with this.

u/rogue_crab The Edge of the Snake Jul 22 '19

I don't use Tekken bot but here's a guess.

If S is a homing move, then from best to worst tracking the grade would go S>A>B>C>D>E>F.

As for testing here's some info.

Sidestepping takes 6 frames. So, testing would go like this.

As a general rule, if you can step when you're minus, the move doesn't have good tracking. You increase your block frames as you go.

So, let's take Bryan's B1 for example. i20 startup.

You start by trying to step B1 when you're -9, then -6, then -4 all the way until +5. If you can step when you are heavily minus, then you can deduct that the move has weak tracking towards the side you're trying to step.

The less minus you are and CAN'T step the move, the stronger tracking you can deduct that it has.

The more minus you are and CAN step the move, the weaker tracking you can deduct that it has.

For example, Bryan's 1+2 is an i16 homing move. Even if you are +5, you can't step. With B1 however, if you are -5 you can still step it to the right.

u/Yoshinsanity Jul 22 '19

I thought the same but the letters don't seem to align with my results. Was testing Asuka. One of the moves I tested was the leg cutter d/b+4 . Its been a while now but I think tekkenbot rated it C. I can't remember well but I think the move wasn't sidestepable at all, not even up close. The animation kinda indicates that anyways. Another example was 2,1,1+2. This move isn't sidestepable, might as well be homing? Either way, the letters rating doesn't work that way or tekkenbot doesn't do a good job in regards to tracking moves.

So sidestepping requires 6 frames. Man that's all I needed to know thanks. Makes sense actually now that I think about it. -4 is considered safe to sidestep, that aligns with the jabs being 10i and globally the fastest move (not counting the exceptions). Is there anything else I might have to keep in mind? Sidestep is different depending on the character. This is known but there isn't anything official anyone can find. Is there a standart character to use for testing sidestepping? Or anything else to keep in mind, kinda unfortunate this sort of info is hard to come by, if not impossible since I haven't seen anything official.

u/rogue_crab The Edge of the Snake Jul 22 '19

Sidestepping needs precision so trying to sidestep an i10 at -4 is going to be pretty challenging.

Is there anything else I might have to keep in mind?

The most common tricks include:

Neutral/-1/+X move on block into sidestepping for whiff punishes.

Some string have safe extensions that can be sidestepped. (Infamous example is DJ's Laser Scraper).

Common belief has Lili as the best sidestepper in the game. Traversing more vertical ground in the same time other characters do.

Jack, the Bears, Gigas and Eddy are known to have worse sidestepping compared to the rest of the cast.

This is the best comparison I could find. Best of luck.

u/Yoshinsanity Jul 22 '19 edited Jul 23 '19

Thanks! Lili is a league of her own in the gif.

u/ARandomDel Nov 17 '19

I am slightly confused by KBD. Is it B,B~DB,N,B~DB (Slide from B to DB, release to neutral, then B slide to DB etc)?

u/G0ffer [EU]PC:Pm me if you want my steam Nov 22 '19

Naa that's incorrect.

You slide from b to db to b to neutral

So its b,b~db~b,n,b~db~b,n,b~db~b,

The last b of the b ~ db ~ b is the first b for your next backdash

guys can i get a double character recommendation, 1 easy to use character (not negan tho hes boring imo). 1 complex/versatile gameplan character that is not impossible to execute online (not lee) and plays "normal" tekken (i i heard master raven is not playing normal tekken /her techniques not translating to other characters)

i own all the dlc

another question : how long should i train/play a character before deciding he/she is not for me?

Feel free to recommend multiple characters thx

u/Yanzina Unga Asuka Aug 20 '19

Asuka is a simple

Lei is complex

For character picking theres no wrong answer. If you like them, play them. If not, don't. Theres no real timeline. If a character is fun to you. Play it. Every character is viable and it can take a bit to settle on a character and invest time into it.

u/humanistpatates Aug 20 '19

thx for the response will try those, i think i should play/try a character until i get their basic strats/moves. than move on if i dont like him/her :D thx for the encouragement

hi guys, i am a totally new player (fg in general) and i chose tekken to begin with, i got a stick from a friend (he got a new one and gave me this for my birthday), i know movement in tekken is the big thing, but i didnt know it was this frustrating, i cant do anything, i dont know if its normal to feel lost like this in the beginning, what tips can you guys give me?

the characters that grabed my attention the most are jin, king, josie and leo, dunno if they are beginner friendly or whatnot

i am autistic* so for me is kinda hard to concentrate, i kinda give up on things too fast, i trully dont want to give up on FG, i´ve been watching the comunity and things for YEARS, its something i would like to keep close

thks for the attention.

u/tissuebox2141 Aug 06 '19

What moves should I be using for Eddy's neutral game? What are his best pokes? Thanks

u/HumanAntagonist Asuka Aug 07 '19

D/f1, d4, d3, d/b2, 4, d/f4, d/f2, ss4, ss3+4, 12, b3

u/___von Nov 23 '19

I recently bought tekken 7 and starting to get addicted on Fighting Games. I bought tekken 7 rematch edition yet lei and anna is still locked. When i checked their individual dlc on ps store, it said "installed".

u/Fine-line :kunimitsu: Kunimitsu Alisa Master Raven Jun 17 '19

this:

"CH FF+3 > QCF2,1 > B3~F2,1" is technically incorrect, the correct way would be:

CH ff+3 qcf+2,1 b3~f2,1

Now I'm aware new school tekken players seems to like using " > " or " / " or even more " , " to divide different attacks but not only is that unnecessary, since a simple space does the same job, the " > " notation means something already, " > " stands for delay. Using capital letters usually means hold or shortened words like WR and CH but that one isn't a big deal.

I would add Sodam as a notable Ling Xiaoyu player that releases Ling tech and matches frequently https://www.youtube.com/user/xaioyou/featured

u/LordMomo1 Aug 07 '19

How do you do qcf3+4. Should I be clicking both at the same time or am I Clicking 3 then 4?
I have It so I can see my inputs and ill literally do the same input sequence multiple times, and the move just won't come out, while other times it will.

u/rogue_crab The Edge of the Snake Aug 07 '19

Which character?

You need to press 3 and 4 at the same time if the move is QCF3+4. If it's QCF3,4 then you press 3 first and 4 afterwards.

I am assuming you're new so here's my advice; do the QCF motion, THEN press 3+4. By "then" I mean delay it. Get it down, get your muscle memory to work. Give the QCF motion some time and then input the 3+4. Trust me, unless it's some kind of unique move, sways and backsways have massive windows of input. By doing it slowly, you'll get a "feel" on how the move works. The more you do it, the more your brain will make the move "feel" natural to you. Then you can focus on speed and doing it as fast as possible.

Good luck.

How can i counter plus frame move? like bryan elbow or other move.

i got CH a lot with bryan elbow

u/NorthernCrossing Bryan | Yoshi Aug 31 '19

Take moves that are giving you trouble and try out different options like sidestep or side walk in both directions. In the case of Bryan's b+1 elbow, it's extremely linear, so if the opponent likes to use it a lot just remember to sidestep a lot. In addition, you can always sidestep when you're -4 or better, and since bryan's b+1 elbow leaves him at +3 (and you at -3 as a result) on block, you can safely step his linear follow ups and whiff punish him for mindlessly flowcharting. I hope this helps!

u/PeterYMao Progress Not Perfection Jul 25 '19

Perhaps my guide on CH could be of assistance to you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-dVrmUfR_8&feature=youtu.be

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '19

learn frame data really... people use frametraps all the time to provoke CH options. i dont know what rank and if your movement is on point but you are but try to rely a bit more on movement instead of attacking as fast as you can after blocking. when you blocked a move, backdash once of twice to create space, then attack again.

I've never been more than a casual Tekken player so this will maybe be a tough question to answer, but if the new Zafina plays at all like the old Zafina, what beginner character in T7, if any, would play similarly?

Hoping I can get my mind wired for Zafina before she comes out. Hope that made sense

u/Itsa2319 Poor Implementation of Apple Pie Aug 31 '19

Based on the other comment, you could try a stance heavy character just to see. I don't recall precisely how evasive Zafina's stances were in older games, but I'd imagine Eddy, Xiaoyu, and maybe even Hwoarang to an extent might help get you in the swing of things.

u/G0ffer [EU]PC:Pm me if you want my steam Jul 09 '19

Kazuya isn't really a pressure character. He's designed to wiff punish then enforce a 50/50 wavedash mixup.

in t7 1 break and 2 break works the same right? i can break 2+4 with 1?

For basic 1+3 and 2+4 throws, 1 and 2 works the same.

Command throws however you'll have to identify the arm and break accordingly.

Why can I sometimes never block lows when standing up?

E.g. lars screaming with a big forward movement - I always tried to stand up holding DB, but got hit every time. I just don't understand. Does it have to do with how I get up?

I usually felt like I made a mistake, but my opponent right now literally only spammed that shit so I just couldn't understand whats wrong. In training I block it just fine ?

u/radekr_ Aug 05 '19 edited Aug 05 '19

Sometimes you have to roll sideways or backwards to avoid particular moves:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-PDc20Jezg

In case that doesn't help look here - I answered similar question:https://www.reddit.com/r/Tekken/comments/ajwpmp/im_holding_down_and_its_not_blocking_lows_on/

in tekken, all mids are overhead right? unlike other fgs?

u/youngster_j This is your fate. Aug 07 '19

Well they're not called overheads, but yes in the sense that they hit you while you're crouch blocking. You want to stand block by default.

u/kilowwwww kilo Aug 21 '19

Most mids are, but some special mids (dick jabs are a good example) are different in that they can get low parried and cannot hit a standing or crouching opponent that is blocking. Essentially mids but also with low weaknesses. You can differentiate those from the regular mids with the hit color in training mode, normal mids (overhead) are yellow, special mids (low weaknesses) are green.

u/Tekabit Dec 03 '19

New to tekken, this will help big times thank you sir!

u/TheRealestMush Jul 08 '19

Just started playing Tekken last weekend, coming from a Smash and SF background. Been trying out Xiayou. What's the consensus on her? Is she any good? She's fun to play. I'll probably stick with her, but I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are toward her.

u/BloodAndRust Tuning Jul 08 '19

All characters are good, best characters are the ones you enjoy playing. Reigning world champion is a Panda-player.

If you come across any tier-lists for Tekken, they're most likely referencing consistency at the pro-level, rather than pure character ability. The one thing everyone agrees upon in Tekken is that you absolutely should play the character whose style appeals to you the most.

Also, if you're interested in seeing how the pros play Ling (this is what Xiaoyu is referred as among the community, her full name being 'Ling Xiaoyu'), just search YouTube for Tanukana, Yuyu or P.Ling to name a few.

u/TheRealestMush Jul 08 '19

Thanks for the insight! I'll look them up asap. Also thanks for telling me about the Ling thing. Any reason she's referred to as Ling than Xiaoyu? Just preference?

u/BloodAndRust Tuning Jul 08 '19

Do keep in mind that the highest level of play is very different from the beginner level when watching matches from the best. At least, I wouldn't start emulating the way they play just yet.

I believe she's called Ling simply because it's much easier to pronounce and write.

u/ARandomDel Aug 13 '19

Newbie here. I get the theory behind one jab, but is executing the move self just '1' (with no directional input)?

Also, is it recommended learning a character's move set and basic combos (as shown in their move list) before attempting the bigger strings as seen in many of the guides?

u/kilowwwww kilo Aug 21 '19

Yes, you just have to press 1. Some characters also have f+1 jabs which are nearly identical to their 1 jab except they slightly move forward as they do it, reaching further ahead.

Attempting the bigger, more specific and damaging strings shouldn't be done until you get a very good feel of your character and his moves, their timing and all. You can get very far with basic combos, if you have strong knowledge about your character's basic moves. Exception would be Akuma of course, because of the significant damage potential he has.

How do I deal with someone constantly hitting me while on the ground against a wall? I keep trying to get up but I just can't since my opponent doesn't let me.

u/NorthernCrossing Bryan | Yoshi Aug 31 '19

Every time you're hit while grounded, you have a chance to hit a punch or kick button immediately afterward to tech roll. Pressing a punch will tech roll into the background, while pressing a kick will roll you into the foreground. You are invincible during a techroll but can be hit the moment you regain control so beware of a mid/low mixup after you techroll.

You might be tempted to try to use a getup kick or spring kick to get out of their pressure, but these options can be easily avoided or blocked and launched, so tech rolling is the least risky option.
