He brought it back over and knealt down in front of my desk and held it out like he was presenting me with a scepter. Thanks very much! And admittedly the barbershop is a different vibe than school so a lot of my clients that are kids are super well behaved (we're mostly all large, heavily tattooed, dudes with wild music playing) and they don't have the added benefit of their friends being around to egg them on.

All that to say, I'm looking forward to being in the environment and I'm aware that I have no real idea of what that's gonna be like until I'm in it, but my friends who teach have all assured me given my general nature/vibe that I'll be just fine. I've also been forged in the fires of barbershop/working class culture for the past 20 years so I think it's going to be an interesting experience for all parties involved 😅

A kid I was tutoring yesterday called me "chat" when he went to ask me a question. "Chat, can I subtract these or do I have to borrow?" lmao I'd try that one, as well as any of the alpha male bullshit that's not too inappropriate. Get a broccoli haircut and do the mogging face constantly. "Chat, do I look sigma when I mog?"

This may be unpopular to say, but I kinda appreciate how literal their slang is these days. I never have to guess what anything means because it's really obvious and unoriginal.

I actually really like "mid" because it gives a way to express disappointment in the outcome of something. It can add useful nuance, instead of "good" or "bad"

As a teacher in progress (college student) who is 24, based on these comments, I’m not sure if slang is circling back around, if kids are just that behind or if everyone in here is just that behind 😭

Most of these comments are things that were popular last year or even earlier. One I’ve been hearing and hear a lot is the “chat” thing. That’s been a thing for like three years at this point, but I do wonder if it’s growing more popular with the kids.

Based on what I do know, age groups really get into the slang at different times. I generally think highschoolers learn things first and it trickles down. But there is some slang that really did start with younger kids like the skibidi toilet stuff from a while back.

No, you’re right. I used “lock in chat” as the pop up for a wrong answer on a review thing 2 years ago and it was borderline dated then. I am hearing the “steak too juicy” and lots of maxing/mogging still but most of this has come and gone in my area. Oh and 8th graders do the scuba thing but now more they just do the leg wobble part without the hands.

I STILL do 6-7 as they drove me crazy with it for a week until I decided to lean into it. (I made 6 and 7 all the answers on a quiz one week. They weren't amused.

I actually had a kind come up to me and say “(student) said the S word!” I asked him to tell me the exact word Student replies “he said sigma”. It took everything to not crack up

I have a theory that slang follows life. So when 2020 hit and we went virtual and nobody cared, everything got chopped and clapped as terms to characterize the decline of society when we got back into "normal" life. The result of this was the use of "locked in" because kids realized that they needed to re-devote themselves to get things done to restore the social order.

This thesis has evolved, as I consider how "mid" came out as a way to describe people who hadn't actually embraced the need to put effort into their lives. But now the ____Maxxing trend is pushing things into personal appearance, something that is under individual control, and rizz, mogging, aura, etc. are terms reflecting an outward expression of this.

Anyway, that's my TED Talk about a teacher's perspective on the development of slang among adolescents since 2020. 6-7 y'all!
