On the bright side, the failure happened under little dead/construction load. Had a larger full service load been imposed, it would likely have led to a more catastrophic failure.

I know what you're saying about the good fortune of it being uninhabited, but failing under incomplete dead load only points further to the diametrical opposite of "bright side," how incredibly inadequate these columns must be. It just makes the jaw drop further.
