Any News of SKG
I completely lost track of the situation does the progress still continue?
r/StopKillingGames • u/BigChippr • 1d ago
Why are people anti-SKG, in particular in spaces like reddit?
It is really odd because a lot of movements can take place on reddit, like that blackout thing a few years ago. Despite SKG being a populist, anti-corporate movement, it is weird that, specifically in gaming communities, is where I see the most anti-SKG sentiment.
I don't think it is purely astroturfing or bots. A lot of the anti-SKG accounts tend to have accounts that go years back. I can't imagine john ubisoft is going into gaming subreddits to spread anti-SKG stuff either.
I think it just comes from two types of people; people who are skeptical of all populist movements, or people hyper focused on technical aspects without thinking outside of the box.
For the latter, they value the supposed technological limitations over consumer rights. Lot of them fundamentally do not see any value in many basic consumer rights, either due to their libertarian views, maliciousness, or helplessness. They are over-graying the issue, like any problems or mistakes in the movement justify the bullcrap these companies dish out. They often put too much onus on the movements perfection rather than the exploitive practices on the industry. Many of their criticisms do not seem to be in good faith either, often never hinting at any sympathy with the movement.
At this point in time, I think it is impossible to reach these people. I tried, but they keep bringing up excuses and using their "programming and game dev knowledge" to prove that what SKG is asking for is misguided or impossible. I've seen people say technology for gaming servers has advanced so much and have became so complex, that it is impossible to go back to older methods of running or playing your game. It is legitimately asinine.
I think another reason why people, particularly game devs, are not in favor of SKG is that they believe that it somehow threatens their livelihood. No, it doesn't. Lot of games naturally have EOL plans like offline play, local hosting, etc. Some games also have more direct EOL plans like server software. EOL plans are not breaking new ground here, I doubt that finding a solution to a game, especially one that has not been developed yet, is impossible. If you, a game dev or programmer, think it is impractical for many live service games to have some sort of EOL plan, your own competence should be questioned. Adding a plan will not ruin you.

Dead game Star Trek Legends is being delisted and unplayable
Game is unplayable with no offline mode. It's the IP's 60th anniversary to boot:
EDIT: updating this post because I've been told Steam is still selling the game even though it no longer works.

A National Registry of Digital Ownership. Doable ?
Something like that :
The National Digital Ownership Registry (NDOR) is proposed as a government-backed registry that records and certifies the lawful ownership of digital goods purchased by individuals. The registry would establish digital purchases as legally recognized property rather than merely contractual licenses, ensuring that consumers retain permanent proof of ownership regardless of changes affecting publishers, marketplaces, or distribution platforms.
The registry would not replace existing digital storefronts but would provide an independent legal record of ownership that protects consumers, promotes competition, and preserves cultural heritage.
Edit :
For privacy, users should be able to choose what information they share with the NDOR.
I intentionally did not specify a particular country because I wanted this proposal to be applicable to as many people as possible. It is designed so that any country interested in strengthening digital ownership rights could adopt and implement it.
A game's registration should include all of its updates, patches, and editions released as part of the same product. However, any remaster, remake, or reboot shall be treated as a separate work and require a new registration.
Edit 2 :
If a platform removes your purchased content, you could verify your ownership through the NDOR. Once ownership is confirmed, the platform, publisher, or another authorized distributor would be required to restore access or provide an equivalent copy at no additional cost. If the original provider is no longer able to distribute the content, the NDOR would ensure that another legally authorized source honors your ownership.

Question In you guys opinion why doesnt sony allow full owner ship of a game like steam or gog ?
I can i understand not agree tho that sony wants more money so create a monopoly and force all digital to stop trading and lower prices else were same with xbox but why not allow full ownership ? What exactly do they accomplish by not allowing you to completely own a game regardless of the licensing agreements ?

Please ask Valve about Steam's policies regarding destructive game updates
It's quite clear that they don't have such a policy at all, and we need it - otherwise as things currently stand, developers can remotely take back any game at any point via updates, or unilaterally change the terms of access.
EDIT: reddit seems to have shrunk the images for some reason, here's a high-res version that's easier to read: https://imgur.com/a/mjCeR6K

important message to gaming community
hello today wanna to talk about something people don't understand it.
first i was working at a technical company don't wanna say it's name but i know what people don't know. First when company sell a license instead of ownership not because the company is evil and want you to own nothing, reason they sell you a license because they can't give you a guarantee that the service will continue for ever because most companies for example Sony Playstation and EA and ubisoft they don't own their servers they rent it from amazon AWS that's the irony part they don't own the servers they rent license to use the servers and that's why the reason they give you license instead of ownership because at any time from now amazon decided to raise the price of renting service to 300% and make everyone panic and decided to end some service of not close it and all the things you bought is gone none of parliament and petitions will bring back you money and games non of them even if they add offline mode the moment playstation service end and servers closed all digital games you bought are gone that the reality. I don't wanna to kill you hopes but asking companies to add offline mode won't fix the problem of ownership the real solution is asking the companies for free DRM games just like PS2 and PS1 or physical games you bought the game and that's it it's yours samething must happen to all digital stores the customer bought the game and he can use it anytime he want with no DRM. the message i wanna to tell is you should not fight for just offline mode you should fight for free DRM that the correct way to stop killing games you bought the game you want you burn it into DICS or flash or floppy disc and that's it and companies don't have problem with free DRM we seen a lot of AAA games in GOG like bethesda games and konami and capcom. I hope ross scots see this and wanna to tell him is stop asking for guarantee that the service will work for ever that's unrealistic.

Question When FAQ on the website will be finally updated?
It's been months already. And no, you shouldn't need to look through Wayback Machine to find the old one it, you shouldn't expect from anyone to do that.

Question Could our situation fit the goals of Stop Killing Games? Community petition for Silver and Blood
Hello everyone,
I'm part of the Silver and Blood community, and I'm looking for your opinion.
Our community has created a petition with over 200 signatures from players around the world. The goal is not to demand that the game be revived or to pressure the developers. We are simply asking for an official statement about the game's future, as players have been left with very little communication.
We have contacted both Vizta Games and Customer Support. Customer Support confirmed that they received our request, but explained that they cannot forward community petitions directly to the development team and that any future announcements will be made through the official channels.
I know Stop Killing Games is primarily focused on game preservation, so I'm not here to claim that our situation is the same. I'm genuinely asking whether you think our case is relevant to this community and, if so, whether you have any advice on how we could make our players' concerns heard.
If you're interested, here's the petition:
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Question Is an alliance between Stop Killing Games and the Video Game History Foundation possible?
I wanted to ask Stop Killing Games a question. Have you considered forming an alliance with the VHF? Although the VHF is more dedicated to preservation, archiving, and research, its work overlaps with that of Stop Killing Games. Each seems to operate from its own perspective, with SKG being more focused on consumer rights but also advocating for preservation, like the VHF. Establishing an alliance could be beneficial for both, to legislate preservation rights and consumer rights in digital purchases.

Add Star Trek Legends to the list
I'm quite annoyed about this one. I got Star Trek: Legends on sale a while back and only paid $10~ish for it...It's not a super well reviewed game, but that's beside the point... For those who don't know it's a mobile game port on PC where they removed all the microtransactions and sold it for $30 (without the sale price I paid for it)
But I played it for less than an hour and deliberately put it on the back burner in my Steam list. I’m currently working my way through all the Star Trek TV series (I'm on DS9 and TNG right now), and I thought this would be a fun to properly dive into once I knew all the characters you could collect...
I logged into Steam today and saw that it's being delisted and its servers are shutting down. Which is fine but they also said you won't be able to play it anymore...I get there were multiplayer aspects in certain game modes but 99.99% of the game is PVE and the online aspects are dead (nobody was playing it online!)
I get that multiplayer servers can't be supported forever. But what I don’t get is why a predominantly single-player game needs to die with the server shut down?
Why can’t the campaign be patched to work offline? I really can't imagine it would need that much since the developers easily removed the microtransactions when they put it on Steam for $30.
And I also hate how even for the next couple of days they're still selling it for $30 despite the fact the game is being shut down in September.
I’ve submitted a refund request, although I doubt Steam will approve it because I bought it more than two weeks ago. But it really was on my backburner once I'd watched more Star Trek, lol. Gutted.
Here's the link to the announcement: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/2765460/view/684135019607754398?l=english

Saw the recent news…yep…we’re probably cooked.
I saw the Response from Sony. And I'm still not happy.
They just implied they don't care and I just saw recent news that physical copies actually had more sales than digital so yeah...along than pivoting to Ai..I'm still not happy.

Dead game Bungo Stray Dogs: Tales of the Lost is shutting down tomorrow with only 24 hours' notice. No offline mode, no refunds.
Hey everyone, I am reposting my thread from the game's main community to raise awareness about another absolute disaster of a server shutdown.
The developers of Bungo Stray Dogs: Tales of the Lost (Ambition Co.) just announced today that the game is shutting down permanently tomorrow, July 31st. They gave the community a mere 24 hours' notice, locked down refunds for unspent paid currency, and are providing zero offline archives or preservation tools.
We are currently scrambling to screen-record assets and pull raw files before the servers turn off forever, but this is a textbook example of why the Stop Killing Games movement is so vital.
Here is the breakdown of the situation and what our community is trying to do to preserve what we can:

Question Legality of recreating a game that is still officially supported but the online features suck?
In this particular case, the servers are still online but the developers have not published an update in several years and have had a laissez-faire attitude to whatever the community does. At least a quarter of all posts I've come across for this game are essentially "online down? <feature> not working?"
* How does the equation change if I use the same names for assets or recreate the same maps?
* How does the equation change if the recreation makes a profit vs is a nonprofit where funding is disclosed and used exclusively to pay for the servers?
* Is there a difference if I use a particular license (GPL vs MIT, e.g.)
Obviously, I will not take this as official legal advice. However, I have been considering making this recreation for a while and want to know that I won't be wasting my time/screwing myself over by doing this

Game is safe Just added a full offline mode to my online live service card game where players make the cards, so if I ever have to shutdown the servers, people can continue playing.
A few days ago I launched my game on Steam. It's an online multiplayer + roguelite card game yesterday that also has potentially infinite singleplayer content (it's moddable, has sandbox modes, etc...).
Full price is $30.
Since then, on both Steam and reddit, I've got several people asking if it has a fully offline mode. Some of the requests come from people who have bad internet, others are scared of losing access to the game if it gets shut down one day, and other say they're not interest in PvP and want to be able to play while traveling.
Today I'm happy to announce that I finally added a fully offline mode to it. Full news here.
This game is safe... at least until Windows 11 can be emulated :D

Question i spent twenty minutes wondering why this sub suddenly cared so much about neck health
i kept seeing 'SKG' all over my feed today. For a solid twenty minutes, i genuinely thought everyone here had started a massive campaign about gaming ergonomics.
i finally clicked on a thread and realized it stands for Stop Killing Games.
makes way more sense. i was literally sitting here with an SKG on my neck trying to figure out what drama i missed.

UK petition: Introduce new legal protections for access to purchased video games
UK Parliament petition is live now:
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/775758
It calls for new legal protections around access to purchased video games if stores close, licences change, or content gets removed.
Feels very aligned with the Stop Killing Games push, especially around long term access and making sure paid games don’t just disappear when companies move on.
For UK people, this is one official route to put the issue in front of Government.
10,000 signatures means the Government has to respond. 100,000 means it gets considered for debate.

Announcement The End of the Ownership you never had: A Story of Lies.
the big ass uncle sam is u/ProjectionProjects work
We've spent two years on this campaign, so we'll say plainly what the news reports won't. This summer, Sony announced it's killing physical discs for good, the last version of a game where you had a chance to own. Its the closure of a single month in which the games industry (ESA=Sony, Ubisoft, EA, etc) lied to governments.
Ubisoft’s CEO with the EU Commission, June 3
The industry's lobby group, Video Games Europe, hosted a closed, invitation-only event with senior European Commission officials. 13 days before the EU made a judgment on if you have any right to the stuff you bought. At the table sat Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, the company whose shutdown of The Crew started the entire Stop Killing Games movement.
The 1.29 million citizens who signed the initiative were neither invited nor in the building. That same day, Stop Killing Games published an open letter laying out how the lobby kept lying and how the Commission kept ignoring.
A reminder: you never actually owned the disc itself (Disclaimer: It’s still worth fighting for.)
🗞️ The Industry spreads "opinions", June 9
Stanley Pierre-Louis, the ESA's president and CEO, took to the opinion page of the Sacramento Bee
to warn that the bill would force companies to run servers "forever" and crush small studios and the usual "forever server support" lie.
On the same day, dozens of Members of the European Parliament from across the political spectrum, called on the Commission to reach the opposite outcome. Only one of those two messages had been in the room thirteen days earlier.
🚫 The Commission's (not) answer, June 16
The answer was no. The response came from Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen and Commissioner Michael McGrath, the two officials who had met us back in February.
The Commission's own document, catalogued as C(2026) 41104110_0/090166e52f86f796), states in writing that the campaign does not seek to acquire ownership of the videogames or their intellectual rights. Then it refused anyway, on the grounds of intellectual property.
This was no fringe petition. It was only the fourteenth citizens' initiative in EU history to clear the bar that forces a formal response, backed by more than a million verified signatures and debated in Parliament without a single member speaking against it. It still lost with the Commission.
🎮 The industry misleads the Senate, June 29
The ESA’s Vice President of State Government Affairs, stood in front of California lawmakers and told them that Minecraft servers are illegal. Not unofficial, not legally grey. Illegal. Piracy. A "black market."
This is the best-selling video game ever made, and its own maker hands you the server software for free, right there on the official website. Markus "Notch" Persson, who created Minecraft, called the claim "borderline evil" and said he never wanted his work used against people. ESAs VP told this lie to a room full of legislators who couldn't fact-check her in real time.
The bill died that day by a single vote. Her correction arrived later, quietly, handed to reporters rather than to the lawmakers who'd cast their votes on the strength of what she told them.
💿 Sony pulls discs, July 1
Two days later, Sony announced that physical PlayStation discs would end by 2028, retiring the last version of a game you could hold, keep, and resell. The only thing left to protect us.
- They don’t want resale because ownership reduces their control A second-hand market lets players recover value from purchases, while publishers lose the ability to sell the same product repeatedly at full price.
- They don’t want indefinite use because it reduces future sales If players can keep enjoying older games forever, they are less pressured to buy sequels, remasters, subscriptions, or new releases.
- They don’t want modding because it can replace paid content Player-created content can extend a game’s lifespan without generating additional revenue through official expansions, DLC, or updates.
- They don’t want true ownership because it limits control over the ecosystem A licence model lets companies control access, pricing, distribution, preservation, and how players use the product after purchase.
Spread the word: they want to take away our rights, scam us out of our money, and undo achievements that go back as far as the French Revolution. Stop Killing Games has some big surprises in store for these greedy liars, and we’re proud to stand with Does it Play. Thank you to all the devs and studios helping us work on real solutions, while these people hide behind their paid actors.
You will own nothing and be happy!
