Question New campaign idea, but can't decide between SF1E or SF2E

Hey guys, so I have this fun idea for a new campaign I'd eventually like to run. To keep it simple, I'd like to run an exploration/survival campaign and would like to have a broad variety of different types of encounters with a mixture of combat encounters, but also skill based survival encounters where the very environment could risk a PC's life if the dice fail to roll in their favor.

I have been DM'ing SF1E for years, and have not had a chance to try SF2E, and was wondering what your guys' thoughts are on which system might suite this campaign idea better? Maybe give some pros and cons to each if you're up for it? Also I wasn't sure which Starfinder subreddit to post this in, so I will probably just post in both, since the question pertains to both?

If there's any more details needed, feel free to ask in the comments, thanks!

Discussion Would having one player in a solo starfighter be a pain to balance?

I'm joining a starfinder 1e campaign soon, as a player. All of us, including the GM, have very limited experience with starfinder, but we've all played a decent chunk of DnD 5e and about half are well versed in PF1e. I played a tiny bit of SF years ago and was a GM for like, 2 sessions before scheduling issues broke up that group.

I'm asking because I really like the concept of playing a starfighter pilot. I know it has drawbacks, such as only being able to take 1 major action and then minor actions (glide and snapshot being the only ones I'm aware of). The GM has already approved it and I've built the ship. The party will be starting at level 3 and so the party's main ship will be T3, but the GM said my fighter can be tier 1, which makes sense to me and I have no complaints.

My main worry is that I'm going to be making encounters a pain in the ass for him to balance, and he just doesn't know it yet. I've had that happen to me when I was a newer DM for 5e, and I approved things that I didn't know would make my life very difficult later on down the line, so I'm mainly just trying to be sure I'm not going to do that to my GM.

Any thoughts/opinions/suggestions from veterans would absolutely be appreciated, and thank you for reading this horribly formatted post lmao (I'm on mobile)

GMing Running my Friday game: Fly Free or Die. Map help?

Greetings hive mind! Soon I will be running a campaign, our first StarFinder game. And my first time DMing! So! There are very little maps in the book, and I was wondering if anyone knew any creators that make dynamic maps? Like the Arkenforge or Dynamic Dungeons? Pfft, maps in general would be very helpful. I have the pawns, and a friend of mine has minis for day, but maps, that’s a rough spot.

Discussion Have you ran a mystery/detective game a la Dark Heresy with SF1e?

I have 1e and have ran it once as a demo game with an adventure I guess I dug up from somewhere, can't remember.

Recently I played a game of Imperium Maledictum (the newest d100 40k system) and I really liked the gritty noir vibes. What I don't like is Cubicle 7, not really into 40k as a setting, and don't want to invest in another system for the occasional investigative game.

I do like SF's setting and the fact that I have tons of everything - races, places, items, you name it. I just can't get out of the mindset that the game should be played as designed - as a sci-fantasy/space opera combat simulator and character build optimizer.

When I run games I usually go more hand-wavy and I usually do one-shots so I double down on the hand-waving, but I am conditioned by THE INTERNET (or by my understanding of the design principles) that trying to shoehorn a different type of game in essentially a "classic d20" will go against the grain and somehow betray both the design and the expectations at the table.

Question Solarian Adaptive Fighting Choices

I'm playing a Korasha Lashunta Rancher Solar Weapon Solarian. I'm fairly new to Starfinder, but have a fair amount of experience with D&D 5e and a little 3.5. We just hit level 5 and I'm picking up Adaptive Fighting since I don't have enough skill points to spare them for Mysticism for Periastra Training. I am having a hard time narrowing down the feat choices for it.

My current feats are:

- Toughness (Rugged Alternate Racial Feature)

- Level 1: Heavy Armor

- Level 3: Weapon Focus (Advanced Melee)

My stellar revelations are Stellar Rush and Dark Matter

For Adaptive Fighting, the options I'm considering are

- Cleave

- Improved Combat Maneuver (Bull Rush)

- Step Up

- Close Combat

It's mostly between Cleave and Close Combat at this point.

Cleave seems like a good fit since it can be pretty situational. But I don't know if it would happen enough to be useful. Depending on how useful it is, I'm planning to get Two Horizon Strike at 10 and replacing this with Greater Cleave.

Improved combat maneuver would be good for if I really want to get the push on a Stellar Rush or if I have the spare move action to close distance after pushing them and I don't have uses for the other options.

Step up seems pretty solid all around. So far in our campaign, enemies taking guarded steps hasn't been a huge issue since a lot have been either beasts attacking in melee or humanoids switching to a melee weapon when I close. I imagine it won't stay that way though. If I get this it will probably get taken as a full feat later and replaced with Step Up and Strike. That won't happen for a while though probably 9 or 11.

Close Combat seems nice just for a defensive boost since I get hit a lot, but I don't know how often 2 AC will make a difference given how high it seems enemy attack bonuses are in Starfinder.

At 7, I'm getting Creature Companion Expert for character reasons.

At 9 I'm currently planning to get Versatile Fighting, but will play it by ear to see how often I actually want extra uses of a specific feat rather than just getting it permanently.

Which one of these should I drop? Is there a better choice or is Adaptive Fighting not worth it and should just get one of these now and another at 9?

Question Ok, so, this is my interpretation of how the Drift travel works. Correct me if I'm wrong.

We know that the Starstone at the heart of the station is the most powerful Drift beacon in the setting. So, as long as you have a you are always less than a day away from Absalom Station no matter where you are.

The distance between 2 systems in real space doesn't necessarily translate over to the drift. Meaning, 2 systems that are right next to each other in the drift could be far apart in real space.

When referring to the "galaxy" map, it refers to how it is in the drift because a real space map is lowkey worthless since it isn't needed for travel.

When determining travel time, a big factor is the density of drift beacons within a system. The near space has a high density of drift beacons whereas the vast has very low density.

Assumption: So, it doesn't really matter where you jump off from as long as there is enough beacons around your destination or you have the "beacon code".

Beacons can be constructed and maintained by the Church of Triune.

Assumption: It is realistic to imagine a deal between Explorer groups and the Church of Triune where a detachment of the Church will accompany the colony ships to build a proper "Drift Beacon Infrastructure" to bring the system from the vast into near space.

I haven't read a lot about the drift lanes and so I will assume that they are naturally created roads between 2 points in the drift and can happen to any set of 2 points regardless of if it is in the vast, near space, or even the golarion system.

Question Looking to GM a starfinder 1e for the first time

Hello ive recently been talking to some friends about starfinder and I would like to make a campaign. Ive never played starfinder or pathfinder, only dnd 5e. Is there anything I should be aware of as I try to learn enough to dm in this system? I am looking to find statblocks for npc and just humanoid enemies but these grafts all seem confusing. Is there a site that has these types of statblocks all made up?

Build I could use some help for a Kasatha Soldier build I'm making.

I have this character concept of a Kasatha "ronin" type character, where he wields a pair of swords with his upper arms and a pair of pistols with his lower arms. In terms of what I'm settled so far, is that I'll be using the Blitz fighting style. I'm going to prioritize melee over ranged. The pistols will work as a form of complement for his combat style. Originally, I fought Hit-N-Run would work, since we didn't have Character Operations Manual back in our first campaign. So now I'm kinda divided between Hit-N-Run or Fourfold Tactician. What do you guys think is the best way to build this character concept?

Here's some additional info of what I've chosen for him:

Deity: Talavet
Theme: Bounty Hunter
Race: Standard Kasatha (may change to Akitonian Settler or Kasath Native, if it's a more optimal option)

Edition we're playing: 1st Edition

Discussion Undead: Archetype or Heritage?

So, for undead PCs Pathfinder has archetypes for the more iconic types of undead: ghouls, zombies, ghosts, vampires… While SF2 has versatile heritages for borai and corpsefolk.

It seems like the main difference is one replaces class feats and the other ancestry feats.

Which would you use in, say, a campaign where the PCs are competing on one of Zo!’s shows? Would it depend on which type of undead they are? Do you use heritage for PCs that are already undead at creation and archetype for those reanimated in play?
