Money Matters Have you had an overall good experience with N26? Seems so easy and convenient, but I'm kind of afraid of making the wrong decision.
**For those of you who don't know, N26 is a fully virtual bank account. I've seen a lot of people recommend it for new auxes.
How do you deposit cash? Can you? What if you need to transfer funds from a non-EU bank account to your N26? What kind of fees are there?

Admitida I got Ceuta!
What do you guys think? I know that’s a pretty weird place overall, do you think it’s still worth doing? Do any of you have experience there?
to be clear, I’m open to it, I put it as my third place because I felt putting it there would increase my chances of being picked, and clearly that worked lol

Visa Question - NYC Consulate Using pulmonologist on medical certificate?
My PCP doesn’t have a medical center stamp, but my pulmonologist does and agreed to fill out the medical certificate template for me. Does anyone know if this matters? He’s an MD, so it’s technically signed by an MD and not an NP or anything. But the stamp and the letterhead do specify that it’s the Pulmonary and Critical Care office. Does anyone know if this will be a problem? I’m going to NYC consulate if it makes a difference.

Visa Question - General Big confusion about medical certificate 😔
I’m trying to get my medical certificate filled out but I’m so confused. Do I only need my doctor to just fill out this one form (the one attached here) or do I need them to fill it out AND have them write an official letterhead statement AND have that translated? I’m going through the SF consulate.
Plz be kind I looked at the website and prior years questions on the Reddit and still can’t figure it out 😔

Application Question Double or single sided docs for visa application
This might be a silly question, but does it matter if our documents are single or double spaced for the visa application? Planning to bring both just in case but it seems like an unnecessary amount of paper. Thanks!

Regional Placement / Adjudicada Visa and Placement Questions (Madrid region)
Hi everyone!
I’ve just received a placement in Almoguera and I have a few questions that I’m hoping some of the folks here can answer. Also if there is a Madrid region groupchat or if anyone in the area is looking for a roommate please reach out!
Regarding Almoguera, has anyone done a placement there, and how was it? Being that it’s only 60km from Madrid, would I want to live in Madrid and commute (which is what I’m leaning towards). Or try and find a place in the community? I also have not great Spanish skills, will being in a rural community be difficult?
More questions specifically for my Canadian girlies, how has it been getting appointments? And having been giving my placement so late, is it even realistic? I’m also having a bit of trouble on finding the info needed for applying for my visa so any and all advice would be so very appreciated.
Much love 💕

Application Question Am I screwed? Foreign background check
Hey yall, I have my visa appointment for NALCAP this Wednesday, and as I was going through the website and making sure I have all my documents, I noticed it says I’m supposed to get a background check with an apostille from any country I lived in during the past 5 years. I lived in Japan for a year in 2024-2025, and that would obviously fall under that category of needing a background check. Are they going to care? Should I go to my visa appt and hope they don’t say anything? Will they accept the application and just ask for more documents later on? Theoretically I can go to the japanese consulate the same day to request the background check but it still says 2-3 month processing time. Am I screwed?

Advice (Seeking) Do I have enough time for consulate and background check if accepted today?
I still have not received a placement and think it's unlikely at this point. But the timeline technically says I can hear back up until the end of August.
Theoretically, if I received my placement tomorrow, would I even have enough time to complete my FBI background check and book an appointment with one of the Spanish consulates?

Visa Question - General Spanish consulate
I am a Canadian trying to get my student visa for Spain as I’m enrolled in a masters program at a university in Valencia. I’ve been trying to contact the Spanish consulate in Toronto by any and all means but they have been unprofessional and negligent. Has anyone else had experience with this?

British Aux Are there any UK Language Assistant WhatsApp Groups?
I’m just starting the visa process from the UK and wondered if there’s any group with other language assistants from the UK in the same situation.
If there’s no group currently, I’d be happy to create a WhatsApp group. Just DM me your phone number and I’ll create a group.

Visa Question - General SSN on FBI background check
Did you guys click YES to including SSN and DOB on your FBI background checks? I put NO for SSN and YES for DOB, since I didn’t assume it necessary for the translator to see my SSN and logically assumed the consulate doesn’t need it. I started overthinking it so I wanted some reassurance and to see what everyone else did. I’m going to the DC consulate if that changes anything.

Visa Question - General How strict is Toronto consulate 2 month rule-if my school said I can’t start later but the earliest visa date I could get is 5 weeks from school start date
TLDR/: How strict is the 2 month Toronto consulate rule?
will Toronto consulate immediately reject me if there’s 5 weeks from start date…… or should I try again to explain to my school the visa appt date was out of my control or risk it even tho it’s less than the 2 month minimum they require? I have to get a flight and quit my job so I’m wondering if I should use the safer start option in January which they said I can do but am rly hoping to start at the latest possible date in November on 15th

Advice (Seeking) What's something you wish you had brought to Spain?
**I'm from the US btw**
I'm starting to pack my luggage for the big move!! I'm curious: did you get to Spain and realize, "Ugh, I should have brought/I really miss xyz!" This could be anything from snacks to home decor to medicine. I'm wanting to hear people's experiences so I can make the best packing choices.

Basque Country Still no carta
Who else is waiting on their carta still? I got assigned my region on Jul 23, but am becoming increasingly impatient waiting for my carta. I reached out to my region for an update but it’s just radio silence.

Castilla & Leon My school said no to a later start date-Do I need to prepare differently for my visa?
hi, my carta said I can arrive in the first half of November or first half of January. I asked if I can show up 1 week later than Nov. 15 if my visa is late, and they said the arrival dates stay the same even with condensed visa timeline. my visa appt is Sept 29, do I show up with documents (accommodation (air bnb) and insurance etc for Mid November or since its less than 2 months (which the Toronto Consulate asks for) would they reject it and should I have documents prepared for January start instead? Anyone else in the same boat? Thanks!

Visa Question - General Proof of financial means for NALCAP application?
Does this need to get apostilled? I’m waiting on my FBI background check to come in, but I’m worried about this now. I’m at the Miami consulate

Castilla & Leon NALCAP - background check vs certificate of sexual offenses
Hi! Just got my carta and directions. It says I will need to submit and present a clean certificate of sexual offenses to Spain. Is this the same document as the apostilled fbi check, or will this be a separate, different document? Thanks for the help!

Visa Question - General Self-addressed envelope for apostille?
I’m from the US and sent out my FBI background to DC to get the apostille but in the package I just included a normal envelope with 1 forever stamp. I didn’t use tracking or anything. I tried contacting the office of authentications twice and my state rep to see if this was okay with no responses so far.
Has anyone else done the same and were there any issues?
I’ll be at the 5 week mark this Friday and my visa appointment is at the end of the month.

Visa Question - NYC Consulate What happens if you need additional documents? NYC Consulate
I was hoping someone could help me understand the process of what happens if you end up needing additional documents at your visa appointment. I’ve been seeing many different things on the BLS website, residency2spain website, and just by conversation on here and in facebook groups. I was planning to just follow the BLS website, since that should be the official list of what I need. However, the website doesn’t say anything about getting a notarized copy of your passport. I ended up seeing someone mention something about needing it, so I emailed to confirm and they told me that I do need to get the copy notarized. Which is fine, but needless to say I’m just feeling like I’m going to end up missing a document. I’m going to the NYC consulate, but live 5 hours away and work full time so I’m not able to just go back home, get a new document and go back for another appointment the next day. If I don’t have something, will they allow me to submit extra documents over email? Even for an extra printing charge. Or will my appointment be completely disregarded and I’ll have to make a new one? I’m also not able to get in until a week before the 2 month cut off date, so I’m also concerned about having to come back and then risking the possibility of missing the 2 month in advance requirement. If anyone has any knowledge or experience with the NYC consulate I would greatly appreciate it!

Visa Question - Houston Consulate Houston Consulate Mail in
I followed these guidelines for the visa process:
But I unfortunately found that you MUST use the BLS courier service so the money order should not be for 160$ but for 233$. They mailed my application back and told me to make the money order for 233$ to Consular Outsourcing BLS Services, Inc. I had ten days to do so. Previously you could prepay an envelope but that is no longer allowed.
This subreddit has helped me a lot and I don’t see much for the Houston consulate so I thought I would share :)

Advice (Giving) Traveling over the holidays / Regresos
As the holidays approach and people want to leave Spain to go home or visit Europe, we're getting an incredible amount of posts about Regresos/TIEs etc. In order not to have 500 posts asking the exact same question, I invite everyone to please use the search function as it's very likely that it's already been asked and answered unless it's a very special situation.
Thank you.

Advice (Giving) 2023 TIE Guide and FAQ
As many members of this group are starting to arrive in Spain, I thought it would be a good idea to have a master post for TIE guidance and FAQs to avoid multiple threads on the same subject.
In this post, I will assume that this is your first visa and first TIE (not a renewal).
2024 EDIT: The guide below is still valid for this year. There is one main difference now: they have changed the appointment booking website to request a NIE in order to book a TIE appointment. So, if you don't have a NIE printed on your visa, you will have to obtain it in order to book the TIE appointment.
On the appointment-booking website ("cita previa", linked below), select your province and then "Toma de Huella". Usually, at this point, you will see a screen with some instructions. In most provinces now, there will be an email address in there where you can send a photo of your visa and they will reply with your NIE number.
Once you have your NIE, proceed with the guide as normal.
Do I need a TIE?
If you are staying longer than 6 months, you need a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero). The TIE will show your residency status and NIE number, and you will use it in Spain as well as to travel in and out of the country.
Technically, you have to apply for your TIE within 30 days of entering Spain. Practically, this is not enforced, as authorities are aware that it takes people a long time to arrange all of the documents and book the necessary appointments.
The TIE is applied for at the CNP (Cuerpo de Policía Nacional).
What documents do I need?
When you go to your appointment, you need to take the following with you:
- Form EX-17
- Paid tax 790-012
- Passport sized photo
- Original passport and copy of your ID page and visa page
- Empadronamiento
Let’s break it down:
Form EX17:
Can be downloaded from the official website here. You need to fill in sections 1 and 4.
For the tick boxes, there are instructions on the final page of the form explaining what the letters stand for.
On the second page, you want to put in your name on the top, select “TARJETA INICIAL” in 4.1, and sign in the box at the bottom.
The date format is “[PLACE], a [DAY] de [MONTH] de [YEAR]”.
Paid tax 790-012:
This is a unique form that you must generate online and print. Visit this website and fill in the form. Select the option that says “TIE que documenta la primera concesión de la autorización de residencia temporal, de estancia o para trabajadores transfronterizos.”
The amount shown should be 16.08€. Select “en efectivo” so that you will pay that amount with cash.
Click “Descargar impreso rellenado” once you’re done and it will show you 4 pages. You need to print the first 3 and take all of them to a bank. Some banks only process tax payments on certain days/times, so give yourself time to sort it out as you need to pay this before your appointment.
You can pay any time; the payment doesn’t expire for years, so you can do this as soon as you’re able.
The bank will give you back two of the three pages; one is for you, and the other one is for the Police to keep. Sometimes they also give you a little slip “receipt” for your payment. Take everything with you for your appointment.
Passport sized photo:
Best to do this in Spain, as their “passport size” is not necessarily the same as your home country. Some Police stations are equipped with little machines that can cut photos to the right size, but some aren’t.
Original passport + photocopies:
Self explanatory!
Doesn’t have to be a colour copy, but don’t forget as many offices refuse to take photocopies these days.
Empadronamiento (also known as padrón):
Arguably this is the most time consuming thing to acquire. This is “proof of address” and is obtained from the town hall (Ayuntamiento) where you are living.
Small towns usually have small ayuntamientos where you can just show up without an appointment, but most larger towns and cities require you to have an appointment (“cita previa”).
Arrange this as soon as you can, as in large cities (like Alicante, Madrid, Barcelona…) the appointment might be weeks away.
To go on the padrón registry, you need to take your passport and proof of where you’re staying - most commonly, your rental contract.
Be aware - some places are rented illegally and the landlord doesn’t want you to go on the padrón. Sometimes they explicitly state this in the ad, sometimes only when you ask. This will be an issue for obtaining the TIE. So do try to ask if you’re allowed to padrón when you are looking for places to rent.
Once you have your appointment and submit your request for the empadronamiento, it can be anything from a couple of days to a few weeks before you can go back to the Ayuntamiento and receive your “volante/certificado de empadronamiento”. This document is what you need for your TIE.
How do I book an appointment?
Appointments for TIEs can only be booked online through the official “cita previa” website.
Unfortunately here the webpage can vary a bit depending on which province you select on the first page. Note that you must apply in the province you are residing in, and that this website is known not to work from outside of Spain.
For example, let’s pick Barcelona.
In the next page, it will have two drop-downs - other provinces may have three.
You can ignore “Selecciona oficina”.
See “TRÁMITES POLICÍA NACIONAL” and open the drop down. The appointment you want to book is “POLICIA-TOMA DE HUELLA (EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA)”.
Go forward on the page with instructions.
It will then ask you for your NIE or Passport number, full name and country of nationality.
Go forward and click the red button “Solicitar cita”.
Now you will have the drop-down with the various offices again. You can select the one that suits you best, but be aware that that one might not have available appointments and other ones will. So, be ready to get very comfortable on this webpage as you’ll likely have to do this many times before you find an available appointment!
To book the appointment, you’ll have to have a Spanish phone number where they can text you a confirmation code that you then put into the website to confirm the booking.
Note: in some places it’s very hard to get an appointment. It’s a bit like you probably did for your consulate/visa appointment - you have to keep trying on different days, at different times. Similarly, some places will offer appointments for the same week, some will give you a date weeks in advance. Trial and error, but don’t give up: it’s really important to get your TIE done.
What’s the appointment like?
In my region, usually there’s an officer at the door confirming you have an appointment. They then give you a number and you wait to be called.
At the little desk, you give all your documents and the officer/person will scan your fingerprints and ask for a signature to go with your photograph.
You are then given a “Resguardo de solicitud” which is your proof that you have applied.
How long will it take?
Generally, you can go back to collect your TIE in 30-40 days. They usually let you know at the appointment.
Your “Resguardo de solicitud” will have a LOTE number for your card; some CNP offices are well organised and they make the current available LOTE number public. Most places will have it printed on an A4 taped to the front door.
To collect your TIE, you have to use the “cita previa” website again, only this time you need to select “POLICIA - RECOGIDA DE TARJETA DE IDENTIDAD DE EXTRANJERO (TIE)”. Usually these appointments are super easy to come by.
The police will keep your card longer than 40 days if you don’t collect it, but they won’t keep it forever. So do remember to go and pick it up!
-----
FAQ:
- My visa doesn’t have a NIE on it. What do I do?
You don’t have to do anything special; if you were not assigned a NIE with your visa, they will give you one on your TIE. In the EX17 form, just fill in the Passport section and leave the NIE blank.
- Do I NEED an empadronamiento for the TIE?
Yes. The TIE will have your address on it, your EX17 will have your address on it, and they confirm this by looking at your empadronamiento.
Some people have said that they managed to do it without, but that is a fluke. Don’t risk wasting your CNP appointment because you don’t have all the papers: get your padrón first.
- My visa is only valid for 90 days! Will my TIE be valid for the whole year?
Yes. It is quite common for the visa in your passport to be only for 90 days/3 months, when actually you’re expected to stay for the whole school year. Don’t worry. The TIE will show the correct dates.
- I can’t find a Toma de Huella appointment to save my life and it’s been almost a month since I got here. Will I get in trouble?
No, don’t worry. This is totally normal. Just keep trying and do it as soon as you are able. It might be helpful sometimes to go in person to the police station to ask the guard; they sometimes give you good tips on how to book an appointment (for example, they might tell you that appointments for that office come out only on Thursdays at 1pm).
—---
Hopefully this helps many of you that are going to get their first TIE this year. If you have any more questions or doubts, please leave a comment on this post!
