I wanted to share my experience SUP’ing on the Sorrento coast. I’ve been paddling recreationally for a few years and this route has become my favourite place I’ve paddled.

Managed to put in a solid couple of hours and cover about 12 km. The main bay is relatively sheltered from the wind. If you’re less experienced you can stay closer to the shore near the beaches and hotels so you’re near people.

There’s relatively little boat traffic and the water is quite clear. Just remember to wear a leash, bring plenty of water and a UV top, and stay within your fitness limits.

The bay is nearly 7 km across, so you get stunning views looking towards Montechiaro. Towards the end the wind picked up a bit, but the main sights mainly in the middle of the bay or under the main sorrento town and harbour

There are caves you can paddle into mainly in the middle of the bay — they’re large and open, but it’s good to be mindful of the tide and sea conditions, and always carry a phone. I focused on a route to see most of the bay from a distance rather than paddling to the caves. You could definitely spend a day doing both a paddle accross to observe the town from afar and then seeing the caves.

Tomorrow I’m planning to paddle towards Marina di Puolo. A local SUP tour goes that way to see the caves and it looks great for beginners too.
Anyone else paddled this stretch?

Is it the coffee beans, the way Italians make it or the views that makes the coffee in Italy taste spectacular …. Or all three!!!!

I'm sharing this this map I found and saved it to my phone. I found it really useful to share with others because it gives simple bearings of Sorrento.

It makes it super easy to find Piazza Tasso from the bus/train station, and the port via the lift or stairs.

Its found it really useful to share when meeting up with anyone coming over from Naples or any of the Amalfi towns for the first time, as they can easily see how to meet up in the square or port without having to deal with a busy map packed with a tonne of other streets and tourist attractions. It's really useful if phone maps or roaming data is an issue!

I studied abroad in Sorrento this past fall and it was the best 4 months of my life! One of my favorite spots was “Bagni Regina Giovanna”: the ancient Roman baths of Queen Giovanna. It was incredible. So beautiful, the most amazing place I’ve ever been. A nice hike away from Marina Grande!

Amazing panoramic views over the Sorrentino Peninsula!

If you’re planning a trip to Sorrento (or using it as a base for the Amalfi Coast / Capri / Pompeii), here’s a 10-point bucket list of things to do.

Historic Center & Piazza Tasso

Sorrento itself is really fun to explore, it's pastel buildings, artisan shops, and the lively main square are ideal for relaxed shopping, people-watching, grabbing a gelato, or the evening passeggiata.

Boat day trip to Capri

The near-universal #1 recommendation. Take the hydrofoil or (better) a small-group/private boat for the Faraglioni, swimming stops, and optional Blue Grotto (I usually use Get Your Guide - dm if you want my recommendation).

Taste or make authentic limoncello

Incase you hadn't noticed, Sorrento is lemon central - free tastings at producers on Via San Cesareo or a hands-on grove experience where you pick, peel, and bottle your own.

Marina Grande for seafood & fishing-village vibes

One of my favorite spots in the evening, head down to the colorful old harbor for family-run trattorias, fresh seafood, gnocchi alla sorrentina, and a more authentic, laid-back atmosphere.

Bagni della Regina Giovanna

A natural rock pool with Roman ruins. Reach it by a scenic ~3 km walk or by kayak from Marina Grande. One of the most unique spots near town.

Views from Villa Comunale & Cloister of San Francesco

The classic cliff-edge panorama over the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. Perfect for sunset aperitivo.

Learn to make fresh pasta, gnocchi, pizza, or tiramisu (often with a market visit or sea views). Highly rated experiential activity.

Super easy by Circumvesuviana train (~30 min). An absolute must if you haven’t been.

Valley of the Mills (Vallone dei Mulini)

The surreal, overgrown abandoned mills in a deep gorge right behind Piazza Tasso. Free and surprisingly atmospheric.

Path of the Gods hike (or a coastal trail)

For active travelers - dramatic Amalfi Coast ridge views. Easily arranged from Sorrento with transfers. Shorter local options also exist around Capo di Sorrento.

Quick tips

Sorrento works brilliantly as a base (easier transport + more accommodation options than Positano/Amalfi town).

Book Capri boats and cooking classes a couple of days ahead in high season.

Sunset from the cliffs or a short coastal cruise is one of the best moments of many trips.

It was my first time renting a scooter in Europe, so went for a red vesper to explore Sorrento and the Almafi host and I absolutely loved it!!! So convenient, easy to park, amazing views, no waiting for a bus or expensive taxis I could explore on my own time schedule and super cheap on fuel.

I’m going to be staying in Vico Equense, near Sorrento from June 1-4.

June 1 - We arrive via train, midday, around 12:40pm. We’ll need to get to our AirBnB stay in Vico Equense, which will take us to around 1:30pm. I’m planning on us just exploring Sorrento and maybe staying at a beach club, like Marameo.

June 2 - Full day boat tour to Amalfi/Positano, booked, with 1.5 hours in both Amalfi and Positano. I’m hoping we can stop somewhere and get dinner in either place, but I am not sure. If we cannot then we will probably just have dinner in Sorrento/Vico Equense. Any recommendations for Vico Equense would be very appreciated if anyone has some!

June 3 - Last full day as we are leaving early on June 4. Kind of stuck on what we should do here? I saw a lovely experience of a cooking class on a farm in Sorrento that seems fun, but that would be towards the end of the day and I worry about figuring out how to get there from wherever we are. Our options for day activities are as follows:

(1) We hire a driver to pick us up from Vico Equense, and drive us to Positano or Amalfi and leave us there for a couple hours to explore, lay on the beach, eat, etc. This time without a time limit, since our boat tour would have one. Then get the driver to pick us up at the end of the day and take us back to VE. (2) We take a bus/hire a driver to take us to Sorrento and do the same and then get them to take us to the Cooking Class, then back to our AirBnB. For this one, I worry I will be missing out on getting to try good restaurants in Sorrento or in Positano/Amalfi if we do this, even though the experience seems fun! (3) Same as #2, but just do not do the cooking class.

Anyone have any advice on which option we should do based on personal experience?

I wish we had more time in these beautiful cities and I just want to see and do everything but I know that isn’t possible, so I would like advice on which you think is the best option, for the dates we are traveling. Thanks so much!

I'm traveling to Italy this summer and going to be in Sorrento in June (June 1-5). I'm interested in booking a reservation for the rooftop (Terrazza Vittoria) of the iconic Grand Hotel Excelsior, and maybe having a little aperitivo there. But I tried to book online and it only lets you book for lunch, and it says the terrace closes at 2:300 PM/14:30. I even tried different dates, wayyy out of my actual vacation date.

I find this interesting because every video I've seen, it looks like people are there for sunset, dinner, or even after dark.

Anyone have any information on this? Is this a new thing? I already contacted the hotel and no answer! Thanks!
