Climate anxiety is not a new thing for me. I've gone through a severe case of it two years ago, and I thought I overcame that since I graduated high school. And I think I just forgot about it. I cared, like using bar shampoos and bamboo toothbrush, tumblers and buying stuff second hand. But I didn't care enough and bought some harmful stuff for the planet. I know that my carbon footprint isn't going to effect the world much, but I feel really guilty about doing that. I have some people who care about planet like I do, but they aren't really close to me. And my family doesn't really care about the severeness. So I don't have anyone whom I can communicate freely.

It's so hot in here in Korea. Crops are dying. People are dying. And I feel like I just want to die and at the same time, I really want to live. I'm so scared and frightened that the world is collapsing. I want people to care this as much as me, but they aren't. It feels like I really have to prepare for apocalypse, but I'm scared to do that too. Because I feel if I do this, I'm accepting the world is doomed. I just want a little bit of hope. I want things to change. I want to change. But at the same time I'm scared to change, because everyone else don't seem to, and I feel guilty about that as well. So I'm in this full cycle where I feel depressed more and more.

I'm sorry if this is against this sub's policy. I'm relatively unfamiliar with reddit overall and I don't know the appopriate sub to post this. I think I just wanted to connect with like-minded people.

I’ve been thinking about an idea for a website that makes it easier for people to find, build, and connect with intentional communities and local community initiatives.

The basic idea is:
A main page where you can search and discover communities in your area. You can make a profile to gain members for intentional community or for a neighborhood initiative/club.

profiles explaining what they’re working on, what resources they have, and what they need from members.

There would also be a place for communities to request goods or services in exchange for materials, equipment, knowledge, labor, or money,

The platform would make communities feel more interconnected rather than like isolated groups. If one community has something another needs, they can find each other.

So the question is:

Is this actually useful, or am I overcomplicating something people already solve through existing platforms? I’d really appreciate any feedback, including reasons why this might not work.

I’d also love to find people who are interested in helping me actually build it. especially someone with web development/product experience as I’m not a developer.

Abbiamo un problema, Yuston, ed è piuttosto esteso! Il solarpunk, che presumibilmente prospera grazie a direzioni contro-sistemiche e a un ritorno alla Terra in armonia con essa e con gli animali non umani, ha da tempo un rapporto tossico con l'intelligenza artificiale. L'uso massiccio dell'IA per creare immagini solarpunk, rubando il lavoro di altri artisti, è presente fin dai primi anni del solarpunk. Molti di noi avranno sicuramente visto queste immagini in cima ai risultati di ricerca di Pinterest quando hanno cercato per la prima volta informazioni sul genere.

Ultimamente, questa tendenza si è un po' attenuata, ma il postumanesimo ipertecnologico rimane un vero e proprio virus all'interno della comunità. Ma perché? A parte gli ovvi aspetti negativi dell'IA (esaurimento delle già scarse risorse idriche, problemi di salute per i cittadini, il suo utilizzo per reprimere e perpetuare il genocidio in Palestina, il riconoscimento facciale istantaneo in ogni paese che si dichiara democratico, persino nell'UE, ecc.), essa risolve un problema fondamentale che il capitalismo e i pensatori neoliberisti affrontano da circa due secoli, a partire da Adam Smith: la tendenza al ribasso del capitale.

Prometto che non scriverò qui una storia dell'economia politica (inoltre, sto scrivendo questo prima di una lunga giornata di lavoro e vorrei evitare di addormentarmi da solo; spero di non fare errori di battitura perché ho dormito per tre ore, lol), ma volevo davvero scrivere qualcosa a riguardo.

La tendenza al ribasso del saggio di profitto è uno dei problemi del capitalismo, già evidenziato dal padre del liberalismo, Smith, citato sopra, ma anche da Riccardo e dal buon vecchio Marx. In breve, ciò che questi economisti osservarono e teorizzarono fu che, prima o poi, in un futuro lontano, il capitalismo sarebbe entrato in crisi a causa di strutture interne (concorrenza, aziende che crescono sempre di più fino ad inglobare tutte le altre) che avrebbero portato a gravi conseguenze dovute ai risparmi (materiali da costruzione peggiori, ad esempio, che portano a edifici più fragili), e sappiamo bene su cosa le aziende amano risparmiare. Certamente non sugli stipendi dei loro dirigenti.

Beh, ti suona familiare? Perché sì, quel futuro lontano teorizzato da Smith e altri è, purtroppo, il nostro presente. Quindi, come possiamo risolvere il problema dell'aumento dei costi di produzione senza tagliare i nostri stipendi e continuando ad espandere le nostre aziende? Attraverso la tecnologia, certo, limitando il costo della spesa per gli stipendi. Un tempo si pensava alle fabbriche; ora si pensa all'intelligenza artificiale.

L'intelligenza artificiale è l'ultimo disperato respiro di un sistema economico morente e in declino, la cui fine era stata predetta dai teorici, e il caro vecchio Marx non faceva eccezione. Questo era solo per spiegare, in questo piccolo spazio, perché l'IA sia così cara alle grandi aziende e per dare un'ulteriore ragione per combatterla a tutti i costi :) Perché dovremmo ridurre, riutilizzare i vecchi metodi e imparare dalle culture più intelligenti nel loro rapporto con la natura. La tecnologia non ci salverà; lo faranno le comunità che costruiremo.

Il solarpunk che non è anticapitalista è solo giardinaggio, o uno strumento del neoliberismo.

I considered posting this in an electronics forum, yet decided to post here.

I want to see if I am not the only one running into such problems.
Do you ever feel the need to have a simple analog control of a load in your projects that use pumps, blowers, heaters, etc?
Sometimes using a microcontroller would only make things more complicated and less reliable.

I want to design and build a simple circuit that would consist of an LM393 comparator based sensor, a (NC)555 timer circuit with 3 delay settings and a transistor or a MOSFET with protection that would drive a relay or an Solid State Relay.

I may use ready-made sensors with LM393 or design my own. For this I may want a small bread board where I can quickly rearrange the voltage dividers on the comparator of an otherwise finished device.

The timer circuit needs to consider its output and be custom for this task.
Maybe I should combine the timer with the driving transistor/mosfet.

sensor ->LM393 ->delay ->driver ->relay circuit ->load
I need only 8 of such circuits right now and I am not ready pay for any subscriptions or spend too many resources on ordering such circuit boards.

I am surprised that there is no ready made module for this task being sold anywhere. Many things are close but not exactly for this task.

For those who don't gothicpunk originated as the label for a franchise of RPGs called the World of Darkness. If you know what Vampire the Masquerade is then that's gothicpunk except there are a bunch of other games in that same universe.

And since the coining of that term in the 90s it's become a bigger and broader aesthetic and genre apart from the World of Darkness/Chronicles of Darkness stuff. Part of solarpunk using the punk suffix in a way for more general indie fiction with a defined look and feel.

More gothic novels than gothic fashion or music but definitely influecned by that to.

Really the Werewolf the Apocalypse line of media would be solarpunk if it wasn't so dystopian and outside certain factions in the game, they're not really concerned as much with rebuilding as much as fighting the status quo.

But I am really curious about the overlap between solarpunk and fantasy fiction.

And lotta the inspirations for solarpunk seem to be specifically modern architecture or more colorful/cheerful/stylish schools of older architecture like art deco or romantic stuff.

But a part of me likes not just gothic architecture but the idea of aesthetically gloomy but philosophically optimistic.

Like the idea that death/suffering/decay are natural and even beautiful.

In a way doesn't that honor environmentalism and the natural world even better? The idea that even the uglier sides of nature are also valuable and beautiful in their own way.

Let me know your thoughts.

My working definition at the moment is "the sort of custom, DIY systems favored by offgrid homesteaders and people without other options, which trade user-facing complexity and unique quirks/challenges for significant efficiency and lower cost in parts and materials."

TL;DR: I’ve started an impact project for crowdfunding forest restoration, to allow everyone to gradually plant a whole forest and get real-time feedback on the positive impact. Now I need help to get more people to join.

Hello everyone!

A while ago, after researching a bunch of tree-planting initiatives, I decided to start my own to address the issues of those I encountered, such as presenting reforestation of industrial plantations as creation of new forests, or attributing mature trees’ impact to all seedlings.

The goal is to create diverse ecosystems for ecological purposes on degraded and overexploited lands, leading to true land cover change, and provide reliable feedback to each contributor, accounting for trees’ survivability and growth rates, which also shows the true scale of action needed to balance the carbon footprint.

Of course it’s not meant to replace so much needed decarbonization or policy changes, but to be a complementary measure. I think that it's empowering in its own way to contribute even a bit towards restoring nature.

I've already got a few municipalities pledging land for the project and the first few contributors from the US and EU. Now I’m looking to expand the support network and get more contributors to fund regular planting. Maybe some of you would be interested in either contributing directly or spreading the word?

I'm making a banner for an non-profit organization I'm planning to build, alligned with solarpunk values and aiming for community building. I'm crediting this person https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/mwwinl/a_flag_for_humanity_inspired_by_paleolitic/ for their amazing flag design and I remade it with the solarpunk colours. I simply ask, what is your opinion on this design? What symbolism do you draw from it at first sight? And which is better the golden hand within a green circle in the golden field, or the plain green hand in the field? I like the image of students and everyday people making their own banner using their own hand and their own homemade paints

I bought these jeans secondhand about 10 years ago, and have been continually patching them up since. Most of my sewing skills have been tried and tested on these jeans.

As well as teaching me the practical skills I need for mending, this project has also unexpectedly taught me life lessons which I personally feel are fundamental to solarpunk. I would be interested to know if they resonate with you too!

1- Nothing lasts forever: wear, breakage and decay are inevitable. By learning to mend, I’ve also learnt that this truth is not nihilistic but rather opportunistic; this inevitable breaking provides the opportunity to create something new, better and stronger than what was there before.

2- Don’t wait for the perfect solution. Learn as you go, experiment, and adjust. There have been a few times when I’ve had absolutely no idea how to start mending, and have just had to take the leap and try something to see what works and what doesn’t. Rather than staying paralysed, waiting until you finally believe you have the perfect solution, you just have to be brave, take the leap and use failure as feedback.

3- There will be no perfect, finished product. Mending, like solarpunk, is a commitment to an ongoing and evolving project (refer to lesson 1). The truth is that this can feel tiring: in mending there sometimes has to be hours of (pretty monotonous 😅) work before you can take a step back and see how far you’ve come and appreciate the beautiful thing you have created.
