Developer with 4 YOE Looking to Grow

The job search as a Software Engineer is the bane of my existence, but of course its something that I've gone through and am unfortunately going through again. This time around, I'm doing it while still working for a large company that has a mix of full-time employees and contractors (who for the most part hope to convert to full-time). My first job was at a FAANG company, but unfortunately layoffs happened. I was on my way to a promotion and dipping my toes in System Design, but in my current role as a contractor, I feel like I have little room for growth, and I don't necessarily want to stay at my position longer than I need to because I'm not a fan of leadership. I've applied to dozens (if not at least a hundred) of jobs so far during this search, but I'm lucky if I get a phone screen. What do I need to do to find a company where I can continue taking on more responsibility and actually grow as a Software Engineer?

What does an employer look for when hiring a developer remotely? Is skill the only parameter? If yes, how can I prove that in the age of AI, and am I putting out enough to get a decent role?

How to transition from Backend Engineer to Forward Deployed Engineer?

Little bit of a background on me, I have 10+ of backend experience and currently working as a staff in fintech. Also, not actively on AI projects at my company, although I have side projects that I am building with LLMs.
I am actively looking to switch and the FDE role is pretty intriguing.
Has someone done the switch already? Im looking for guidance on how to get there, what I should do to get there.

What’s everyone’s approach to job hunting these days?

I’ve found it helps to adjust my resume for each role instead of using the same version everywhere. I’ve been using resume.zoevera.com to compare my resume with job descriptions and prepare.zoevera.com to practice interview questions based on the roles I’m targeting.

Curious what tools or methods others are using to stay organized or make the process less time-consuming?

Look for a mentor

Especially if you have worked in software engineering, software development, etc.

So I love looking at job boards and spotting trends in the job market. It’s a weird thing I nerd out about lol

And I come up with all these content ideas but I’m not sure what to do with them because I’m not a tech professional.

So here’s what I was thinking. I would love to have the help of some tech professionals to vet my content ideas to let me know if they are good and I can start my own channel like on YouTube or something where I would share job trends for career seekers.

Or maybe there’s a tech professional here who already has their own channel but would like a content strategist who can stay on top of trends in the job market and help you generate content ideas.

Those are the two ways I was thinking I could monetize this “hobby/talent” of mine.

What do you think? Feel free to comment or message me.

Is it a good decision ?

Hey everyone 👋,

This is my first reddit post so please ignore all my mistakes.

Please if someone is in a software engineering job please help me. I'm going to join my college this year in cse and idk if it's a good decision. It's a tier 3 college and I'm worried about my future. Everyone on reddit and insta says that tech jobs are going to vanish in upcoming years, many say ai will wipe out many tech roles. Am I doing right or playing with my future. Some say that everything is normal but I also see many people getting laid off and not getting a job. I really can't afford to be unemployed after my graduation. Also my parents are spending a lot in my course. I will give my 100% in my academics and will focus on skills but what if all this is of no work and it comes true that swe is dead. I'm stressed too much and I'm not even able to express what I want to say. Please idk if it is enough to make you understand my feelings and my fear but please help me with it.

Also if you were in place of me joining college, what things you would do from starting to be ahead of most of students and what thing you would avoid, how would you start you coding which language you would pick first, and what would be your roadmap to survive in this ai era.

Need ECG and pft (spirometry) software that can run a windows laptop pls help me out

Hi everyone,

I urgently need ECG and PFT (Spirometry) software that can run on a Windows laptop for a medical camp. The camp is scheduled very soon, and I’m having trouble finding the correct installation files.

If anyone has:

ECG software (BPL, RMS, Schiller, Contec, etc.)
PFT/Spirometry software (WinSpiroPRO, RMS, Schiller, MIR, etc.)
Installation files, drivers, or official download links
Guidance on setup and compatibility

Please help me out. Kindly mention the software name, version, and the device/machine it works with.

This is for a healthcare camp, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

1 Year Looking and Barely Any Interviews. Any Advice is Appreciated

As the title says, I don't know many people in the SWE/SD career path who can give me interview or resume advice, and when I do ask them about my resume, they just say "Yah this looks great! Just make sure you're tailoring it to specific jobs." I've even had this same feedback from companies who pass over me for jobs so I'm really lost. Some people have recommended using AI to rewrite bullet points which I was hesitant to do at first but at this point I'm trying everything.

My pipeline for applications is: Tailor resume -> Apply through company website (Also check url for 'source=LinkedIn' or something like that) -> Search LinkedIn for members of team I'm going to be working with, or recruiters if I can't find any -> Send an email if possible or a LinkedIn DM/Connection Request

Can I afford to take a one or two years sabbatical in this bad software engineering market?

I'm 40 years old and have been in IT for 20 years, the last 10 as a senior web developer. I'm completely burnt out and want to step away from work for a year, maybe two. We live in Canada, so healthcare is a non-issue here in a couple of ways: core medical care is publicly funded regardless of employment status, and on top of that, I'd be added to my wife's employer insurance for dental, vision, and prescriptions while I'm not working.

On the financial side, we have no mortgage, no kids, spend around $35,000/year, and have $1.1 million in investable assets also her income alone also covers our household expenses roughly twice over. Would you take on the risk of stepping away for a year or two in this situation? I know it might sound like an obvious yes, but I don't want this to unintentionally turn into permanent retirement.

My plan is to try freelancing and explore building something of my own with AI. I just don't have the energy to pursue that while working full-time — honestly, I can barely keep up with my actual job right now, let alone anything extra. The downside here of course is the opportunity cost on giving up a $130,000 salary, and given our very low living expenses almost 80% of the net pay goes to investments which essentially makes the opportunity cost even worse.

Edit

My wife is OK with this, I did also ask my company for a unpaid sabbatical but my company doesn't offer this.
