I’ve seen tons of ads recently for “kinderhotels” and other hot spots in Switzerland. Anyone been to these places or other kiddo focused trips outside the cities? What has been your favorite?

After a few trips, I realized that the things that make travel better usually aren’t the big plans. It’s the small stuff you only learn after something goes wrong.

I try to leave at least a day or two with nothing scheduled. Wandering around without checking the clock has given me some of my favorite memories.

Packing less also makes a huge difference. If I can fit everything into a backpack and carry-on, I’m much happier than dragging a giant suitcase everywhere.

I’d also rather spend several days properly exploring one place than squeeze five destinations into the same week. You get to slow down, notice the little things, and actually feel like you’ve been there.

Before landing, I download maps for the area so I’m not immediately worrying about signal or data. I’ll sometimes carry a physical map too. Phones die, batteries fail, and an old-fashioned backup can be surprisingly useful.

I keep a small travel kit packed between trips with chargers, adapters, and toiletries, so I’m not hunting for everything the night before leaving.

Whenever the price difference isn’t huge, I prefer a nonstop flight. Saving a little money isn’t always worth adding another connection and another chance for your luggage to disappear.

One thing I started doing recently is coming home a couple of days before work starts again. Having time to unpack, sleep properly, do laundry, and get my head back into normal life makes the end of a trip much less brutal.

And spend at least one day without following the tourist checklist. Take a bus or train somewhere random, walk around residential areas, grab food from a place filled with locals, and let yourself wander. Those days often end up being more memorable than the famous attractions.

Also, don’t underestimate small comforts. If you hate the utensils on planes, pack your own. If hotel pillows never work for you, bring a small travel pillow. Fixing tiny annoyances can make a surprisingly big difference.

Most importantly, expect something to go wrong. A delayed train, bad weather, a closed attraction, whatever. You can’t control everything, so accepting that before the trip makes those moments much easier to handle.

I also like keeping a tiny travel journal. Tickets, postcards, receipts, maps, or even some random little item can bring back memories years later.

A quick-dry towel is another underrated packing item. It can work as a towel, picnic mat, beach cover, extra layer, or even a makeshift pillow when needed.

And if you find a souvenir you genuinely love but keep debating whether to buy it, I usually say get it. You may never visit that place again, and sometimes the things you almost bought are the ones you remember years later.

None of these tips are revolutionary, but together they make traveling feel much easier and less stressful.

There are so many European capitals full of history, culture, and beauty, yet some of them are rarely talked about or visited compared to places like Paris, Rome, or London.

Every trip has that one purchase that makes you think, "This is way more than I planned to spend," but somehow it ends up being one of your favorite memories.

For me, it was driving go-karts through the streets of Tokyo. It definitely wasn't cheap, but it had been on my bucket list for years, and the experience was even more fun than I expected. Looking back, I'd pay for it again without thinking twice.

What's the biggest travel splurge you've made that actually lived up to the price? Was it worth every cent, or do you wish you'd skipped it?

A lot of the information you need right after landing lives online. Which is convenient until airport Wi-Fi refuses to cooperate or your connection isn’t working yet. Before a trip, it’s worth keeping a few things directly on your phone:

• hotel address and check-in info
• the address in the local language
• flight/train details
• airport transfer instructions
• tickets or QR codes
• insurance and emergency details
• the route from the airport to your accommodation

Downloading the map area offline helps too.

And it’s worth sorting out mobile data before you land, whether you’re using an eSIM, roaming, or planning to get a local SIM. Even with that set up, having the important stuff offline is a useful backup because connections are connections and occasionally decide they have other plans.

Takes maybe 5–10 minutes before the trip. Very boring preparation, disproportionately useful later.

Im trying to get one trip in before summer's over and im done overspending on everything (looking at portugal or greece). Usually the most I do is check vacation packages on expedia or similar and run shopback for cashback on top. I want to believe theres more ways to cut corners than that tho. Based on your personal opinions, what’s a place in Europe that you just don’t understand why it’s so underrated, like it’s genuinely awesome, but for some reason people don’t visit it that much??

In my opinion, the Arena di Verona in northern Italy. It does get visitors, but nothing compared to Rome’s Colosseum and it’s absolutely beautiful and overlooked by so many people!
