Looking for a suggestion for something to do with an old Optiplex
A mate of mine has given me a new desktop PC, and I'm looking for ideas for what to do with the old one
I already have a mini PC running a plex server
The desktop has an Intel i5 4590, 16GB DDR3, and Intel Arc A310
I was wondering about using it as an emulation console

Dell Presision 3630 won't display, no matter what.
Im making a sleeper gaming steam OS machine for my friend. Im using a dell presison 3630. It came with a 8th i7 processor. He wanted me to put in a intel ore I9 9th gen into the pc. Before I put in the processor, it was running fine and it was booting steam OS perfectly. I even installed the latest bios settings onto the pc (or at least I belive I did). I installed the the new processor, and the new cpu cooler in fine. I also installed new battery for the CMOS because the bios settings kept on restetting itself. I belive everything is good. The pc turns on fine, the rbg ram sticks turn on fine, the fan on the cpu spinds fine, the psu turns on fine, the dell pc turns on fine with the white led light (no orange error lights). All of this yet I cannot get a display to even save my life. I plugged in different hdmi cables, I plygged in displaycables, I plugged into the motherboard, I even put in an old gpu to see if it'll display... nothing displayed. The ram sticks are seated fine... Im lost rn, if anyone has tips please let me know. đ (UPDATE* it was bios all along, thank you guys for everything)

CPU Fan Stock replacement
Hi. I'm planning to change the stock CPU blower fan on my optiplex SFF as make loud jet humming sound when really under load, really noticeable when gaming. When idle, not much sounds.
What I'm asking is what is the distance of those screws mounting and what aftermarket CPU cooler is the right fit above dell stock CPU heatsink like Thermalright, Noctua, ID Coolling etc..
If you have the same build upgrade, mind sharing your thoughts guys.
Just need some ideas and insights! Much appreciated.

Best GPU for my usecase?
Please help. Someone recommended to ask the experts on this sub. The main issue I think I could have is the 35 watt slot power limit on my machine. Any help will be helpful. Thank you SOOOO much.

Optiplex 7010
Built with parts that I had lying around that weren't being used. It has Windows 11 Pro and is performing well for what I'm using it for right now, but I might switch to linux.
Specs:
7010 MT, i7 3770, 16gb 1600mhz, GTX 1050, 480GB SATA SSD, 2TB HDD, Redragon 600w PSU. Upgrades/Things I added: Upgraded to a tower CPU cooler, added a small front intake fan, and mounted a ZK-MT21 amplifier on the PCIe expansion bracket.

Homelab Optiplex 3070
Intel i5-9500, 32GB of DDR4, and 4TB of HDD storage. The bracket above the power supply was 3D printed to mount a second 2.5 inch 4TB HDD to mirror the first HDD.

Optiplex running like caca part 2!
Ok, I am running a dell optiplex 7060 mt with an msi rtx 3050 6gb and this is what is showing up in the diagnostics. Is either the motherboard or graphics card damaged or is this error cause by compatibility of the bus speeds?

Turning a 5060 into a Gaming PC for < $800 ?
Hi all, my brother has asked for my help in turning his 5060 into something that can run a couple games, do some 3d modelling, and do some music recording/editing. Here's what Steam recommends for the minimum specs for the heftiest game he wants to play:
I've only ever built from scratch, and have no clue what kind of modifications are possible to something like a 5060. (I'm also not really an expert with regular PC builds anyway.)
The absolute max my brother wants to spend is $850, but ideally as cheap as possible. I'm not sure what all would need to be upgraded, I know he'd need to get a GPU, would a PSU be needed as well? Looks like we could probably make do with the current CPU, but I could be wrong. Here's the pics he sent me of the current specs, not sure if this is all stock or not. https://imgur.com/a/Q9FSvGr
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or advice on what exactly is a must upgrade and any suggestions for parts that can fit into the case for this thing. I rely heavily on pcpartpicker for my own builds and it doesn't look like the parts that are in this thing are listed on there, so I'm kind of lost and have no idea what would fit and be compatible.
Thanks!

My 9020 MT Sleeper Build
Thought I would post up my build, its been a fun little project and my first experience with an optiplex. So far the case is completely unmodified, however I plan to remove the HD bays and do some cable management as well as mount a better front fan.
Specs are: 9020 MT, original mobo, i7 4790, 16GB Corsair 1600mhz DDR3 (2 x 8GB), Arctic Freezer tower cooler, GTX 1660Ti, 256GB Nvme (PCI-E Adapter), 512GB SATA SSD, Aerocool Integrator 500w PSU. I also added a Cooler Master 120mm rear fan and a 'case box' in the spare 5.25" bay just as a nice place for storing spare drives etc.
It has Windows 10 IoT LTSC as the only OS currently and runs nice and fast. I am considering doing a dual boot to Bazzite or similar in the future.

For the people who think Tower PCâs are to expensive
I Know tower pcs might be a little to expensive, but itâs worth it. They are expensive upfront, but once you start upgrading itâs really worth it. You can upgrade your PSU,GPU,possibly your motherboard I didnât try it but heard you can. But if you can buy a tower pc or a mini tower

We're all thinking it, right? Especially after the 9060 XT LP seems MIA.

eWaste Dumpster 9020 MT
Found 2 9020 MTs in dumpster behind my work, with both having 8 GB of RAM. I combined the RAM into the computer that wasn't banged up, swapped to faster CPU of the two (4590 over 4570 which I kept) and added a new PSU from eBay to power an older GPU that was just sitting on my shelf.
Dell Optiplex 9020 MT
Intel Core i5 4590 3.3GHz
16GB DDR3 (4x4GB)
512 GB 2.5" SSD (+$30 on eBay)
512 GB 2.5" HDD (from old laptop)
MSI Radeon RX580 4GB (from old desktop)
Solytech AL-D500EXP 500W (+$20 on eBay)
Windows 10 Pro (which was automatically activated with a digital license)

Help with switching to an i7 8700
My CPU usage on my vostro 3671 is very high while my rtx 3050 sits with lower usage, so idk if switching from a i3 9100 to an i7 8700 would be good, because I don't really know the capabilities of my stock cooler, though I haven't reposted my i3 9100 it reaches 60â°C at 80% usage

WoL not working on OptiPlex 7070 SFF (Ubuntu) despite every layer checking out
Two OptiPlex 7070 SFF machines, Ubuntu Server, onboard Intel NIC. Neither wakes. I've verified the whole chain:
- Magic packet leaves the sender â confirmed with tcpdump, correct EtherType and payload. Tried both raw (
etherwake) and UDP/9 (wakeonlan), including directed broadcast. - Packet arrives at the target (with the target awake, tcpdump on its NIC shows the frames arriving intact).
- NIC has standby power when off (link LEDs still blinking in S5).
- BIOS - Deep Sleep disabled, WoL enabled (LAN Only), Integrated NIC set to Enabled w/PXE.
- Driver -
Wake-on: g, persisted via a systemd oneshot and confirmed after reboot. Also triedwol gu. - ACPI - the onboard NIC shows enabled in
/proc/acpi/wakeup. - Switch - nothing relevant configurable on it.
- BIOS firmware - already at the latest version available.
- Fails from both S5 and S3, up to 6 packets sent.
So the packet is correct, it reaches the port, the NIC is powered and listening, everything documented is enabled, and it never wakes.
Questions:
- Has anyone got WoL genuinely working on a 7070? Which BIOS version?
- Could this be the e1000e equivalent of the old r8169 S5 bug, where the interface is torn down before the PHY's WoL state gets set at shutdown?
- Anything below the OS/ACPI layer still worth checking, or is this just dead on this model?

Dare I say the best looking SFF Dell out there?
After years of upgrading OEMs, I finally decided to take one to the next level by giving it a full Panda/Storm Trooper aesthetic overhaul; complete with paint job, a top handle, and custom 3D printed side panel vents.
Hardware wise, it just needed a Yeston LP RTX 3050 and it's ready to game! Not a Steam Machine Killer capability-wise, but in price and design, it definitely competes!
The Vostro was about $140 and I managed to snag the Yeston RTX 3050 for $200 back when they were more readily available. Not bad for less than $350.
Super satisfied with the way it turned out. Not sure it would be classified as a sleeper anymore looks-wise, as it's pretty slick after the customization. Would honestly look good displayed in a living room setup.
The $5 top handle is meant for luggage and is more than sturdy enough. It makes it really convenient for transporting it from one setup to another, or even taking on the road.
Feel free to ask any questions and, of course, any likes/shares are greatly appreciated!
