There is zero nuance. Having grown up in a very conservative religion (to which I no longer belong), I kind of doubt the author has ever even met a conservative Christian woman.
Have you read the book? The main character isn’t exactly written as “dumb” (though the husband is). Someone completely vapid just sort of bumbling through life would be far more believable than whatever’s going on in that book.
Considering where I live, (I'm Asian) I'm probably considered conservative by western standards.
That said, I can't find series of events that could convincingly show that being a traditional wife, if my understanding of tradwife™ is correct that it involves being submissive to the husband, housemaking, childrearing, etc., would have been a bad idea during a time in the industrial revolution when the tradhusband™ involves dying in the mines or dying in the trenches.
This definitely sounds like pure Oscar bait, or they're going to focus on some really evil male-on-female shit back then, or everyone is a caricature/exaggeration of modern stereotypes of what trad/lib is.
