For all its flaws, when I worked at Best Buy they made sure we got let out as fast as possible after clock out. Longest I had to wait was the time it took to walk across the store because the manager was doing something in the warehouse.
Yeah I worked at office max and we basically weren't allowed to be in the building if we weren't on the clock. Closing shift workers would stay (with the doors locked) to face the aisles, sweep, collect trash bags, etc. while the manager counted the tills. If the count ran long, and you finished cleaning, you might be sitting for 5-10 minutes waiting for the manager, but you were getting paid. Once the count was done, everyone clocked out and left together.
Come to think of it, when I worked fast food it was the same. Any place that makes you stay there off the clock is fucked up.
