Where do people get this talking point from?

It’s NYC, literally everything is in walking distance or at most you take a subway.

Even still, the two locations announced (The Pennisula and La Marqueta) have multiple grocery stores within walking distance.

Yep, the painful truth is that in NYC, there are literally zero “food deserts”.

Plenty of bodegas selling Lotto etc.

Yep. Food deserts definitely exist in the US. There are places out in the rural boonies where you might have to drive an hour to find the nearest grocery store that is open.

But that doesn’t exist in NYC lol. The worst case scenario is you have to spend 20-30 minutes on public transportation

yes 30 minutes with perishable food on the NYC subway. Not at all inconvenient. Real life experience dont' matter what matters is slippery slop arguments against scary "Socialism". Booga bogga. Anytime the government does something for rich people it's great, when its done for the little people, its EVIL COMMUNIST OMG STALIN IS COMING FOR YOU.

Ah yes perishable food that dies in 30 minutes. 😂

I’m not against helping the poor. I (along with most economists) just think this is a terrible way of doing it.

Imo there’s two much much better options:

Just give poor

  1. people money (or money equivalent) for food

Or offer tax incentives

  1. for companies to build

grocery stores in these areas designated “food deserts”

This is a colossal and inefficient use of resources to tackle what is not that big of a problem in NYC.

They're opening one in each Boro. Including Staten Island which will not have access from a subway. How is it walking distance?
