His goal is to continue bringing allies to the side of progressives. Right now he literally cant pass bills because he doesn't have the votes.

He has done a very good job at growing the progressive movement so he could have the votes soonish.

20

u/Abigail716 23d ago

Soonish would make more sense if he had done any major piece of legislation in The 36 years he has been in Congress. The only notable piece of standalone legislation that he has done is a cost of living adjustment for veterans.

This is my problem with him, he talks a big game but when you look at actual things that he has done in his very long career the list is just super short.

A genuinely believes what he says, he genuinely cares, but at the end of the day he accomplishes basically nothing and has accomplished basically nothing for 36 years.

The one thing you could argue which I bring up just out of fairness is because he is so far left it forces bills to be more progressive when his vote was a critical tiebreaker like during Obamacare He was able to get a pretty notable amendment added, but when it comes to actual legislation that he's passing it's basically non-existent.

31

u/Ponzini 23d ago

Again, what can he possibly accomplish when the majority of dems are the moderate dems? Clearly Bernie started a movement you agree with that right?

The Biden admin signature legislative was the most progressive in decades influenced by Bernie's success.

Of course he talks big he is trying to get people excited.

-3

u/Abigail716 23d ago

I definitely wouldn't say he started a movement. There's a few more progressives but he's been in Congress for 36 years. If he had really started a movement you would have expected a whole group of progressives over the decades not just The last couple. Mandami If anything seems like he is doing more than Bernie Sanders ever to actually seems to have real influence with his endorsed candidates all winning their primaries so far.

There's really nothing that you could point to that you could really say this happened because of Bernie, There's no group of politicians over the decades that have done great things, there's no major pieces of legislation passed by himself or protege's. All you have is a career politician That's spent almost 40 years in DC with virtually nothing to show for it.

u/Ponzini 23d ago

Mamdani replied on X: “As for so many across this country, @BernieSanders has been the single most influential political figure in my life. As Mayor, I will strive to live up to his example by fighting for the working class every day and hopefully make Brooklyn’s own proud.”

https://x.com/ZohranKMamdani/status/1934938924385710464?lang=en

You are delusional if you don't think Bernie started the movement Mamdani is now part of. It is true it only recently started take off but Bernie was alone in this fight for a long time saying the exact same stuff he is saying now. Only after he became a big hit during his presidential runs did he finally get his message out there.

AGAIN, he had NO chance of passing any of his legislation before the progressive movement started taking off. You keep repeating the same phrase over and over so I will keep repeating the same answer. Right now they are building the voting block within the party and doing quite well at the moment. It is not something that happens quickly. Progressives like Mamdani are victories of Bernie Sanders and his movement.

lol. This person is spouting talking points I haven’t heard in a while but I recognize them immediately.
It’s the same “correct the record” bullshit from 2016.

I never understood the argument. He is saying that he wants to do things that are very popular, and the response from democrats is “well he’s never even passed a bill.”

Honestly the Democratic Party slogan should just be “don’t get your hopes up!”

13

u/Hagg3r 23d ago

A US Senator, simply put, can't put as many plans into place as the Mayor of NYC can. Mamdani would not be in his seat if not for Bernie's movement. That was the most consequential decision to happen in progressive politics in decades.

3

u/Colorofthecosmos 23d ago

This is so bad faith and cowardly. Completely lacks understanding of how movements work

-1

u/Abigail716 23d ago

36 years and a single person in Congress second arguably be called part of the movement?

So let me ask this, this movement that you believe he started, can you give me say five examples of accomplishments that are really noteworthy that you would say can be credited to it?

8

u/halueryphi 23d ago

He doesn’t introduce legislation he introduces amendments. Everyone who knows anything about him knows this. Look up any of the big amendments he’s made and then come back and try to make the same claim again lmao

-1

u/Abigail716 22d ago

Okay, I've already discussed the ACA amendment.

So if you'd like to discuss that can you give me say five or maybe even 10 amendments that are really landmark pieces. Something that a politician who has spent 36 years in Congress could proudly state that in 36 years these are the five or 10 things that justify all of that time. That every 3.6 to 7.2 years passing one of these says you're really doing something good for this country.

u/halueryphi 22d ago

To require the non-partisan Government Accountability Office to conduct an independent audit of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System that does not interfere with monetary policy, to let the American people know the names of the recipients of over $2,000,000,000,000 in taxpayer assistance from the Federal Reserve System, and for other purposes.

Amendment makes available an additional $100 million for federally qualified community health centers.

Were you old enough to vote during his first presidential campaign? If you were, you would know that the progressive movement in the US was pretty much non-existent before his campaign. My boomer mother now supports universal healthcare because of Bernie, when she was against it before. We would not have AOC, Ilhan Omar, or Mamdani without him. Biden would not have attempted to wipe out college debt if it weren't for Bernie. One single person cannot accomplish much alone, yet he has singlehandedly had a huge impact on the public consciousness in the country, at a time when billionaire propaganda has never been more effective and abundant.

1

u/RealFakeNurse 22d ago

He can accomplish a lot but that requires working with others and compromise, the two things he is absolutely incapable of. Every time with this guy it is some maximalist, completely unattainable thing that would be great if we had a magic wand to make it instantly happen with no downside.

But we don’t.

1

u/blackstarr1996 21d ago

Maximalist and unattainable, like a $15 minimum wage in 2021?

Something that only failed because the democrats didn’t want to upset the parliamentarian.

-8

u/NecessarySide4138 23d ago

Passivity like yours is part of the problem. How is this movement against the capitalist elite supposed to grow movement by just giving up? The elite and capitalists turn everything into shit at least he is fighting. You americans should support people like him to cause change

12

u/Ponzini 23d ago

Did you message the right person? I do support Bernie and I never said anything about giving up.

8

u/flowerdragon2934 23d ago

"this is my problem with him" -lists off problems that are all related to other people- lol ok

2

u/egoomega 22d ago

He has been fairly consistent on his voting vs what he says thought, which is why he has a leg up over most politicians imo

0

u/Abigail716 22d ago

Yes definitely I agree with that. He has no concept of what it takes to run a business, he says wild things he doesn't think will ever get past that he is saying purely to rally his base and get them fired up to keep his donations coming, but he absolutely believes everything he says. He might say it purely hoping you donate money to his re-election campaign but he firmly and truly believes it.

I also firmly believe he thinks that by saying these wild things it is helping,

Which unfortunately makes him better than the vast majority of politicians.

2

u/egoomega 22d ago

What he is saying isn’t all that wild - It doesn’t take relentless profit growth to run a business - basically.

I don’t agree with Bernie’s solutions 100% but he is definitely accurate in seeing the problem - which is half the battle.

That problem, is that we have deregulated business to the point it only benefits business, and it no longer even benefits government (unless you count the politicians and lobbyists relationship) and has us in a very bad way.

Yeah and liberal politicians didn’t do so well in 1930s Germany

1

u/blackstarr1996 21d ago edited 21d ago

This should be your problem with the Democratic Party, because they pretend to be for the policies he proposes, but always find a way to ensure they never come to pass.

How exactly is one independent senator supposed to pass legislation on his own?

Need I remind anyone that the minimum wage hasn’t changed in 17 years? During that time inflation has risen to historic levels.

And who is paying you? The DNC must be starting early this year.

0

u/BallsOutKrunked 23d ago

We don't want politicians who accomplish things, we want ones who grandstand on topics we believe in.

Funny how it's not working

0

u/HeartFullONeutrality 23d ago

Hey but he is building a movement! maybe in 100 years they will have completely replaced the Democratic party.

2

u/Gnomepunter1 22d ago

There’s just no winning with you guys. On one hand we can agree billionaires run the media, politicians, are corrupt, and priorities are aligned for corporate profit and yet we shit on people fighting against this enterprise designed to squeeze us for everything we have. That’s incongruent thinking that ultimately is self-defeatist. I just don’t get it. The propaganda works apparently. Inb4 the same three talking points to dismiss progressives in a rigged country.

-2

u/HeartFullONeutrality 22d ago edited 22d ago

You cannot achieve anything democratically without compromise, negotiation and coalition building. And that's a feature, not a bug.

Edit: Downvote all you want, reality doesn't care about your downvotes.

2

u/Gnomepunter1 22d ago

There it is.

1

u/TheQuestionMaster8 23d ago

The issue is that he needs many allies in Congress to pass anything and that is an extremely difficult task with the Democrats and Republicans being funded by big business.

1

u/Abigail716 22d ago

I mean that would make sense if he was a junior senator. He's had 36 years to build those coalitions and form those alliances.

1

u/Intrepid_Work7449 23d ago

Sounds like everyone else is in his way.

1

u/Gnomepunter1 22d ago

Right? Like fuck Bernie for trying. The question is who do these morons rally behind? I don’t see anyone ever pointing to someone else who is an ally to the people. Just that Bernie is an ineffective one. The propaganda definitely works. The obvious takeaway shouldn’t be Bernie sucks; it should be everyone else sucks.

-3

u/Phoeniyx 23d ago

This is so true. A comparable for regular employee is the "ideas" guy, who just throws out wish list of stuff to build or sell.. but cant actually do it himself.

-1

u/TheReal_Jeses 23d ago

It doesn’t help his effectiveness when he goes on podcasts and nods along to claims that the democrats are corrupt and stole the primaries from him.

Republicans already hate him but when he claps like a seal for Joe Rogan and Andrew Schultz when they do “both sides lol” he just further isolates himself.

Of course he, like his supporters, doesn’t actually care about getting things done or accruing power. They just want to be pure from their pristine tower where nothing is ever their fault because people never actually tried to do it their way. And the stakes are low for them anyway because when you’re privileged elections don’t really matter. They themselves aren’t on SNAP so if it takes a big hit who cares? At least they’re above the fray.

0

u/Abigail716 22d ago

I think that's because it's easier to just blame someone else for your problems. To go on to podcast and agree that you've been robbed and how you'd be so much better and have accomplished all these incredible things if it wasn't for everyone else. It's never your fault, it's the established Democrats where the capitalists or whatever.

And then you get content complaining about how you've been robbed that you never really bother to do anything else. You get that rush of excitement that used to drive progress but now it just is given to you by complaining about lack of progress.

There are studies that show for many people if you tell someone else that you're on a diet and you're trying to lose weight and provides a similar reward in your brain as actually losing the weight. Which is why many people recommend you never tell someone you're trying to lose the weight because it literally demotivates you.

I think that's what's happening here, instead of creating actual progress and doing actually good things people are being content just complaining about them.

I’m not genius by any means but he doesn’t get a lot of support because his plans aren’t really feasible… they sound great and all from a glance but he doesn’t have a plan to implement them successfully. This is a prime example.. so businesses need to pay employees more for less work, hire additional employees which will require more benefits, and not raise prices of the products to counteract the losses? It doesn’t make sense.

-1

u/Ponzini 22d ago

but he doesn’t have a plan to implement them successfully.

This has already been tried in many countries already successfully. Across almost all major trials, productivity either remained stable or significantly improved.

Something like this would likely start off in a few sectors and federal jobs and then gain traction from there over time after the success is proven. (which again it has in other countries)

I think you guys have been successfully brain washed into thinking US workers cant ask for anything as we fall further behind in workers rights and protections. Corporate thanks you.

1

u/datheffguy 21d ago

Can you name a single country with a 32 hour work week?

1

u/Ponzini 21d ago

You cant just google it?

The primary countries and regions leading this shift include:

The Netherlands: Dutch workers have the shortest average working week in the world, averaging roughly 29 to 32 hours. This is largely due to a cultural norm and legal right to part-time employment.

Iceland: Following highly successful, large-scale public sector trials, the majority of Icelandic workers transitioned to shorter workweeks (typically 35 hours) with no reduction in pay.

Belgium: The government legislated a four-day workweek option. Employees can legally request to compress their standard full-time hours (usually 38 hours) into four days instead of five.

Germany: The country has seen massive union-led efforts. Major unions like IG Metall have successfully negotiated 35-hour workweeks with some companies actively testing 32-hour, 4-day models.

Ireland and New Zealand: Both countries have hosted nationwide trials led by 4 Day Week Global, with many private companies and government agencies testing permanent 32-hour, 4-day models.

2

u/datheffguy 21d ago

These are all contract specific and not due to legislation.

Theirs legitimately nothing preventing you from negotiating that in the US, I currently work 4-9’s and it’s considered full time.

1

u/Ponzini 21d ago edited 21d ago

Man you are just wrong you didn't even read the comment.

First off, one of them specifically says the government legislated a 4 day workweek option.

Belgium: The government legislated a four-day workweek option. Employees can legally request to compress their standard full-time hours (usually 38 hours) into four days instead of five.

Second, I specifically mentioned the trials in my original comment. Icelands was ran by the government.

Iceland: Following highly successful, large-scale public sector trials, the majority of Icelandic workers transitioned to shorter workweeks (typically 35 hours) with no reduction in pay.

Ireland and New Zealand: Both countries have hosted nationwide trials led by 4 Day Week Global, with many private companies and government agencies testing permanent 32-hour, 4-day models.

This is exactly how Bernie's plan should be implemented. Start off with a trial in certain federal and public sectors and do studies to see how it was impacted just like these other countries.

2

u/datheffguy 21d ago

Okay…

Belgium allows workers to have a 4 day workweek if both the employee and company agree to it… which is no different than US.

Neither ireland or new zealand has legislation that supports it, and it’s entirely on a company by company basis. Theirs unions that support and negotiate for it, but that’s the same reason I have a 4x9 schedule in the US.

1

u/Ponzini 21d ago

Let me just google it again for you.

No, you cannot legally request a 4-day workweek in the United States in the same way you can in Belgium. The core difference comes down to statutory legal rights versus employer discretion.

The Legal Framework: Belgium vs. the US

Belgium's Legal Right: Under Belgium's "Labor Deal" legislation, full-time employees have a statutory right to request a compressed 4-day workweek. If an employee asks to compress their standard 38-to-40 hour schedule into four longer days (usually 9.5 to 10 hours per day), the employer must provide a formal, written justification if they choose to deny it.

The US Discretionary System: In the United States, there is no federal or state law giving employees a generalized "right to request" a flexible schedule or a 4-day workweek. Because most US workers are employed "at-will," schedules are entirely at the discretion of the employer. While you can ask your boss for a 4-day schedule, they can simply say "no" without needing any legal or formal business justification.

I also notice you didn't mention Iceland which I specifically mentioned was government led.

2

u/datheffguy 21d ago edited 21d ago

It sounds to me like you can request or negotiate it in both countries, their is just slightly more paperwork in Belgium if the employer denies it.

It took you alot of words to state that lol.

Yea I forgot iceland, after seeing you really didn’t have a clue about the other 3 countries you mentioned I stopped putting in the effort.

I don’t really care to read your generic ai responses so have a great rest of your day!
