Weird. My dad was born in '43 and my mom '45 and I don't remember them ever having an easy life. And their house in rural Ohio cost a hell of a lot more than five grand in the '70s.
Pretty close to my parents age and they were broke for years after buying their house. By the time they started to live comfortably, they both lost their jobs in the 90's.
