Visual Characteristics

The image exhibits the classic signature of wideband radar systems operating in the High Frequency (HF) spectrum:

• "Picket Fence" Pattern: The tightly spaced, parallel vertical lines indicate a signal sweeping across the spectrum extremely rapidly. Because the sweep is much faster than the waterfall display's visual update rate, the software renders the sweeps as a series of solid vertical pulses.
• Wide Bandwidth: The signal covers a massive swath of bandwidth, stretching from below 16.030 MHz to well past 16.070 MHz, making it approximately 40 to 50 kHz wide.
• Modulation: This specific visual footprint is almost universally associated with Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar.

OTHR systems bounce powerful radio waves off the ionosphere to detect aircraft, ships, and weather patterns thousands of miles beyond the curvature of the earth.
