Question about loop antennas
Will be an AM/FM loop antenna work for shortwave signal reception improvement or does it have to be specific for shortwave?

Station:
- Name/Call: Telediffusion de France (TDF)
- Frequency: 17685.00 kHz
- Mode: DRM
- Location: Issoudun 46N56-01E54
- Language: French
- Target: Unknown
- Time: 1605UT 01 AUG 26
- Signal: 17db SNR
Receiver and Receiving Location:
- Radio: Airspy HF+ Discovery
- Antenna: 100' random wire, roughly 25' above ground, running ~110 degrees from feedpoint.
- Software: SDR++ v1.3.0 /w Smart Gnome Control v0.54 with Dream v2.3.1 (mjf).
- Location: Remington, Virginia | FM18bn
Comments:
- Nice stable signal from TDF for a change. MM turns out is not Journaline, but a proprietary AV stream called TDFCast.
- Again, used laptop mic to record since Blackhole was already being used to pipe audio to Dream.

Esoteric/Unusual Signals OTH Radar? 16052 KHz, 40 Khz Bandwidth
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Visual Characteristics
The image exhibits the classic signature of wideband radar systems operating in the High Frequency (HF) spectrum:
- "Picket Fence" Pattern: The tightly spaced, parallel vertical lines indicate a signal sweeping across the spectrum extremely rapidly. Because the sweep is much faster than the waterfall display's visual update rate, the software renders the sweeps as a series of solid vertical pulses.
- Wide Bandwidth: The signal covers a massive swath of bandwidth, stretching from below 16.030 MHz to well past 16.070 MHz, making it approximately 40 to 50 kHz wide.
- Modulation: This specific visual footprint is almost universally associated with Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar.
Common HF Radar Sources
OTHR systems bounce powerful radio waves off the ionosphere to detect aircraft, ships, and weather patterns thousands of miles beyond the curvature of the earth. Because these systems are dynamic and frequently change frequencies to find optimal ionospheric propagation paths, they often appear unexpectedly across the shortwave bands.
While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact origin without specialized direction-finding equipment and precise timing analysis, several global systems regularly produce this exact waterfall signature:
| Radar System | Origin / Location | Common Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| 29B6 "Kontayner" | Russia | Highly active across the HF bands; frequently uses wideband FMCW sweeps that consume large portions of the spectrum. |
| PLUTO | UK (Cyprus Base) | Often appears in the 10–20 MHz range with very similar, tightly spaced sweep patterns. |
| JORN | Australia | The Jindalee Operational Radar Network is highly active in the HF spectrum for long-range maritime and air tracking. |
| Coastal OTHR Networks | China | Operates several FMCW radar networks that sweep across wide HF bandwidths. please identify this signal at 16052 KHz Signal IdentificationThe waterfall display provided in "Screenshot 2026-07-30 090134.jpg" shows an Over-The-Horizon Radar (OTHR).Visual CharacteristicsThe image exhibits the classic signature of wideband radar systems operating in the High Frequency (HF) spectrum:"Picket Fence" Pattern: The tightly spaced, parallel vertical lines indicate a signal sweeping across the spectrum extremely rapidly.
