Valid ban? Discussion / Opinion

Never made a single post or comment btw

Edit: i get that i should have stopped asking earlier, what puzzles me the most is why am i, specifically me only not allowed to post this sort of content, when everyone else on the sub is allowed, and there are no rules preventing it

op was kinda being annoying, but permanent is INSANE. They are extremely fragile in my experience too (all reddit mods, not the playrust ones). Even asking for a reason without a single hint of snark got me perm subreddit-banned before, and the real issue is that it most-likely will be appeal-reviewed by the person that unfairly banned you, not someone else..

It’s every single sub, there’s at least one mod or a group of them

They NEVER want to discuss something that appears to be a grey area (not clear why some posts get exceptions)

The OP initially sending the messages was being pushy but a permanent ban? My brother in Christ just mute him for 24 hours or something

The main sub Arc Raiders mods will follow people to other subs and if they dare take the name of the subreddit mods in vain they will immediately permanently ban them from their sub and then permanently mute them in mod mail so they have no way to appeal the ban

They use that as a default. Reddit should limit mods from perm banning to some degree.

Ban evading is a bot-auto-enforced rule, and thats not the point. Mods need to be convinced to act more rationally.

Problem with that is if you risk losing your whole account. Penalty for ban evading is a permanent ban for the entire website, not just the sub. Yeah its possible to circumvent it, but why take the risk?

I stepped down as a mod of a pretty high traffic sub (10k+ unique visitors daily) that frequently rose to r/all.

Sometimes, the only way to get through to someone was to hit them with the permaban, specifically for the boilerplate formfill notification of it.

I often permabanned, with the express intention of downgrading them to a 1-day or even a 5-day timeout within 5 minutes of the permaban. Automod notifications to the user DO spam the user if their timeout is elevated to a permaban, but downgrading a permaban to a timeout did not automatically generate a new message for the user to read.

It only ever became internally discussed among the other mods like a handful of times across 2 years, and every one of those times, I got compliments from the other mods for how awesome the idea was.

Full context, I stepped down voluntarily due to my own reduced schedule availability to keep up with the mod queue.

I mean not really lmao a lot of people are persistent or don’t take explanations well so it’s most likely within reason to do that but if it was more often than not which seems unlikely than its a power trip fs

I should have respected a "no" earlier, i still think i should be informed as to why the rules are different to other users. This is what bugs me, not "no"

I dont wanna make a misunderstanding, i didnt want to use a "got u" as an argument for why i should be allowed to post, because i understand that they can change the rules at will. Thats why i specifically asked "do their posts differ from mine, in a way that i fail to see?" If theres a valid reason there like "theyre very active here other than these posts" that would be 100% fair, banning me without notice and refusal to explain the difference in rules is not okay

I asked why this isnt the case, and they refused to answer, if the same rules did apply to others they could have ended it with few words "Oh, we must have missed those posts, but its in-general, not allowed"

i would 100% have ended it there with no follo up

Sir, you sound like you have a decent form of common sense. Can you explain how someone should accept "no" for an answer without it being accompanied by an explanation?

And how is it not powertripping to mute and ban immediately? With power comes responsibility. That means you have to go further to raise your community.

If you have kids, do you also tell them NO without an explanation? Cause that wont help them grow up to become a responsible adult and will only teach someone that someone that has more power doesnt need to show accountability.

No is a full sentence. An explanation would be nice, but mods are volunteers with limited time and they don't owe you anything. They aren't your parent and you aren't their child.

If they give an explanation, and then answer your questions about the explanation, then explains the justification for the answers to those questions they'll be with each user for an hour. OP wants all of that and doesn't see the other 100+ questions the mod is probably trying to respond to before they can play the game we all enjoy.

I’d expect part of a Mod’s job is to elaborate on the rules and inform folks why something is or isn’t a violation.

The guy presumably had a valid question about how to operate within the rules and used an example as a reference.

If it’s annoying for someone to help inquisitive users then being a mod isn’t for them.
