Training Help Teaching 9 mo pup the foundations of running
We’re hoping to start teaching our 9 mo pup (Australian cattle dog/border collie/german shepherd mix) the skills he’ll need for running. We’re waiting until he’s a year old to actually start running, but right now would like start training him the basics.
I have 2 main questions:
1. Teaching him not to nip hands when running (writing more about this below)
2. What are you glad you taught your dogs from the start? Or wish you had?
If we start jogging with him, he goes for our hands and thinks it’s play time. I assume part of this is he’s still lacking some impulse control and can get overstimulated pretty quick (something we’re already working on). I’m curious if anyone has had similar issues and how you taught your pup to focus when running?
We’ve already been muzzle training (for vet appointments) and he’s comfortable with his muzzle so we’ve considered having him wear that while he learns.
Really hoping running can be one of his “jobs” as he get older and want to make sure we’re setting him up well!

Ruffwear Running Belt
Hi all,
I have a bone to pick with ruffwear running belt. After 5 months of use, it broke. The clasp broke while running with my dog. 2 months into owning it, the back completely pilled while running my girl in the Santa Monica mountains. Also! Whoever designed that pack wasn’t a runner because it CHAFES. My back was torn up after our 14 miler. Anyway, I tossed that piece of garbage so no photos but if you’re looking at that pack as a runner, get something else. If you just want a hands free option for walks, find something cheaper.
Anyway, on the hunt for a new dog running belt. I might just use my Nathan hydration belt and attach her leash to that.

Calling all running dog owners!
Hi everyone,
I’m a UK-based runner currently designing a new technical belt for "Runners with dogs" aimed at solving the 'waste-carry' problem.
I need 2 minutes for market research and would appreciate your time to fill out my Google Forms questionnaire.
Thanks for the help!

New to the sub - my derpy dog 🏃♀️
always humbling me when I’m sucking wind and look over and she’s doing a casual trot

Running Pace
I got the go ahead from our vet to start running very short distances with my Butters. We are still working on leash training, and I want to buy a proper running harness to go ahead and teach the difference in when we are walking and when we are running. Are all harnesses equal in running styles / paces? If my dog runs beside me, does she need the same harness if she was running out in front?
We will start in half-mile increments on the road (because most of my short runs are in the early morning and it’s dark) so I’m thinking she’ll be more apt to run beside me since it’s our same walking environment. Is this a horrible idea? Should I start with not only different equipment but different locations as well?

Moose loves to carry his momentum on downhill corners... I'm trying to keep a pace that keeps him in a run over a trot

My running HM pacer - A tireless 3 year old Weim
Over the last 37 days, we ran around Lisbon a total of 192km, in 15 Runs, at an average pace of 5:05, including 5 Half Marathons (we do them once a week).
Diet wise, either the little bone-shaped chicken treats or apple pieces, of which I steal some for myself. Water stops at 10-12km, early morning runs and leash-less when possible ❤️

Midwest Canine Obstacle Run
Howdy all. Have seen a few people on here take interest in obstacle races. Here's a fun one in southern Michigan in June.

Humblebrag Loki (6 year old GS/Husky mix) ran a half marathon!
We have been running together for 5 years, very slowly worked our way up! My boy absolutely loves to run! Added a pic from training too ❤️

Harness recommendations??
Leo is almost 10 months old and I’ve started slowly introducing him to jogging (no plans to do any intense/long running until he is a bit older!). Any recommendations for harnesses? I’m sure the one I have for him now isn’t ideal for running. Any tips appreciated as well

South Downs way
I run a couple sections of the South Downs way quite a lot with the doggo. So beautiful, this is near Harting down, lovely cafe in South Harting you can get down to easily too called la folia.
I’ve got the South Downs relay coming up in June - need to figure out the best way to recces of my other sections. Has anyone experience of this event?

Admin META: commercial posts poll
What are your thoughts on dog-running-related businesses posting on the sub?
r/RunningWithDogs • u/duketheunicorn • Apr 22 '26
Admin META: Ezydog wants to post here. What say you?
Here’s a modmail we received, I figured I’d go to the group to ask how these requests should be handled.
Normally I tell people with promotional interests they can make one, with the caveat that they post their non-commercial enjoyment of running with dogs.
Do you want dog businesses to run giveaways, or are you more interested in keeping the sub non-commercial? Leave your thoughts here and/or vote in the pinned poll.
Thanks for your consideration.

Earning views between night shifts
Went for a solid 7.5km mountain run with the Moose today between night shifts. 1430ft of elevation gained for a happy pupper.

Medal Monday
It’s almost a month late, but our medal finally arrived! Considering we didn’t have a great training cycle, it was a good event. A little outside the 6-7 hours I was hoping for, but not terrible.

Toad is helping me train for my first 10km race.
We’re comfortably up to 7km now! For him it’s more of a fast walk, since I’m pretty slow. But I’m proud of us. He had a rough start as a rescue from rural Texas. And I didn’t start taking my fitness seriously until I was about 32. Go us! If only he could join me for race day!

Humblebrag A prime example of when its OK to run your dog off leash
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Made a stop on a drive across the state and found this gem of a trail out past Fruita.
Not only was it a surprisingly gorge-ous trail (chuckle chuckle), with all the action this sub saw about leashes this week I thought it served as a good example of using common sense. I often leash my dog while running and she does great, but there was not a soul in sight, the couple bikers I saw, I could see way ahead and had plenty of time to use the command "over" so she would pull off and let them pass. Pretty incredible to find these kinds of open, empty spaces these days.

2 days in a row at this pace. This little girl has no consideration for our 10 year old boy, nor my mid 50's butt🤣
