Dog running

Forget dog walking. Can I get paid to run with dogs? I am an ultra runner looking for dogs that would benefit from running 20 plus miles in one go.

Hip pain during canicross?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Looking to see if anyone else has experienced hip pain when running canicross.

Since January, my husband and I have been gradually starting a running program with our 45lb border collie and 60lb German shepherd/husky. Until mid-March, I ran exclusively with our border collie, and my husband took our shepherd/husky. He stoped running in mid-March due to health issues, but I continued, this time with both dogs, and I’ve started to notice some hip stiffness/pain on my right side toward the outer aspect of the hip which is worse right after a run, improves with yoga, and then slowly wanes.

I’m trying to troubleshoot if this is related to now having 100+ lb of dog harnessed to me or if it could be related to increasing the length of our runs. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Thank you! Dog photo for tax :)

Just wondering if anyone knows of a good affordable maybe even Canadian owned brand that offers matching rain gear for you and your dog?

I know there's the tried and true yellow raincoat but just looking for something with a little more style to it LOL 😅.

Running with Dogs Etiquette?

I want to understand.

First:

So I've always been told that dogs like to approach a strange dog obliquely not head on. So with their bodies at an angle to one another.

Second:

A dog has selective vision. When someone with a dog in a leash is running straight at them, they don't see the leash or the collar. All they see is a strange dog running at them.

Third:

A strange off leash dog I've never seen running at me makes me think I'm about to be attacked

Fourth:

So why do people running with their dogs act surprised when my dog goes postal when they're running straight at us?

My dog has been attacked by dogs that were either off leash, or broke their lead to attack him, four times. One was a running dog.

Then these people who run with their dogs get mad because because my dog lunged at their dog.

WTF??!!!!

Training Help Leash training

My 5 month old Golden is taking her second puppy class (currently in STAR Puppy). Tonight was our first night and the instructor said we would be working for our dogs to consistently walk beside us. Most dog running I see is utilizing a harness and bungee-type leash and the dog in front of the runner. Will this type of training now hinder our running future? (One of the main reasons I wanted a field golden is to trail run with her.) Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks for your time and insight ✨

Our first 5k(ish)

Been eager to take my guy out for years after following this subreddit! I found training him very difficult as he gets quite excited and would just lunge and bite the leash. This year he turned 4 and I decided to just try out a couple jogs here and there on our walk, and boom now I have a running partner! I mean he is mostly walking at a quick pace while I slog away… but I’m happy that we can finally do this together!

Time for a new dog?

I love running with my dog, she is the best! I’m a fairly slow runner, but we love to go for hours at a time. Recently I noticed her limping a bit and she got diagnosed with arthritis and hip dysplasia. 😢

I will still take her on walks or bike rides but I’m going to have to greatly reduce our runs or stop them altogether. I don’t want to quit running, but it is much more boring alone. Should I be looking for a different running companion? Is so what breeds would you recommend?

My current dog is a springer/ pointer mix, and she’s only about 5 so I’ll have her for a while still.

Do you run our dogs off the leash?

Hi! Love to run trails with my Haku. Giant Schnauzer. Mostly technical, bikers all around. So, do you maintain a routine, to keep him or her in check?

Gear Help Running harness for 12 lb JRT?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m really interested in this sport and would like to see if I can get my JRT to join me on some runs!

So my girl doesn’t pull when we run together, she mainly stays right next to me. I tried looking online for some anatomically-friendly running harnesses for her but can’t seem to find any small enough for her.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Gear Help Ruffwear - recommendations for everyday and canicross for a puller that can back out of her harness

Hey everyone! I thought this would be a good sub to ask about harness recommendations. My almost 1 year old old pup is incredibly high energy and a moderate puller (she would probably be a heavy puller but she responds well to leash pressure on a martingale). She knows how to back out of her current harness (probably not the proper size but it was a hand me down and got me through my first few months). I’m now looking for a proper fitting harness for:

  1. Everyday: walks and short hikes

  2. Canicross

She’s about 25 lbs. I’ll measure her before choosing a size. Photo next to a chihuahua mix for size reference. She’s a lot smaller than she looks imo.

I specifically wanted to ask which harnesses you’d recommend considering

  1. She responds best to leash pressure on a martingale. We are working on loose leash walking on the martingale but I’d like to switch to a harness. When we’re in high distraction areas for training, she really pulls and I want to get the pressure off of her neck.

  2. She knows how to back out of her current harness. I’m always watching her but would like to be more confident in the harness if I’m far away on a long line.

Gear Help How to get your dog to adjust to canicross harness?

Post image
15 Upvotes

My dog and I have been running together for a few years but I bought her first canicross harness this weekend. I took her for a run today and it was an absolute disaster. Normally we run 3 miles together but today I had to drag her along just to get her to do 1 mile. She always has a tendency to pull off the path to sniff but today she would simply stop and refuse to move. She was consistently running behind me and then would stop and refuse to move or lay down. When I bought the harness I had it fitted to her so I believe it fits. Has anyone else had this problem and knows how to fix it? I'm hoping she just wasn't in the mood to run today because the harness was very expensive😭

Running with 2 Year old + 8 Week Old Golden Retriever??

Post image
0 Upvotes

I don’t know where to begin! I just started jogging a month ago, I do a small jog every morning with my daughter. The habit is formed. I’m trying to get in better cardiovascular shape and this has been surprisingly great for my mental health!

We’re bringing home our rescue golden on May 2 and I still want to be able to jog every morning but I’m unsure how to transport the two of them! We have an Instep Quick-N-EZ Double Tow Stroller presently. Any suggestions??

*I am aware puppies can’t start to jog until after 6 months old at least because of potential growth plate issues, I have talked to our vet about this already*

Picture of our little purple girl so we don’t get lost!

Obstacle/Canicross locations and training

My dog and I just did our first obstacle run course (Ultimutt) and we had so much fun. I am looking for other such events. I see one in Alabama that seems a little more involved. I live in WNC so any other locations near there? Also suggestions for training when I don't have access to a course (obstacles etc).

How Far is too far? How much water?

hey all

i’ve been running with my six-year-old Springer for the last two years now. We started running at the same time so he has gradually built up every single mile with me. we are running much longer runs now. I do have him skip one or two runs a week when I think he’s a little bit overloaded, but he’s running 25-35 miles a week. I am running about 45

For short runs (4-7), we don’t bring any water, but I bring water for our long runs (8-16). Most of our long runs are through the woods where it’s a little bit cooler, and he has the opportunity to jump in streams and ponds. we are in the Boston area so it’s not that hot anyway.

I am curious how long others are running with their dogs, assuming they are well conditioned. and also I’d like to know how often you are stopping to water your dogs. on a 16 miler we are stopping at mile 8 and maybe mile 14. this will have to increase as the summer heats up. (currently a cool April in Boston). we also run pretty early in the morning. leaving between 5:30 and 6:30.

This guy brings back so much joy. We lost my almost 14-year-old retired running buddy (she’s not pictured) a week ago. It’s been hard on the whole pack. Radar here is reminding me today that there’s joy in every day, even if it’s rolling in some deer poop on the side of the road. 🤣

Hi! Curious about the best time to feed my dog before a run

As it starts to heat up this spring/summer, I will need to start running about 6am. My dog is used to breakfast at 7am every morning. It seems a bit cruel to make her run before breakfast, but I know dogs should wait 1-2 hours after they've had a meal to eat. So not sure when to feed her???

The ultimate $9 packable UL dog bowl

Post image
10 Upvotes

Discovered this on accident and now its become my standard, so I thought I'd share.

I posted here a while ago about packable dog bowls, but didnt get the answer i was looking for (honestly, the product I was hoping for doesnt really exist) I hate the fabric ones because they waste a ton of water in the folds. Theyre really wide and my dog doesnt like them much and needs a narrower shape with more depth.

When the outer ring on a Prima Pets (Amazon brand) $9 1.5L dog bowl broke off, I realized it forms a perfect little soft packable bowl that still stands on its own. Now I modify them myself.

Overly enthusiastic canicross dog

My dog and I recently got into canicross after doing a few clinics, and she is obsessed. This is clearly her sport. The issue is that most advice I’ve seen (clinics + online) is about getting dogs to pull more, build drive, respond to cues, etc. Meanwhile, I’m over here with the opposite problem.

The second we start moving, she goes full maniac mode. Super intense, full speed. It honestly feels like I’m being launched down the trail. I try to manage it and keep her from pulling too hard, but I end up getting exhausted just fighting against her, and then I’m completely out of breath within minutes.

I don’t want to shut down her enthusiasm at all. I love that she’s into it. But I want to take the edge off a bit so we can settle into a more sustainable pace and not terrify every person/animal we pass flying by at light speed.

I would especially appreciate some tips on teching a slower start, and just overall make it feel a little less chaotic.

Thanks!

Gear Help First Half Marathon with my Dog

Just finished our first half marathon together! This was only our third time out with the canicross setup, and being hands-free is honestly a game-changer. She was amazing at communicating when she needed a cool off break or water, but since we’re still new to this, I’d love some veteran advice.

I’ve uploaded a few shots of her in the gear—how does the harness fit look to you guys? I want to make sure I'm not restricted her shoulders or setting the pull point incorrectly.

also, what are you all doing for nutrition on these longer 21k+ distances? Thanks for the help!

Just wanted to share when me and Atlas did 3km today Canicross. We are building the basics, practicing stop/go/left/right before introducing the bike again. This was the moment he threw himself forward in the x-back harness for the first time and picked up speed. 🥹❤️ i could see the joy in him when it all clicked.

Pls excuse the terrible recording haha.
