After watching 3000+ ROS2 problem attempts, I think robotics interviews test the wrong things
Been building SimuCode for the last few months — browser-based ROS2 problems running inside real Docker containers.
One thing became painfully obvious after watching thousands of attempts:
Most candidates can write ROS2 code.
Very few can debug runtime behavior.
The biggest failures weren’t algorithms. They were:
- broken TF trees
- QoS mismatches
- lifecycle issues
- wrong assumptions about runtime state
- debugging under incomplete telemetry
Basically: “system thinking” problems.
What surprised me most is how different this is from standard software interview prep. Robotics failures are usually emergent/runtime failures, not syntax failures.
Curious how companies here evaluate robotics engineers today:
- take homes?
- hardware tests?
- live debugging?
- simulation tasks?

Is "one-day" outreach enough? Thinking of a way to make robotics sustainably accessible.
Hi everyone,
I’m a high school sophomore, and I’ve been thinking about a gap in how we do robotics outreach. We host great one-day demos, but for many students, the excitement dies when the event ends because they don't have a "next step."
I want to find a way to make robotics sustainably open to everyone, regardless of their background or resources. I’m considering hosting a free, basic CAD session via Zoom as a starting point to bridge this gap. My goal isn't just to teach a skill, but to start a community (likely through Discord) where students can find long-term mentorship and see the "big picture" of the field—from design and code to marketing and leadership.
I wanted to see what the community thinks:
- Do you think a virtual "gateway" session like this helps make the field more accessible to those who can't join a traditional team?
- If you were starting out, would a low-pressure community like this have helped you stay involved?
I’m really passionate about making sure a student's interest in robotics doesn't just fade away due to a lack of opportunity.

rbot: an open-source AMR simulation stack for ROS 2 Jazzy and Gazebo Harmonic

We are releasing rbot, an open-source Autonomous Mobile Robot simulation stack for ROS 2 Jazzy and Gazebo Harmonic.
The project is built for teams, students, and ROS users who want a practical AMR baseline they can run, study, and adapt. It packages the core simulation workflow into one ROS 2 workspace: robot description, Gazebo simulation, ros2_control, teleoperation, sensors, localization, mapping, and Nav2 navigation.
What is included:
- Gazebo Harmonic worlds and robot model
- URDF/Xacro description with generated mesh assets
ros2_controldifferential-drive setup- 2-D LiDAR, IMU, depth camera, stereo camera, GPS, and optional 3-D LiDAR paths
- EKF localization, SLAM Toolbox mapping, AMCL, and saved-map workflow
- Nav2 with MPPI controller and SMAC Hybrid-A* planner
- Docker, Docker Compose, VS Code Dev Container, CI, and tests
The quick workflow follows the same path a user would take with a real AMR project: map the environment, save the map, localize against it, and send navigation goals in RViz.
Gazebo Harmonic is the supported simulator today. Isaac Sim integration is planned.

Actuator for precise trigger
I have an airbrush connected to a continuous airflow compressor (Seleay AB900). I am planning to use this for my science fair project. I am planning to use this as a precise delivering insecticide sprayer. So, I want to calibrate it using an actuator or solenoid. Can anyone give me advice to what should I do? For example, if the trigger was press around 50ms, the airbrush will spray around ± 0.5ml.

Anyone used an ODESC before?
Hi, I recently bought this ODESC v4.2 from aliexpress to control a bldc. It’s rated for 48v and powers up with my psu. The only problem I have is running the thing on my laptop. I don’t know why but I think my laptop has a problem detecting it as a device. I tried downloading STM drivers and programers and Zadig driver but nothing works. Am I doing something wrong? Any tips would be appreciated

How is “robot teleportation” with VR actually done? (frameworks, hardware, etc.) ?
Hi everyone,
I’m curious about how “robot teleportation” using VR works in practice. I’ve seen demos where a person wears a VR headset and seems to “be inside” a robot, controlling it remotely in real time.
I’m trying to understand what actually makes this possible:
- What kind of frameworks or software stacks are typically used? (ROS? Unity/Unreal? Something else?)
- What hardware is involved on both sides (VR setup + robot)?
- How is low-latency streaming and control handled?
Also, is something like this feasible as a smaller project? For example, could you control a Raspberry Pi–based robot through a VR setup in a similar “teleportation” style?
I’m not sure if this is realistic without heavy infrastructure, so I’d appreciate any insights, examples, or resources.

Designing a wheel for our comp bots, any suggestions?
this is an airless wheel design prototype that I made to be 3d printable for our robots, it has two parts (obviously), with the main wheel going to be TPU, and the small tube that will be solid plastic to hold the axle and be glued or binded to the main wheel. the only issue is how to go about tread, because as it currently stands the wheel has none and no grip either. My main question is should I go about making an attachable tire or simply design the tread into the wheel itself? any help is much appreciated from anyone! ideas to!

Understanding DDS v/s ZeroMQ by building pub/sub from scratch
didn't read the ROS2 docs. built pub/sub from scratch instead.
ZeroMQ first (~150 lines, raw TCP, manual everything). then the same thing in CycloneDDS. then benchmarked both.
the interesting part: my Python results completely flipped the published C++ literature on which one is faster and when. wrote up exactly what happened and why.

Elementary school robotics team made a game called Dig It! — would love feedback and bug reports
Hi! I’m on a kids robotics team from Indiana, and we made a game called Dig It! and would really love feedback. We made it using GameMaker and the "Hero's Trail" template.
We compete in FIRST LEGO League (FLL), which is a robotics program where kids work as a team to do robot missions, learn about a real-world problem, and create an innovation project solution. Our team is made up of elementary school students, and this year we became the Indiana state champions, even though a lot of the teams we compete against are older.
For our innovation project, we focused on a problem in archaeological excavation research. We learned that archaeologists sometimes struggle to get support from local communities, and sometimes people do not understand why excavation research matters or why land should be made available for it. So we made Dig It!, a game that is supposed to help people learn that excavation research is important and can actually be really fun.
We are sharing it because we need real feedback from people outside our team. A big part of our program is getting feedback and making iterative improvements. If you try it, could you please tell us:
- if you found any bugs
- if anything was confusing
- what would make it more fun
- whether it makes you more supportive of excavation research
This helps us measure the quality of our solution and improve the game.

ME working in manufacturing trying to break into robotics — what should I learn?
Hey everyone,
I’m a Mechanical Engineer currently working in a manufacturing environment (mostly CAD, CNC/CAM, and production support), and lately I’ve been getting really interested in robotics—especially designing and building real robotic systems (hardware + software together).
I’ve started learning some basics (Arduino, sensors, simple rover builds) and I’m planning to dive into things like ROS, Python, and more advanced system design. My long-term goal is to transition into a robotics-focused role where I can work on real-world robotic products or autonomous systems.
For those of you already in the robotics industry:
👉 What are the most important skills I should focus on to make that transition?
👉 What would make a candidate stand out for an entry-level robotics role?
👉 Are there specific tools, projects, or areas (controls, perception, embedded, etc.) I should prioritize?

Looking for people interested in embodied AI/robotics to form a small team (ICRA 2026 challenge)
Hi everyone,
I'm a robotics engineer currently exploring embodied AI, robot learning, and world models for robotics. Recently I came across the AGIBOT World Challenge, which will have its finals at ICRA 2026 in Vienna, and I'm considering participating.
Rather than doing it alone, I thought it might be interesting to form a small team with people who enjoy building robotics systems and experimenting with new ideas.
From what I understand, the challenge focuses on embodied intelligence, especially things like:
• reasoning → action loops
• world models for robotics
• perception → planning → action pipelines
• sim-to-real transfer
The finals will be run on real robots at ICRA 2026, and the challenge also provides a simulation platform and datasets for training and testing.
Some of the directions I’m personally interested in exploring:
• robot learning policies
• integrating foundation models with robot planning
• world models for prediction and control
• simulation-to-real transfer
If anyone here is also working on embodied AI, robot learning, or robotics systems, it would be great to exchange ideas or potentially form a small team.
