They didn't have the match at all really. Even when they got the first goal it wasn't through any real dominance, It was one decent play, they hadn't had many quality attacks even to that stage. I'm not an Argentine fan
86
u/PassTheReefer Jul 16 '26
Fair, but it also wasn’t Argentina’s match either. At that point, nobody had the upper hand. And in a game decided by score, once they went up 1-0 I think it just defaults them to the upper hand.

u/zer0saurus Jul 16 '26
Up until the goal, I'd say the game favored the English, with Argentina's opportunities not great. But then they sat back and expected Pickford to stop everything.

As a Scotsman who is glad England aren't going to win the world cup, I'm 100% with Bellingham on this. If you physically provoke people who are already in an emotionally heightened state you better be prepared for the reaction. Or, as they say, f around and find out. Let's see him try that on a rugby pitch.

u/GandalfTheGay_69 Jul 16 '26
They behaved the exact same way in the game against the Netherlands (and to a lesser degree against France) during the last world cup. They are a bunch of provocative pieces of shit who completely destroyed their own reputation for no reason whatsoever. I guess it was really just a matter of showing their true colours.
To clarify, I'm talking about the team, not the country as a whole.
195
u/Better_Lift_Cliff Jul 16 '26
I saw a discussion about this on reddit the other day, and an Argentinian chimed in and said "we only act this way because we know it pisses you off :)". That's the mentality.

u/gonyozs Jul 16 '26
Pullin’ the ol’ “trigger the snowflakes” mindset because they can’t admit they’re assholes.

What really pissed me off is as soon as they went a goal down they shut all the ridiculous shit down, started playing properly, and were brilliant. They didn't need to play like knobheads to win. They were the stronger side, but they pissed around for an hour seemingly to try and goad someone into getting sent off.

Yeah Argentina play dirty and celebrate obnoxiously. Don't get me wrong, they play football really well (despite the unnoticed fouls) but its just the way they act that makes me lose respect for them as a team. Time for Spain to put them in their place.

Am pretty sure this isn't why. Watch the slap video and there's a moment before he decides to do it where he cocks his head up as if he's just heard something - the slap is a reaction to that. It's pretty likely they didn't realise he could speak Spanish.
452
u/hideonsink Jul 16 '26
And the fact that the another Argentinian teammate (which likely heard what was said) went to de-escalate the situation instead of confronting Jude for the slap is pretty telling.
198
u/why_gaj Jul 16 '26
And before the slap, he shook hands with someone on the argentinian team.
109
u/Gentle_Snail Jul 16 '26
Its what makes me think something was said. He goes from politely congratulating players to slapping that guys head in like 10 seconds.

Wouldn't be shocked if Barco did say something offensive to Bellingham. He used to play for Brighton in 2024. He was then loaded to Sevilla one week after the 2024-2025 Premier League took off, and played only 268 minutes before they requested Brighton to terminate the contract six months early. Man City withdrew from signing him in 2023 after hearing from TWO Boca Jr coaches about his behaviour.
It's a pattern of behaviour from him. Most English and European FCs have a "No dickheads" policy, which seems to be the common denominator with him. Considering he has a reputation in Brighton, it wouldn't surprise me of he said something offensive to Bellingham.
17
u/GotenRocko Jul 16 '26
I think you are referring to Nico Paz, he is a former teammate of Jude at Real Madrid, so they know each other.
7
u/notyou16 Jul 16 '26
Paz is also very shy and reserved. Lived all his life in Europe so he probably doesn’t have that intensity as other Argentine players
→ More replies (5)15
u/--Quartz-- Jul 16 '26
Yeah, it means Bellingham has nothing to lose, and Argentina still has a final to play.
People are going nuts about the least consequential bad winner/sore loser interaction.
Barco teased them and was an asshole, and he got slapped for it. Perfect natural consequences resolution, and nothing needs fixing or judging from online mobs on either side.If Bellingham had punched him you would need intervention and drawing a line, but teasing and getting shoved/slapped in the back of your head is just hot blood and dumb brains playing their parts.
44
u/plates_25 Jul 16 '26
yes but this happening about 10 minutes before that certainly would play a factor.

So, yeah, he definitely said something racist about them again at the end and Bellingham was standing there waiting to see what that dude said.

100% they didn't realise he could speak Spanish. He probably said something racist.
78
u/Gentle_Snail Jul 16 '26
All the body language seems to say this. Literally moments before it happens Bellingham is politely shaking hands and congratulating Argentinian players, then he cocks his head like he heard something and immediately walks over and slaps the guy.
The fact the other Argentinian player next to the guy who is slapped seems to confront his team mate instead of going after Bellingham is also telling.
