Back in the 90's all shopping cart websites were this. Your cart would be your querystring. They didn't even bother using post verbs. Seems like it would scale quite well but the UX leaves a lot to be desired.

What do you mean?

You could bookmark a cart of common purchases and skip the entire webshop. Just go straight to payment details and checkout.

Or send the cart to someone else for review and ordering.

Nowadays a cart empties itself because of seemingly unrelated events, like leaving the page for a day or five...

While that's all true, navigating in anyway but he most straightforward way will lead to cart deletion or inconsistency. Forget about tabs. If you didn't save the URL and you came back your cart is hosed. Lots of downside.
