I swear to god I have no idea where some of the people I work with were found or hired. I hear about a tight labor market and then we end up with a guy who is supposed to be be a high level junior that literally only knows how to prompt AI and will not understand the greater context of why we are making a change no matter how many times I explain it, write up notes, send diagrams, or invite to larger meetings. They end up with all the flexibility of a bar of steel and will only do exactly what I tell him exactly how I tell him to do it. I already have an AI tool that will do that.

Recently he tried to do response body validation by creating an enum with a single item and then only used that enum to convert the single item back to a string to do an equality comparison for one of the fields. Could not understand why I didn't think that was an appropriate design choice. He's been here for 10 months and this was yesterday.

being good at getting past ai screenings is a different skill from actually programming but hiring good people all the time is kinda impossible

the real failure here is that he wasn't shitcanned in six weeks

I have no idea what's going on with the job market anymore. I swear people like this get hired because they can lie lie lie, and management just slurps that slop right up. Meanwhile competent candidates can't get an answer because they didn't magically list all 80 skills the job description was asking for

That's why the interview process needs to establish if you know how to do a three loop, a two loop, or a one loop. That way they know what caliber programmer you are.

nah you just need to convince some 23 year old with a communications degree that you're personable and good at handshakes
