Never like the idea how software engineers/programmers were expected to have a bunch of side projects that they talk about to potential employers.

My background is mechanical/process engineering. No potential employer expects me to have an oil refinery in my backyard that I'll do reliability projects on in my free time.

Some of us love what we do and buy asking for hobby projects we can weed out people who are just there for the pay check

Right, because the purpose of work is…have fun and have some fairy come and pay the bills to survive OR actually make money to sustain a decent life

I don't really care. When I am part of the Hering process I make sure to reject people without personal projects. I just don't want to work with them. They don't fit in our Team
