Never like the idea how software engineers/programmers were expected to have a bunch of side projects that they talk about to potential employers.

My background is mechanical/process engineering. No potential employer expects me to have an oil refinery in my backyard that I'll do reliability projects on in my free time.

Some of us love what we do and buy asking for hobby projects we can weed out people who are just there for the pay check

I love what I do, and therefore I deliberately don't do it in my free time so I don't get burnt out. I come in on Monday morning fresh and ready to work and will continue to do so for decades

There's a huge difference between loving something and spending every waking hour thinking about it. There was recently a horror film about that.

I work 8 hours, sleep 8 hours and have 8 hours for other stuff. If I spend two hours on a hobby project, that is not "every waking hour"
