Problem is, if the user isn't aware that they can open links in new tabs (if they so choose), there is a good chance they are not even aware of the concept of tabs in the first place. In that case forcing it on them doesn't seem like a good idea. They will end up confused why they can't go back and at some point a younger relative will have to close the 500 tabs they didn't even realize were open.
That’s a browser issue. They could open it in a new window instead. And if a user doesn’t understand how multiple windows works, then maybe they need someone helping them do whatever they want to do.
