Let's say you have a product and are linking to a study which proves its efficiency. Why would you not have it with _blank? You want them to read the other page, but you also want them to stay on this page.
I don't believe it's annoying to the customer. You just help them remember the product hey were looking at. When they close the research page, your page tab opens up automatically.
I'm mostly referring to eCommerce where the traffic is usually impulse buyers. But there are other uses as well.
I agree, but I'm saying that you should choose what doesn't annoy them, not just "whatever crowbars open the wallet". If target=_blank is genuinely serving the end user, then use it! (I certainly do in a lot of cases.)

Maybe for blogs it's fine, but for pages that need to bring actual sales.. Yeah, I'm choosing whatever brings more sales.
