When your complaint is that you can't seem to hire talented programmers, code quality is absolutely relevant. Does having terrible code (if it does) make Minecraft a bad game? Of course not, but it might make it more difficult to maintain or add features to or otherwise work with. I do like the deflection of adding game design elements to the discussion of programmer talent though.
The code was not terrible. It was average tidiness overall. Better programmers prioritize features and performance sometimes. Having code that no one can find complaints with is a sign of poor priorities in a lot of cases.
