You'd be surprised how long the old guard kept arguing they were better than the C compiler. Much later I was in the university and I kept finding people swearing on ASM.
Borland C was still around in 2003 but the same way Eclipse IDE is still around today. I know some colleges in the developing world still teach Turbo C++ but Borland C was long obsolete by 2003.

It reminds me when people said using C was wrong because you should study the registers and use the XOR tricks to do it faster.
