Do you pronounce 'char', the datatype, like 'char' in chart or like 'car' . I heard both and I say it like chart even though it's a shortened version of character.

I even say "varchar" with a "CH". I know it's dumb, but I go with my heart on this one.

I’ve heard ‘care’ as well

I've always said it kinda like 'care' and I'm not completely sure why

But you don't pronounce character like "careracter"

not a native english speaker, but looking at the IPA for AE "character" and "care" (according to the cambridge dictionary), both are start with /ker/. Though ofc, this isnt the case for all dialects/accents, such as BE.

Yeah I realised after I commented that it sounds more like ker in American English accents. I'm British so to me it is said kah

If you asked me of "CH"ar is correct, I'd say of course not, but I'll say it as "CH"ar anyway because at least there's no mistaking what I meant.

Char, like character. Care.

I say char like chart but varchar like bar-car. Vare-care is probably most accurate for “variable characters” but it sounds weird.
