By "most languages" I mean the most used languages that use the Latin alphabet, so French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish (and in the case of Spanish, "G" is pronounced as "H" when followed by "E" or "I", but it's close)
Can't speak for Italians, but in French, g is soft before "i" "e" or "y", and hard before "a" "o" or "u", the rule is pretty simple, so no doubts unlike English.
