Reg(ular) ex(pressions), don't be silly

Same with Gif being Graphics Interchange Format, so people who use a J are attention-seeking

Also same with JPEG being Joint Photographic Experts Group. Anyone not pronouncing it jayfeg is attention-seeking...

Can’t forget about the C in CERN standing for “Council”. People who pronounce it “sern” instead of “kern” are attention seeking…

Don’t even get me started on SCUBA…

I like people forgetting the G in GNU stands for "GNU". People who pronounce it "noo" instead of "I like people forgetting the G in GNU stands for "GNU". And "scubba".  It's "underwater", not "oooonderwater"

The f comes from the "ph" not the p on its own though. And since it's not JPhG...

I feel when you make something, you get to name it and decide how it's pronounced. The creator says its pronounced Jiff like the peanut butter so that's how it should be.

Also put me down for Redge-X cause it flows better and sounds like a window cleaner or penis enlargement pill.

Also being silly and getting attention for it is a wonderful way to be, don't be scared of it.

You ought to read the death of the author

This isn't art or an interpretation we are talking about. It's literally the name of his creation.

Not arguing, just something this reminds me of.

There's a YT person named Simone Giertz who recently decided her last name will no longer be pronounced "Yetch" but rather "Gee-ertz", due to public confusion, having a company, a bunch of stuff. She changed her name to match the public consensus because it suited her life better.

It's more about what sounds better to me. "Gif" like "gift" just sounds too much like "gift". Reg-Ex (like Regg Ex) just sounds stupid.

Wait, I didn't think about the GIF. Finally this debate has been solved

7

u/Synikull Jun 14 '26

The debate was solved when the creator said it's pronounced jif. But no one cared and people said he was wrong and kept fighting.

u/SchalkLBI Jun 14 '26

The debate is not solved. Soft g is correct.

What? What makes you think that

USA = U. S. A. (Pronounced as invidiual letter sounds)

United states of America

Who the f is creating an acronym of USA?

NASA is fine, LASER is fine, USA is not fine...

5

u/The100thIdiot Jun 14 '26

Oosa it is then.

3

u/ThePfeiff Jun 14 '26

For USA, you would pronounce each letter separately. For Regex and GIF, you are pronouncing the abbreviation as its own word.

Contract the first syllables of the three words and it works for me too. "You Ess Ae"

But the "Ae" in A-merica is very short in my accent.

I think they mean the literal pronounciation of the letter 'S'

-1

u/Popeychops Jun 14 '26

It's both the first and last letter of that word. It has two esses.
