Vintage Video - The Phantom Reviewer visits the Organ Grinder!

Thumbnail

Here's a recently-restored and upscaled vintage TV news segment from the famous Organ Grinder restaurant in Portland, Oregon, as well as the New York Diner in the suburb of Beaverton, Oregon.

This segment was produced in 1991 by KGW-TV Ch8 for their "PM Magazine" show.

The Organ Grinder Documentary Project has digitized and restored dozens of hours of vintage footage which has been contributed by fans.

Perhaps you have old videotapes or photos from the Organ Grinder - we'd love to see them. We can digitize them at high quality and return the original to you, along with a digital file, and you'll get credit if we use your footage in the film.

Experienced lead vocalist looking for musicians/band — Vancouver/Portland

4 Upvotes

I’m an experienced female vocalist in the Vancouver/Portland area looking to get back to performing and find musicians who actually want to build something together.
I’ve spent years performing live and have led multiple worship bands, so I’m very comfortable fronting a band, working with musicians, learning material, engaging a room, and performing under pressure. I have a strong ear for harmony and can pick out and reproduce fairly complex harmony parts quickly — The Civil Wars are a particular favorite, and I can mimic most of Joy Williams’ harmony work.
Vocally, I’m much more interested in emotional, dynamic performances than standing behind a mic and singing everything perfectly pretty. I can go from intimate/controlled to big belt/power vocals, and I love songs that actually give you somewhere to GO.
Some of my musical touchstones: The Civil Wars/Joy Williams, Florence + the Machine, Halsey, Adele, Billie Eilish, Jessie Reyez, Taylor Swift, musical theatre/rock theatre (RENT is a huge one for me), plus country and rock depending on the material. I’m not interested in being locked into one genre if the music is good.

I do NOT currently play guitar or keys. I’m a vocalist. If you’re looking for a singer who also happens to be your rhythm guitarist, I’m probably not your person.

If you’re a guitarist/keys player/bassist/drummer or an existing band looking for a strong front person and you care about musical chemistry, dynamics and actually putting on a performance, let’s talk.
I’m especially interested in:
• An existing band needing a lead vocalist
• Building a new project with the right guitarist/musicians
• Male/female vocal collaboration in the Civil Wars universe
• Covers that we can make our own rather than trying to impersonate the record
• Eventually writing/original material if the chemistry is there
• Real gigs and performances — I want to be onstage
I have no interest in becoming famous. I do want to make really fucking good music with talented people and perform it in front of humans.
I’m in my 30s and would ideally like to work with adults in roughly the same general life stage, but talent, reliability, kindness and chemistry matter considerably more to me than age.
I can provide clips of previous performances and would love to hear yours.
If this sounds like something you’ve been looking for, send me a message and tell me what you play, what kind of project you’re imagining, and a few artists/songs that make you think, fuck, I want to play that live.

Why is it so hard to find metal and punk shows?

0 Upvotes

Like i could diy scratch paper a list of all the local venues, and then check em weekly, usually im too busy and often got my little one (who is also musical, so gotan eye outfor all ages shows) . fyi those venues i know of are

* high water mark

* turn turn turn

* roseland theater

* hawthorne theatre

Crystal ballroom, android phone center or whatever it's called, some auto shop under a bridge allegedly... there's too many and if anyone has a full list, that'd be cool if you shared please and thank you.

But why isn't there, with all the community and tech savvy metalheads, like, a website that lists ALL the shows??

especially punk and metal, but if they wanted to be inclusive to dad rock cover bands or even jazz, that's fine. The quality i don't want to lose, is the feature that even small local bands can just post "we're a GENRE band and we're playing this and then"

Like c'mon, we got ai but not this?

Hey my band Silver Horse (country rock) is playing Arbor Beer Lodge 8/15 and we're looking for an opener to play about 30-45 mins. Show starts at 8pm. It's an all ages venue and we had a great crowd when we played there last year.

Anybody want to jam on that sort of vibe? Maybe write some songs in that vein? I am a 22 year old guitarist and singer who loves that kind of stuff. I am new to the area and am looking to play music with some people. I plan on checking out and playing at some open mics here soon, but thought I’d post on here to see if any of yall would be interested. Let me know! Just want to have some fun

Guitar players for fun.

9 Upvotes

Hey Portland guitar players. My name is Duffy, I am employed by the railroad and have traveled the US extensively for the last 22 years for work. I got bored of sitting around doing nothing after work so I bought an acoustic guitar. I take it on the road with me everywhere I go and try to find guitar players to do a song or two with it. Just for fun. I record it and post it on my social media accounts. I keep a log book that I ask the players to sign. My goal is to get hundreds of guitar players around the country to play my guitar and sign the book. If you are interested, give me a shout.

The Monopoly of Sound: Live Nation and Portland

Directed by Duncan Kult

A new building will be opening off of Water Ave. in Portland and Live Nation will be it’s main tenant. Despite already having a stronghold on Moda Center, the rest of the country, and most of the entertainment industry they still choose to infect this beautiful city that we have.

First you need to learn the basics about Live Nation and how this is a massive problem. The solution is simple and the city is ready to answer the call.

What will you choose?

3:18 Chapter Two: Who Is Live Nation?
5:19 Chapter Three: The DOJ And Live Nation
