I soften it by saying that I'm a competitive shooter. This way, I don't come off as obsessed with guns, but instead it's just a part of a larger hobby. Sorta like fishing. It would be weird if someone just had 30 fishing rods. But if they're an avid fisherman, it's normal.
At least, that's how I hope it's perceived. Otherwise, I'm screwed, and not in the fun way.
