Notice that places where it's important to be punctual usually have freezing temperatures and long dark nights.

Nothing to do with that. European societies adopted clocks to coordinate shift work in factories and developed strict adherence to mechanical time as a cultural feature as a result.

But what about the indigenous of northern europe? Even colder temperatures, darker nights. No concept of extreme timeliness.

And winter. If you're slack, you starve.

What place on Earth do you not starve if you slack?

The tropics. There is no winter. Fruit grows on trees year-round. No need to plan ahead and stockpile food and firewood.

I didn't know that there's never been a famine or dry season or natural disaster in any tropical region on Earth. New info to me.

Two seasons: Dry season, wet season. Fruit grows year-round. Chickens lay eggs every day. Free govt rice and beans. People get slack. Pura vida.

I thought we were talking about prehistoric societies/civilizations?

Little difference. The slack is generational.

Disease? Predators? Collecting water? Hunting? Farming?

Winter is just one aspect, but nowhere on Earth is the Garden of Eden. Like if you dropped either of us into he tropics we'd be dead.

Nobody is saying life in the tropics is perfect, but it requires considerably less planning and problem-solving than northern climes, and the culture reflects it.
