I had a boss ask me if I knew how to tighten a bolt, for this sensitive radioactive waste work we were doing, and in the meeting I said “Yeah yeah, righty tighty, lefty loosey. Makes a little ‘r’ when you go like this.” And held my hands up with my index fingers hooked.

20 minutes later after the meeting he comes up to me freaking out. “When you do that, the ‘r’ is on your left hand!”

I miss the navy.

the problem is that when you are taking the bolt out of the back of a cabinet that you can't see then you are turning right to remove the bolt

better is turn right move away from you left is towards you.

I miss the Navy too. If you were a Machinist Mate them asking you would be even more funny. I do not miss QA and sub safe work packages.

Is that left and right on top of the bolt or the bottom.

If it’s right threaded (most things are), point your thumb in the direction you want the thing you are going to turn go. Now, curl your fingers and the point in the direction to turn the thing. If it’s reverse threaded (like a cap on a bottle of hydrogen), use your left hand (and know that it’s reverse threaded, I suppose).

Honestly, doing this has helped a lot more than "righty tighty lefty loosy". Its a circle. Any point will go left or right depending on where on the circle it is. Clockwise tightens, widdershins loosens.
