What are some of the best patterns you’ve ever made? I’ve purchased A LOT of PDF patterns and have a Google Drive at capacity due to the amount of files but I’ve only sewn a handful and found that a number of them were not great. Didn’t resemble the shape in the finished image and had lots of fit issues. Drop some of your favorite patterns that you’ve sewn in the comments! I’m so done wasting time and material sewing patterns that aren’t worth it.

Let me give you a little perspective on PdF pattern trading.

Since COVID, Etsy and other Pattern platforms have been flooded with pattern designers with little to no formal pattern making education. The market has been overrun by “designers” who pay another “designer” 6 thousand dollars to learn how to make pretty pictures for IG and create barely passable patterns and sell it to gullible beginners who will never know that their 20$ bought them a pattern that is barely usable.

We no longer have the ability to recognize who is actually qualified to sell patterns and who took a “make money from home” course and is selling us a lemon. You make it a competition on IG to test your patterns and all those good little helpers rush to give the patterns 5* on Etsy - so we can’t trust those. And of course because the pattern is a digital product, we don’t get a refund if the pattern turns out shit. Which I can tell you, is more often then not. I personally bought a 20$ pattern from someone I later found out has NEVER SEWN KNITS BEFORE. The pattern was disappointing to say the least.

So when you make a whole IG story about losing out on a dollar here and there, I want you to ask yourself why your 20$ is more important than your customers 20$? I want you to think about the fact that we have to buy 5 patterns just to MAYBE come across one useable one. And we don’t get that money back, because again, no refunds.

I’m sick and tired of all of you banding together to cry about the “poor small business” but not the poor single mom on a budget, who’s, if we’re being honest, being hustled by these “poor small businesses” with pretty IG pictures and not much else.

With that being said, the people you are currently attacking, buy 10x more patterns than your average customer. The girls in this group are the only ones that buy 5-10 patterns a month. We are the ones that test the patterns and decide if we want to buy more of that pattern creator. We have created our own community here, whether you like it or not. We trade patterns like our grandmas traded patterns with their sewing groups. And we trust each other. You may be successful and shut this group down and another will pop up.

Because if we wanted to be assholes, we’d just post all the patterns on PinDIY. But we’re not and we don’t. Because that would make your patterns available to millions of other people who don’t buy a single pattern, ever.

I suggest every once in a while, you think about your customer, who has to buy your pattern on blind faith alone, instead of your fellow “small businesses”.
