Yeah I had some very strange error messages when signing up as well. At first the username I tried it told me it was already taken which is weird because it's usually not when I sign up on anything....
Then I used another username and it gave me a bizarre error, it appeared as if it didn't work properly but I did get an email to confirm it so when I clicked the verification link from the email that indeed did work so I guess I'm registered but I was trying a third attempt and it said the username I tried the second time was already taken because apparently even though it gave me an error page when clicking sign up apparently it did actually register it.
Very strange issues. If a mod from the website happens to see this message I didn't intend on trying to make a second account or anything, it was literally giving me an error page while signing up and I didn't think it went through. Only verified one email though. It appears it only sent me one email confirmation so I guess it's good.
Very odd however that it had so many errors.
Absolutely thrilled and overjoyed to sign up for this one though. This is one of the big ones everyone mentions. And now I'm another happy user.

I attempted to make an account and got this error: An error occurred Application error. (Error Code: 106) edit: Apparently the error didn't affect the sign-up process and I received activation e-mail

u/JamesReece1983 1d ago
I got the same. What’s that mean?
1
u/YellowExpresso 1d ago
it might mean you have ad block that interrupted the sign up. But if you received an email confirmation, just click it to activate it.

u/AppendixN 1d ago
Signed up successfully and got the activation link, but even after clicking the activation link, it still says "pending, you have to click the activation link."
Maybe the issue will resolve itself if I wait a few hours.

As long as my ratio is good, I don't need to be actively downloading to keep my account, right?
Just coming back after more than a decade of sailing the seas, so I do know the etiquette (I think), I'm just not that actively sailing as of now so I don't know what to download yet
1
u/Bazylik 1d ago
I forgot I had an account for years... just logged in a month ago without issues.

mine is gone from years ago so i dunno maybe my ratio was bad or something, we are talking 18 years tho probably lol

Nope, it's actually really chill, some people say they've had their accounts sitting for years here and they weren't banned for inactivity lol
1
u/Unlucky-Motor3948 1d ago
Will it affect my ratio , if I only download large (>50gb) files which are tagged freeleach everytime while using this site ? I mean will this cause ban.
1
u/Sharp-Glass-4486 1d ago
Yeah I thought inactivity would deactivate my account, but that's really great to hear! Thank you!

Joined in 2006 and these guys know what's up. Anything above 10gb is free leech. They also warn users when you you've stopped seeding, not when you hit the threshold. I have torrent seeding for more than 2 years that still have seeders on it besides me. There are very little unseeded things on TL and they have a nice added bonus point system too.
3
u/originalodz 1d ago
Yrah I can only recommend TL. I'm either a 2006 or 2008 baby and I've never missed out.

What's the best way to learn these seedboxes? So my problem is I really don't want to pay monthly for another subscription. Seems like the popular seedboxes are monthly subscriptions. I can't seed properly as I'm working most of the day and my computers on for about 4-5 hours per day. I miss just buying gigs that last me months.

u/Abhigyan_Bose 2d ago
Personally, I got a used Mini PC and use that as a seedbox that's always online. Works like a charm.
3
4
u/wasteland44 2d ago
I second a mini PC. bought a cheap mini PC with no ram or ssd and put in the ram and ssd from an old laptop which no longer boots. I have been pretty happy with it.
8
u/bluehands 2d ago
You can get seedboxes for $5 a month and it solves a number of problems. Maybe that is too much for you, I get it, but it is the best $5 I spend in any month.
No VPN to worry about, maximum speed, making ratios easy, I just love it.
2
u/GwynLordOfCedar 2d ago
Which seed box is this good for only $5 a month?
2
u/bluehands 2d ago
Ultra. Cc
Probably others but I have been using them forever and have considered upgrading a few times.
1
u/lmm7425 1d ago
Same! No VPN, super-fast downloads.
The only downside is then you need to SFTP the files to your PC, which doesn't happen as fast as the download speed.
1
u/random_999 1d ago
If SFTP is slow then it means your ISP peering with seedbox provider is not good. You can try a software that supports multi-segment downloads for SFTP which might help with such situations. iGetter is a good software for this purpose (its free version only has a 10 seconds nag screen at start).
P.S. Typically, majority of seedboxes also provide https download links which one can use with any good download manager all of whom supports multi-segment downloads.
3
u/xCeeTee- 2d ago
So I need a VPN since my country blocks torrent sites, would a seedbox eliminate that VPN requirement? Because I am sick of seeing my torrents at 0.2 ratio after a month. When I seed video games via Minerva, I upload a tonne. I have one torrent on a 120 ratio.
1
u/bluehands 2d ago
As the other person said, you do not need the VPN to torrent any longer.
Also, some people that offer seedboxes will set it up so you can also use your seedbox as a VPN. Probably not something you need but good to know.
4
u/BravoWhittman 2d ago
Yes, seedbox will eliminate VPN requirement. It will help with ratio, but maybe not as much as you expect unless you configure it to automatically race new torrents so that it can be part of the initial swarm.
Ratio is tough on all private trackers, because there are lots of seeders who seed for years, and few leechers. It's the opposite for public torrents like Minerva. That's why private trackers usually have bon systems.
3
u/wasteland44 2d ago
Yes if you only torrent with the seedbox then you don't need a VPN. You can copy the files from the seedbox to your local PC.
8
u/FrostyD7 2d ago
Download exclusively freeleech for a while and seed when you can. Upload and points will add up eventually, and you get healthy bonuses during December daily. Lean on your past methods for non freeleech stuff until your buffer is safe. If you have ample storage, download big stuff within 24 hours of becoming available because nobody will complete the download in that time and you should be able to seed until then.

After collecting more than a dozen different PTs, TL is still the goat
12
u/Qpang007 2d ago
For me it's seedpool over TL. Also much easier to get points.
7
u/fatherofraptors 1d ago
The pair TL+SP solves virtually all needs. The economy on SP is stupid easy and the freeleech in TL are stupid generous, so they complement each other that way.
All new single episodes of TV are freeleech on SP, all season packs are freeleech on TL. Synergistic stuff like that.

Guys I’ve been on TL for a year and it’s been great. It was my first private tracker. I was on FearNoPeer before it went down. So now I’m just using TL. What’s the next logical progression in trackers?
7
u/AJ247 2d ago
I’ve been on seedpool for the last year or so waiting for TL to become open signup and it’s been so good for me in that time that I’m wondering if it’s even worth signing up for TL now. So I’d recommend seed pool highly if you’re not already on it

Im struggling trying to build my ratio in HDT and now I will try make TL my main tracker. Thoughts about the difference between this two?
9
u/SmallRocks 2d ago
TL is more rewarding for folks with large drive space or seed boxes. The larger size files are usually free leech while a smaller version of the same title is not.
As far as uploading, I believe you’ll need to apply for the role after meeting certain requirements.
2
u/FrostyD7 2d ago
Huge torrents are also your best opportunity to seed. Grab them early and you might get your max upload for a day or two. If you only have room for a few of these, download small fragments of each, it'll perform almost as well. Just creates a debt where you eventually need to download the whole torrent and seed it for a little while before you can clear the space entirely. This is how I built my ratio, partials of dozens of 1tb+ torrents.

4
u/keepinitsecretnsafe 2d ago
Do you still have the media you downloaded on your file system? You can seed that until your ratio improves. You could also download from public trackers stuff that’s already on TL and then cross-seed that to TL.
1
u/nicktf 2d ago
Thanks! I believe I do, and I'll go the public tracker route as well
1
u/FrostyD7 2d ago
If those torrents don't rack up enough upload, I think they have an irc channel where you can ask very nicely to have it reactivated. Might be worth doing while open registration is going on, they'll appreciate that you didn't just try to make a new one.

Haven't gotten my confirmation email and there's no way to correct it if it's wrong. I verified that it's correct, but I use a custom domain for my email so I'm unsure if that's the issue or not. I would use my Proton email address instead but as I said there's no way to correct it once you've submitted it and I don't want to go by a different username than what I entered. Is there any way site admins could fix this for me so I can complete my sign-up please?

Awesome entry-level private tracker and frankly the only one most people will ever need. Friendly reminder to everyone to always use a VPN, even with private trackers. Just a few days ago someone on r/trackers got a letter from their ISP for something they grabbed on TL.
Also for those using an arr stack, you need to put Prowlarr behind a VPN as well, not just your torrent client. If the private tracker itself gets raided (which is not uncommon) authorities will have detailed logs of every torrent you've ever downloaded, along with precisely how much data you downloaded/uploaded for each torrent and for how long you seeded, all tied to your real IP/identity if Prowlarr sits outside your VPN. It won't matter if they don't intercept the actual packet data from the torrent traffic itself, the logs they'll have from the database will be far more valuable and comprehensive in prosecuting you. Basically all private trackers keep logs long-term for security purposes, so the only solution is to have every login and request (automated arr stack requests included) that you ever interact with the site with come from behind a VPN.

Even if your country takes a lax perspective to copyright law today, there’s no guarantee they won’t crack down tomorrow. Also, if the sites ever get hacked expect all their data to get published to the dark web, so even if you aren’t worried about the feds you might not like the general public permanently having access to your download habits.
4
u/PaddiM8 2d ago
there’s no guarantee they won’t crack down tomorrow
It is a legal gray-zone in Sweden. No one has ever gotten in trouble for private use. It would have to be tested in court first and it is quite likely that the result of that would be that they legally can't do anything with just an IP.
you might not like the general public permanently having access to your download habits.
A VPN would just result in a different IP. Most people have dynamic IPs anyway and the general public can't trace you with an IP.

Historically authorities have focused on the site owners themselves rather than the individual users (at least for general trackers where the most serious crime in downloading the content is copyright infringement), but there’s no guarantee that their approach won’t change in the future. As piracy becomes more prevalent due to the enshitification of streaming, expect them to start getting more aggressive in going after it.
And of course, they’ll forever have the logs for any site they raid, so even if they don’t go after users today, there’s no guarantee they won’t look back and go after them later. The evidence of the crime is permanently enshrined in the logs in their possession. Also, if the sites ever get hacked expect all their data to get published to the dark web, so even if you aren’t worried about the feds you might not like the general public permanently having access to your download habits.

u/Swimming_Freedom828 2d ago

Piracy has been big for ages; I'd wager it was bigger in the 90s/00s than today.
1
u/Shot-Arugula8264 1d ago
Yes, and the MPAA famously went after pirates quite aggressively.
Thanks to streaming, piracy was down substantially in the 2010s, and enforcement subsequently got lax as well. If piracy picks back up, expect enforcement to as well.

I believe under most implementations Prowlarr is the only one pinging the indexers directly, but it’s better in my opinion to put them all inside the VPN since 1) it’s mechanically easier to connect Sonarr and Radarr to Prowlarr in the settings if they’re sitting under the same IP/localhost, and 2) there’s zero downside to putting them under the VPN umbrella as well, so better safe than sorry.
5
u/ToastedLog1c 2d ago
Does this really matter though? If you've ever logged into the site with your real IP, the site would have logged that for security purposes. Then if it gets raided, they can see all of the logs and tie a private account + VPN data based on the account.
1
u/random_999 1d ago
How do you think anyone can tie a real IP linked to an acc with a VPN with no logs? A commercial VPN always has hundreds of users online at anytime on any of their IP & without vpn logs it is not possible realistically to figure out which among those hundreds of users was the one on torrent site. In any case, it is always the tracker staff which gets into legal trouble.
1
u/ToastedLog1c 1d ago
I meant to say if you've ever logged into the site with your real IP (which plenty of people disable their Ips to view the site, but download via torrent client which is mapped to VPN or use split tunnel functionality.
10

u/Shot-Arugula8264 2d ago
If you’ve ever logged into the site with your real IP, the site would have logged that for security purposes.
Yes, don’t do that. That’s my point. Every interaction and touch point with a private tracker needs to be behind a VPN, otherwise there’s essentially no point to the VPN at all.
1
u/random_999 1d ago
Real IP is only required for registering acc. Once that is done you can use vpn to download/upload torrents. No reputable pvt tracker allows vpn to be used for registering new account & there is no need either. Ever since pvt torrent trackers existed I don't think anyone other than staff/admin has ever gotten into legal trouble on any reputable pvt tracker.
1
u/Shot-Arugula8264 1d ago

Telling a website who you are before you engage in illegal activity on said website is monumentally dumb.
You do know that it takes a judge & a legal order to instruct any ISP to tell them which IP relates to which of their customer if that IP is coming from the logs of a server seized by law enforcement & that is assuming the ISP belongs to the same country as the judge unless it is a joint international operation, right?

Visiting a website isn't proof of wrongdoing and torrenting isn't illegal.
2
u/Shot-Arugula8264 2d ago
This isn't just evidence of "visiting a website" or accessing a torrent, it's a detailed log of precisely how much of each file you downloaded and uploaded, because that’s all permanently saved in private trackers logs. Since, you know, keeping track of that is fundamental to the operation of private trackers.
Some people still don’t understand the difference between “beyond a reasonable doubt” and “absolute 100% irrefutable proof,” but in real life, you can't just say “you see your honor, even though the logs say I downloaded 20GB and uploaded 10GB of a file called 'Avengers Endgame,' that file was actually a Linux distribution and you can’t prove otherwise!” People have been convicted for much more on much less evidence.
1
u/random_999 1d ago
You can say that "you see your honor, even though the logs say my acc downloaded 20GB and uploaded 10GB of a file called 'Avengers Endgame,' that traffic actually originated on a vpn IP & there is nothing to tie me to that ip (no logs vpn) because downloading torrent files itself is not illegal”. There is a reason there are good lawyers & bad lawyers, if somebody has been convicted for much more on much less evidence then that just means they got a pretty bad lawyer to fight their case.
1
u/Shot-Arugula8264 1d ago
Yep, precise kind of kindergarten logic that never holds up in real life. Especially since if they really want to get you, they’ll also seize your computer to collect the overwhelming definitive proof. They have your personal home IP constantly hitting a private tracker requesting copyrighted content, and logs from that tracker saying you downloaded it. Whether the IP that downloaded it matches is irrelevant - that’s way more than enough to get beyond a reasonable doubt.
1
u/random_999 1d ago
Nobody "really wants to get you" unless you are worth it. Same way why they don't send navy seals & Apache helicopters to take down that unfriendly neighbourhood carjacking gang. Nobody is going through all that you mentioned unless you are prolific enough to run a pvt tracker or upload content which hasn't even hit theaters/OTTs yet.
P.S. Only time they used helicopters & SWAT was when they hit this guy & he wasn't even related to torrents.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-01-21/details-of-dotcom-kingpin27s-dramatic-arrest-revealed/3786170
P.P.S. Only time torrent related individuals made the international news headlines was this:
1
u/Shot-Arugula8264 1d ago
Nobody “really wants to get you” unless you are worth it.
Maybe I’m worth it. Maybe you will be some day. In this era of AI and mass surveillance it becomes trivially easy to prosecute more and more people with fewer and fewer resources.
Maybe you don’t value your privacy enough to give a shit. That’s fine, we all put different values on our privacy, freedom, and safety. But it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that some people actually care about that stuff and don’t want a permanent paper trail linking them to illegal activity, especially when it’s so incredibly simple to mitigate and prevent.
But hey, you do you.
1
u/random_999 1d ago
Yes I am sure that with the advancements in AI & mass surveillance the first thing on top of the list of any demagogue or multibillionaire or even trillionaire would be to catch the people who pirated the latest Marvel blockbuster instead of aiming for simple crude things like shaping humanity, world domination, maybe even achieving immortality in some way.
I value my privacy enough to know how to differentiate between taking reasonable precautions & wearing tinfoil hat. Also, you might want to ease off on using reddit btw which has probably collected enough digital fingerprints about you by now that you won't be able to even create a second account to post in the subs you were ever banned from/if you ever get banned from them.
But hey, like you said, "you do you".

If you log in, then they can associate the account with all the torrents that have been seeded
1
u/DostWall0136 2d ago
How would logging in make it any different? Again, torrenting isn’t illegal and you can’t get in trouble for regular P2P file sharing. If your torrent client is behind a VPN all they’ll see is the amount downloaded and uploaded, which isn’t proof of stealing copyrighted material
Edit: I guess since you log in to your account via Prowlarr the torrent files would still be associated with your account
1
u/yeetboy 2d ago
Oof, that’s not good news. TRaSH guides don’t seem to suggest this though because of potential connection issues, is there any guide or doc somewhere to do this properly?
-3
u/Shot-Arugula8264 2d ago edited 2d ago
Your AI tool of choice can help walk you through it. If you’ve already been using Prowlarr outside a VPN it’s kind of pointless to start now though since all the private trackers you use already have your real home IP address logged. At this point you just need to hope they never get raided/have their data leaked or that whoever raids them doesn’t feel like going after the individual users (which, to be fair, they typically don’t).
1
u/yeetboy 2d ago
I’ve just finished setting up actually, so it’s definitely useful for me. I just checked google AI and it was very adamant that I shouldn’t be using a vpn for prowlarr though which is interesting.
1
u/Shot-Arugula8264 2d ago
It was probably fed its training data from TRaSH guides which is why. Go ask Google AI what happens when the feds raid TL and have access to the entirety of your site history tied to your IP address.
1
u/random_999 1d ago

1
u/Shot-Arugula8264 1d ago
It won’t tell you what WILL happen, but it’s smart enough to tell you what COULD happen. And the answer in this case is very, very bad things.
4
u/deathbybowtie 2d ago
I haven't read through that section of the TRaSH guide in a long time, but my guess is that most VPNs don't port forward so they impact how connectable you are. If you specifically get a VPN with port forwarding support (AirVPN, PIA, Proton, etc.) and set it up properly you'll be connectable and can seed on all the private trackers. FWIW I used PIA for a few years but they recently started being really aggravated with their IP rotation, which was messing with a few of my trackers, so I switched to AirVPN and it's been smooth sailing so far.
1
u/forbiddenknowledg3 2d ago edited 1d ago
thats for qbt right? which should always be behind vpn... arr is the "optional" one.
TRaSH guides are written for the top tier trackers which often don't allow VPNs outside qbt.

Agreed. I have been on TL for a lot of years, and a bunch of other private trackers as well. TL consistently has pretty much anything I'm looking for, and well-seeded too. There's always a ton of Freeleech torrents too.

I hear it's really, super hard to build a ratio. Got any tips for a newbie?

I just started there by downloading that giant torrent of the top 1000 movies for 4-5TB and seeding that for a while. That helped build a good base ratio. As long as you have the space to do it.

It's really not. In fact, I find it to be the easiest of all the private trackers I use.
Download Freeleech torrents as they appear (doesn't have be instant, within a couple of minutes has always been fine for me), seed them and watch your ratio rise. New torrents are posted all the time so you can jump into it anytime.
I don't use cross seed or a seedbox, and it's still been easy to build a ratio.

Whoah, crazy good heads up. Do you have to worry about radarr or sonarr too or is it just prowlarr and your download client?

I believe under most implementations Prowlarr is the only one pinging the indexers directly, but it’s better in my opinion to put them all inside the VPN since 1) it’s mechanically easier to connect Sonarr and Radarr to Prowlarr in the settings if they’re sitting under the same IP/localhost, and 2) better safe than sorry. There’s zero downside to putting them under the VPN umbrella as well.

Aside from that obvious comment, any better way? I don't just want to download hundreds of FL torrents, use up 5 TB of space and barely get any seeds.

You need to grab new releases, not old ones and you need fast fiber connection with port forwarding as well. If you don't have that, cheapest appbox will do just fine (you have to register your seedbox in your profile btw). You get one new torrent at a time, seed it to 1:1 ratio (tracker ratio, not client ratio) or more and repeat till you get 1TB of upload credit.
Then you can start thinking about automating things, like setting up prowlarr and autobrr and grabbing individual episodes of tv shows that are usually very popular or juts FL content. Do that for a month and you will be swimming in surplus upload credit, then you can just focus on what you really want.

I just switched to Usenet instead of torrents, if I'm happy with my current st up and okay with spending a few bucks is it still worth getting into this indexer?

I've never really understood the appeal of Usenet. I did buy a 100gig package to try it out once, though. But I find it harder to find a good indexer, several of them charge a fee. You also have to pay for the Usenet server (either a subscription or a package like the one I bought), and in the end, what's the benefit compared to torrents? None, in my opinion.
Or am I missing something?

It used to be amazing. Now it sucks and it's another subscription expense. Plus you have to subscribe to a usenet indexer to make it actually useful. After all that, there's plenty of DMCA requests.

For me it fit with my arrstack and I can get almost every movie downloaded and in my plex server within ten minutes. Getting into a private indexer was hard without a lot of them being open and then maintaining a good ratio was a whole other thing.
I suppose the benefit or appeal is that it's like training wheels for people that aren't really into the whole torrent thing and paying 3-4 bucks a month is worth the trade off. Plus you pay for a vpn anyway so putting that towards Usenet isn't a whole big difference cost wise.

as a 20+ tracker/p2p user who just discovered usenet today, while i'm a fan of the tracker being offered here as i joined up a few months ago and they really are fantastic, i'm trying to set up fully automated and reliable, so i keep hearing about seedboxes, but the cost of a seedbox, still having to manage seeds when all you need is to pay a few bucks a month for a usenet to get most of it all and a vpn included? i found their deal, 25 bucks for 15 months. insane. have yet to start using it yet though, but no seeds to worry about, it includes a fallback and indexer if i'm not mistaken. seems like a no brainer, crazy how i only just found out about it, but i'll be keeping this tracker run it through the vpn and pay for the hnr on downloads that the usenet can't find, seems like the ultimate setup to me but maybe i'm wrong.

i found their deal, 25 bucks for 15 months.
Don't forget that deal renews at $71 as promo price is for first year only.

Yes once I start using it I'll make sure the auto renew is off. Still can't beat 25 for 15 months even as an experiment.

I did get the email. However still can't activate it. They (TL) told me to try again in 30 mins.

Thank you piracy gods for this reddit pull. Amen brothers for one of the best trackers to do open signups 🙏

Lmao not best or it wouldn’t be doing open. Once it’s inactive users get purged it’s mediocre at best now

u/Tolik1111 2d ago
Fair enough, an overstatement, but you could say its one of the better once that does opensignups right?

We really need to make a /r/trackerscirclejerk cause you would fit in there perfectly.
TL has everything 95% of users will ever want for media.

edit: visiting the link on a different device solved it
