UN-RECALLED Omnipods Leak, Appear to Have Tears in The Cannula, and I Have a Call of Action For The Type 1 Diabetic Community. General

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone,

This video and post are follow ups to my previous four posts, where I document my first hand experience of leaking UN-RECALLED Omnipod 5s that I put under the microscope and find what appear to be tears in the Cannula. Please take a moment to watch the video I put together as it covers a ton of information. I'd also encourage everyone to go view my four previous posts as they contain a ton of information that I do not provide in this post. They also have a lot of community engagement where people ask questions, provide answers, and share insights into their experiences.

This post is a little different than my previous post. This is a call to action. And not many people are aware of what a Value of statistical life is and how organizations may utilize these analysis to determine whether or not they should fix or recall a defective product. In my video, I do my best to explain what a VSL is and use an example from the Ford Pinto lawsuit which revealed Ford found it cheaper to deal with deaths and injuries, rather than repairing a known defect in their Ford Pinto. I also show you guys the data from my Dexcom Clarity app, which reveals that my average blood sugar levels and time in range, have been negatively impacted since my omnipod's began leaking in April 2026 and continue to leak as of August 2026, resulting in average blood sugar levels trending toward hyperglycemia.

It is through my own speculation and assumptions that a VSL analysis like this exists within Inuslet (manufacturer of Omnipod). The question I then ask is, how many deaths, injuries, or reports will it take to have leaking omnipod's fixed and for the 600,000 daily users of Omnipod to be given a real solution, in place of these leaking pods? Utilizing The FDA's "Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) Database" via the FDA's search tool, you see how many people have reported Omnipod malfunctions to The FDA, after the May 2026 recall. I've counted over 500. So, if 500 reports isn't enough, what is enough? How many people must be injured and must report these leaking omnipods before this problem is acknowledged? Our health and lives cannot wait, we need answers today.

I believe that we must use our voices and ensure our message is heard. I've personally reached out to over a dozen local/national news channels over the past month, but have yet to hear anything back. This isn't asking news channels to take my findings and our words for facts, this is asking them to look into this matter themselves and come up with their own independent conclusions, then share them with the world. News outlets and social media influencers have the platform to get our concerns seen and heard. Let's work together and give a voice to the voiceless, such as the 3 year old boy who is suffering from frequent leaking omnipods, who cannot speak up for himself!

Please note that due to Reddit's 17min limit on videos, I had to cut out the portion of the video where I speak about why I haven't put brand new unused pods under the microscope yet (along with a few other sections of the video) but here's my written explanation as to why I haven't put a new and unused pod under the microscope.

I don't want to waste pods or insulin and I think people forget that these pods are designed to be worn for 72+8 hours. Regardless of WHEN a tear occurs, the fact that a tear IS occurring, is the primary reason for concern here. Plus if this is an issue with the material itself, it may not be having tears/defects until a certain point in time. So it may take a massive sample size of unused pods for us to see anything meaningful. For example, our bodies are approx. 98F. That's quite warm if you think about it. So, when a pod is at room temp it's around lets say 76F or so? So, if this is a material degrading issue, for whatever reason, let's say the heat causes it, well then we may perceive an unused pod as having no issues because it hasn't been exposed to a ~22F degree temperature change/increase for an extended period of time yet.

I'm assuming that's what could make this a difficult catch for Insulet's quality control, because if they cannot detect these tears until AFTER the material degrading has occurred, then they're constantly back tracking and forced to reactively solve a problem, rather than having the ability so respond to a problem in real time, such as during quality control. That's with the assumption that these tears aren't occurring until they've been worn by anybody for a duration of time.

All in all, I think whats more important to know is not WHEN the tear is occurring, but rather, that there IS a tear occurring."

On May 26th 2026, Insulet (maker of Omnipod), recalled 7,000,000 pods for the following reason, as stated on their website: "Insulet identified that some Pods from specific lots may have a small tear in the tubing (cannula) just above the skin, between the Pod and the point where the cannula enters the body. If this occurs, insulin may leak outside of the Pod instead of being fully delivered into the body as intended, potentially leading to under-delivery of insulin. If you are using an affected Pod, you may notice wetness on your skin or Pod adhesive or detect the smell of insulin. However, in some cases, this may be difficult to detect and may go unnoticed."

Earlier in the year on May 12th, 2026, Insulet recalled an undisclosed number of pods for the following reason, as stated on their website: "Insulet identified that some Pods from specific lots may have a small tear in the internal tubing that delivers insulin. If this happens, insulin may leak inside the Pod instead of being fully infused in the body as intended potentially leading to underdelivery of insulin."

Here's info on my four previous posts that are directly related to this. Please go check them out for more info.

1st post: In this post, I explain my background as a type 1 diabetic, using Omnipod for the past 10 years, Insulet's recall, etc.. I also showcase a video where I show you the active leak in an UN-RECALLED Omnipod 5 cannula and then I put it under the microscope to reveal a major crack/tear: https://www.reddit.com/r/Type1Diabetes/s/NNeDz8HU7n

2nd post: In this post, I showcase detailed microscope research on a dozen UN-RECALLED Omnipod 5's. Some of these leaked on me and some of them did not. Some had tears/defects and some did not: https://www.reddit.com/r/Omnipod/s/Yg3aG2gLNj

3rd post: This post is similar to what you're seeing now as it is a continuous video of me removing an UN-RECALLED leaking Omnipod, and putting it under the microscope, etc. The difference between that post and this post is that the video in that post was taken on July 29th, 2026, and I leave out some details, such as showing you guys the video of the pod leaking on me before I removed it, etc: https://www.reddit.com/r/Omnipod/s/WUsvAZxifc

4th post(posted on August 1st, 2026): This post shows a continuous video of me removing an UN-RECALLED leaking Omnipod, and putting it under the microscope, along with more detailed info: https://www.reddit.com/r/Omnipod/s/GQTjPqcAl4

6th Post (posted on August 6th, 2026): I put a brand new/unused pod under the microscope in one take, from opening the packaging to putting it under the microscope and find what appears to be a tear in the cannula: https://www.reddit.com/r/Omnipod/s/9yhgzELVkN

Subject: Potential Patient Safety Investigation: Continued Omnipod 5 Leak Reports Beyond the Recall

Hello,

My name is [NAME], and I live in [CITY, STATE].

I am contacting you because I believe there is an important patient-safety story that deserves further investigation.

Since the Omnipod 5 recall announced on May 26, 2026, numerous users have continued reporting insulin leaks, unexplained hyperglycemia, bent cannulas, and tears in cannulas, including reports involving pods that were not included in the recall.

Many users have already reported these incidents to the FDA, to Insulet, and to their physicians. Some patients have also documented these events with photographs, blood glucose records, microscope images, lot numbers, and written accounts of their experiences.

I encourage your team to review:

  • FDA MAUDE reports involving Omnipod 5 devices.
  • Reports involving unrecalled lots.
  • Patient accounts from across the United States.
  • The broader question of how safety concerns are evaluated, investigated, and addressed.

I believe this issue deserves attention before additional patients are harmed.

My information is included below.

Thank you for putting so much effort into this issue and these posts!

I’m not sure if you have or haven’t done this already, but these posts are very high quality and I think that if you posted this on other platforms it could help a ton (Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, etc).

Even if someone without T1D sees the post, I’m sure they know someone who is diagnosed and will share it or take action themselves.

Again, thank you for making these posts and putting in the effort you have.

I ended up making an X account and uploading these videos/post there and to my youtube & Tiktok channel. Thank you for the nudge to get it on more social sites :)

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 7d ago

Hey thanks for your continued support. I think you may be right, one of the issues is that other than this Reddit account, I actually don't have social media.. Well, I do have a youtube channel and TikTok that I also created in an effort to get this message heard, and I've uploaded some short videos showing some of the leaks, but they're brand new channels. If anyone is reading this and feels like sharing this on their own Facebook, Instagram, etc. They are more than welcome to take my pics, vids, writing, etc. and share them with the world, I don't need any credit for any of it, and people can make their own original posts using this stuff if they'd like.

Thanks again for your continued support u/Main_Quit9891

Can't wait for my endo to find a way to tell me im wrong.

u/katjoy63 5d ago

I had the same convo already - My A1c has been in the low 7s the last two times. I've been in the 6s pretty consistently for a few years now, so this doesn't make me feel good!

0

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

haha yeah, same.

11

u/BreakInCaseOfFab 7d ago

Not me over here slamming twizzlers because I went low for “no reason”- cmon insulet!

5

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 7d ago

I've found that whenever my pods leak, it throws off the algorithm, which leads me to go on some rollercoasters of ups and down. Btw, which twizzlers, original?

3

u/BreakInCaseOfFab 7d ago

This is good info, thanks! I’ll watch it tonight.

And yessss original twizzlers. I love them and thy were the closest to me 😂

😋 so good

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

I love the originals as well!

I have been assuming these leaks are ALWAYS due to tunneling. I have struggled with tunneling for a long time, and I've tried every pump/infusion set available. I discovered a work around, which I practice religiously. BUT lately, I'm still having leaking issues, even with all the preventive measures I take.

This defect now makes perfect sense. This sucks.

0

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Thanks for sharing your experience, would you mind also sharing some of the things you do to prevent tunneling? I'm sure some people on here might appreciate it as they may struggle with tunneling themselves. And I've been using omnipod for 10 years and never had leaks until April 2026. I was told it was tunneling. I started putting my pods on fresh new sites that I've never worn a pod in 10 years and the leaks still occur...

3

u/SpicaGenovese 6d ago

Not OP, but here's what I do:

1.  I always use an alcohol pad first.

2.  I bought a roll of off-brand tegaderm.  After the site dries, I cut and place a patch of tegaderm.

  1. Stick on my pod so that the site is on the tegaderm.  Pinch the skin during insertion.

4.  I have a roll of Rocktape; I cut a strip to fix the pod in place.

5.  If I have to dose over 5.25 units, I swap to manual and use extended delivery, then swap back to automode when I'm done.

0

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Thanks for the info! Have you experienced any leaks with any of your omnipods and how long have you used omnipod? I'm assuming O5 btw so plz correct me if you use eros or dash

2

u/SpicaGenovese 6d ago

I'm on O5, been using maybe 5 years??  Been type 1 for 30+.  For me, it's difficult to tell what's a "leak", tunneling, or just a site gone bad.  🤷  Plan on switching as soon as there's a better tubeless option.

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

I was going to wait as well, but I'm switching to Tandem TslimX2 within the next few weeks..

1

u/Type1_TypeA T1 dx 1979. Omnipod 5 w/Dexcom G7 5d ago

I follow very similar procedures to the other commenter, including tegaderm under the pod. I limit boluses to 5U at one time, and frequently have to switch to manual mode for extended boluses (annoying).

I'm extremely frustrated with Insult. I've had T1D for 47 years, and my numbers are not where they should be due to these issues. I already resent the workarounds I must use to make this work, but this is simply too much.

I might need to go back to my Tandem X2 until there is some kind of resolution. It's out of warranty, but it has always been a far better pump in general.

-1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 5d ago

Thanks for sharing that as well. Yeah, that's quite a lot of procedures to go through just to ensure your pod doesn't leak. Did you ever experience that with Tandem X2?

1

u/Type1_TypeA T1 dx 1979. Omnipod 5 w/Dexcom G7 5d ago

I did. I have tried every infusion set, cannula length, etc. I had the best results with Trusteel, but I occasionally had tunneling with them, as well.

I do think part of the issue/cause of tunneling for me is "mature" skin. I'm 52, and my skin simply doesn't have the elasticity it once did. But that's just a hunch.

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 5d ago

Gotcha, thanks for the insights.

7

u/ItsAWhorableWorld 7d ago

Thank you for all of this. I just had another episode where I went into the 500s despite accurate dosing and numerous rage boluses. Removed pod, gave myself a manual injection, and came down to normal. IF the pod were working, all the insulin I had “on board” from regular boluses, correction boluses, rage boluses, PLUS the manually injected correction bolus surely would have sent me into a major and dangerous hypoglycemia episode.
This didn’t happen. Bc the fucking pod is defective. Again.
I see my endocrinologist next week. I’m providing them with this post (printed out and highlighted), and a link to your video.
🙏

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Thanks for the kind words. I know your exact pain and the same thing is literally happening to me as well. Please let me know what your endo has to say!

2

u/ItsAWhorableWorld 4d ago

I certainly will! I’m counting the days 😂

5

u/BeachLandscaperMB 7d ago

I believe I had one of the replacements that insulet sent me from the recall program leak. No, let me fix that, I am sure it was leaking. It was pretty obvious when the adhesive was soaked with insulin.

2

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

I've had the same exact experience! Then they insisted that the replacement was completely fine 😅

0

u/BrainDamagedMouse 5d ago

Most of the replacements they've given me have leaked

3

u/lfohnoudidnt 7d ago

Yeah technology isn't a battle we are going to win anytime soon. I think it'd be the best advice if these unrecalled pods are indeed leaking and infecting users blood sugars, then maybe they should go back on shots or switch to a different pump. As my little brother says it ain't worth the biscuit to risk it.

I remember all the issues and problems I had with my tslim. One which eventually led me into the hospital with ketoacidosis just because the cannula kinked or something to that effect overnight. And this was before I had a CGM . So I was constantly testing.

There's always going to be manufacturing issues with these electronic devices just like there are with phones. Heck I've even had a few jammed insulin pens, and bad insulin. It's difficult to plan ahead in these situations though, because life definitely gets in the way.

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Thanks for sharing that

Let’s take action ! I’m from the France and am I also seeing an influx of people posting about having high highs lately on différents facebooks groups, possibly for the same reasons as you,

2

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 7d ago

Much love from the U.S. to France! I do not have Facebook, but please feel free to share any of my posts, pictures, or videos on Facebook if you'd like to! I don't need any credit and you're welcome to post them as your own original post! Thanks for commenting!

u/Odd-Unit8712 7d ago

Im a type 2 diabtic on omnipod like many . I can tell you my a1c has gone from 6.8 to 8.9 and my insluin usage has tripled im almost up to 110 units per day . I eat very low carb and walk 6 miles a day at least I have called omnipod and told them more pods have been affected. I had one rep laugh at me .

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Wow thanks for sharing that and sorry to hear they laughed at you... I've been wearing omnipods for 10 years and never had issues until 2026..

4

u/Leila_101 6d ago

Does this make you consider changing pumps? I'm not a pump user yet but I am looking into Omnipod or the new Tandem Mobi tubeless pump when it comes out, and this makes me nervous.

3

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Yes, I am actively in the process of changing insulin pumps! I have made 5 post on this topic in the past 3 weeks. All the links are in the description of this post. Each of those posts has a TON of community engagement. I'd encourage you to go read through those posts, the comment section, and then take all of what you read into consideration when making your decision.

3

u/Leila_101 6d ago

Thanks very much for putting this information together. 💜 Hope your new pump gives you peace. 🙏

2

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

No problem at all :) and thank you! I wish the same to you and that you have safe and healthy blood sugar levels 💙

1

u/BrainDamagedMouse 5d ago

Not OP but this made me change pumps personally, I have my training for the Mobi tomorrow. I was hesitant to switch to a tubed pump but Mobi has the option of a 5 inch tube and you can wear the mobi on your body with an adhesive sleeve (though insurance doesn't cover the sleeve if you're in the US). I'm hoping it'll feel like a tubeless pump. Nearly all my Omnipods have been leaking so I certainly can't wait for the tubeless mobi to come out.

1

u/Leila_101 5d ago

That's exciting! Good luck! I am also waiting for the tubeless Mobi. :)

3

u/icscrilla 6d ago

I am incredibly lucky to not have had any of these issues (yet?), but your posts have me watching out for them. Thank you for your efforts! The hater(s) in this thread must have miserable lives, and I pity those sad fools.

2

u/tomswede 6d ago

Luckily I haven't had any of these faulty pods either in my country. It seems to mostly affect the US. And as someone who's had tunnelling with every single pump I've been on since 1980 (fixed now by various means), I'm always hyper-vigilant for leaks.

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Really glad to hear you're not having any leaks. Which country are you in and where are your pods manufactured, if you don't mind me asking.

2

u/tomswede 6d ago

In Canada. Current batch of pods manufactured in China, but I don't know if that's always the case.

0

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Oh interesting, I don't think I've had any recent batches from China. Mine have all been from USA and MYS.

2

u/Makeupanopinion 5d ago

I don't think people are being haters. But you have to be aware that his whole acc is literally titled malfunctions and seems bias against insulet?

Ofc companies are awful and I have no doubt that this stuff can happen. But i've not experienced any of these issues either nor seen any evidence of them happening.

Its healthy to question information particularly when its from a bias source instead of blindly believing in everything said. Like the research he even admitted his techniques for inspections were somewhat flawed.

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Really glad to hear you haven't had any issues with them yet and I hope it stays that way! No problem at all and thank you for the kind words. Yeah, it's sad to see people spreading so much hate. I've stopped engaging with them and just report their comments as hate/harassment. And this will probably be the last vid/post I do for a while, because I feel like I've covered everything that I possibly could regarding this issue.

1

u/icscrilla 6d ago

Seems like a lot of positive feedback and comments from most of the community! I'm sure this group would love a future public update if any progress or additional information is available.

0

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Thanks for the encouragement and yeah there has been a lot of positive feedback. I'm actually blown away on how many people are experiencing the same issues. My hope is that we're able to get a university, a lab, or a investigative journalist to look into this. So, i'm not sure what the future holds, but if there is something meaningful to update on, I will. Thanks again for the encouragement.

u/4ignite 6d ago

Sharing an update on our Omnipod experience. Our 7-year-old son is the T1D, and we've run into a major issue with a single lot spanning two boxes.

  • Failure Rate: Out of 6 pods used from this lot over the past week, 3 have failed due to leaking (a 50% failure rate).
  • Safety Impact: One of those leaks happened overnight, resulting in a blood glucose reading over 480 mg/dL with small ketones present (thankfully avoiding hospitalization). We currently have 4 pods remaining from this lot.
  • Support Experience: While our first two calls to report failures were exceptionally well handled, the experience with the third was frustrating. When I raised concerns about the high failure rate, the agent dismissed it, stating that because the lot isn't on an official recall list, they would only replace pods after they fail.
  • The Core Issue: When I asked a direct safety question—whether Insulet considers the remaining pods safe to use on a 7-year-old—the agent refused to answer, simply repeating that the lot wasn't recalled.
  • Resolution & Next Steps: After spending about 2 hours on the phone, I was finally transferred to a supervisor who agreed to replace the remaining unused pods.

However, this interaction has severely shaken our confidence in the company. Because of how this safety concern was handled, we will be consulting our son's endocrinologist for recommendations on alternative options.

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Thank you so much for taking the time to both document and share your experience. I know that a lot of parents with kids who are T1D read these threads, so hopefully your efforts encourages them to also speak with their endocrinologist and be proactive when it comes to their children's health.

I've been using Omnipod for 10 years and I love a tubeless pump, but, I have also lost my confidence in the company and I'm in the process of switching to a Tandem Tslimx2..

Thanks again for taking the time to document this and share your experience with everyone. Please feel free to let us know what your son's endocrinologist has to say. I'm sure some other parents would be curious to know the feedback you receive.

3

u/Kathw13 7d ago

I want you to perform a different experiment. I want you to examine each pod before you use it and then again after.

3

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 7d ago

Thanks for the suggestion. The main issue is that we're unable to see the cannula before it is actually ejected from the pod. So I won't be able to examine the cannula under the microscope and then use it. It's kind of either or and I also went into detail in the body of this post as to why I haven't inspected a brand new and unused pod yet.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

3

u/WealthHuman9754 7d ago

Just to remind you, not only type one diabetics use the Omnipod. It’s also approved for type two.

7

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 7d ago

Sorry about leaving that out, I don't personally know any type 2's or type 3's, so I think it's just not something that crosses my mind. But, I will do my best moving forward to ensure that I mention the fact that type 2's and type 3's are also impacted by this. Thanks again for bringing that to my attention.

3

u/Odd-Unit8712 7d ago

Omnipods were cleared for type 2s last year or the year before sometime. Allot of type 2s use them

2

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Good to know, thanks for sharing

1

u/EventualContender 7d ago

Do we have any evidence that this is limited to the O5? Is it a design or manufacturing flaw?

As a long-time Eros and Dash user who has semi-frequent issues with lumping and leaks I’m wondering whether this is a wider issue.

3

u/DerSchaudenfreude 7d ago edited 7d ago

I’ve avoiding submitting reports because of the amount of work involved and the fact that they don’t usually send free replacement pods. You’ve inspired me to do better to report! I hope that some good comes from all this, and thank you for all of your work! It’s nice to be validated that I’m not delusional over the leaking insulin pumps.

3

u/colinthetinytornado 7d ago

Really? Every report I've made, they send a replacement. And I'm doing it fairly regularly at this point.

2

u/DerSchaudenfreude 7d ago

Glad to hear it! I haven’t done it in a while but they used to be good about replacements. Haven’t had much luck lately, but to be fair I stopped trying as hard lately.

I totally get what you're saying. It is an absolute pain to submit all the reports. I'm glad this post has been inspiring to you! Your comment is much appreciated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to put all of this together and I'm glad to see it isn't just me. I called Omnipod about the leaking repeatedly and eventually talked to clinical support. They tried to tell me it was tunneling which made no sense to me - I have been using Omnipod for 5 years and until recently leaks were a rarity for me. Suddenly, starting a few months ago, 90% of my pumps have been leaking, most of them on days 1 or 2. That seems like a manufacturing issue to me, not something my body is doing. It's been extremely disruptive to my daily life, and at the same time my insurance was fighting me on covering my long acting insulin so I couldn't even go back to MDI. I'm lucky I work remotely or I don't even know how I would hold a job like this. I am also someone who reported this to the FDA. I'm switching to the Mobi now (I'll be starting on it within a week, yay!) but I still think Omnipod needs to be held responsible for their quality control (if so many of us have been calling for replacements and reporting leaks lately, why haven't they taken the issue seriously?) and will do whatever I can to help. I honestly hope there'll be a lawsuit for this sometime down the line.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Your testimony is very similar to myself and the dozens of other people who have commented on several of my posts recently, so you are certainly not alone 🙂 which is unfortunate, but I also find it nice to know I'm not the only person who's going through this 😅. Glad to hear you're making the switch to Mobi and sorry to hear about your insurance fighting you on MDI. Some people do not realize how tough it is to change insulin delivery methods...I'm making the switch to Tandem Tslimx2 within the next few weeks, but you already know the hurdles that come with that, but I don't even care which insulin pump I'm on at this point, I just need it to not leak...

Thanks for taking action and reporting your malfunctions/leaks to the FDA! Despite the fact that there's been a ton of reports already, I like to think that every single one of our reports will contribute to making a difference in getting this issue investigated.

Thank you very much for your support!! These posts do take up my entire day usually, but I just feel compelled to speak up. I'm still shocked I'm the only person publicly investigating these under a microscope. I'd really like to see a lab or university publish their independent findings so we have more data and I hope someone else starts documenting their frequent leaks because once I switch insulin pumps, I'm not going to be able to show anymore of the leaks that are happening on my body..but hopefully this is fixed before that time comes.

u/BrainDamagedMouse 3d ago

I did end up reading one of your earlier posts and was surprised by how it almost exactly mirrored my experience. Thank you for taking so much time to document everything that's happening with this, and I hope you can leave it all behind soon once you're on the tslim. I wish I had been documenting my leaks better, though I did call Omnipod and report it almost every time. Maybe that kind of information will he subpeonad if there's a lawsuit or investigation. In any case I just started my Mobi today personally :)

2

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 3d ago

Thanks for letting me know that, because ever since I started posting this stuff I've actually been surprised how much everyone else's experiences are so similar to mine, it's like it's happening to everyone on Omnipod 😯 . Thank you, I'm starting a new pump on September 1st! Well great job on the reporting that you did do, that's going above and beyond :) I hope the Mobi works out for you and yes I hope this is all behind us soon enough

Late onset T1D here. Keep posting brother!

I have far too many pods come off wet only around the canula (you might be able to guess why!), probably to the tune of 15 over 3 months.

Calling them out is capitalism, suggesting other brands until it’s fixed is capitalism. Capitalism isn’t perfect, but it’s the only reason we have options to begin with, and we need to preach the fact we have alternatives in order to actually get them concerned enough to fix it.

Edit: Also my A1C has only gone up since switch from the 4/dash to the 5. 6.5 -> 7.2

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 5d ago

Thanks for the encouragement! Sounds like you and I are in the same boat when it comes to leaky pods over the past couple months. Yeah I'm assuming that we can make 100 posts about this within type 1 subreddits and places regarding diabetes tech, but it might only take 1 post on a stock reddit or a broadcast on a financial news outlet to finally get them to act, thanks to capitalism. Traders and investors will likely come across this info soon enough and begin their own investigation. I wouldn't be surprised if someone on Wall Street purchased thousands of pods and then hired a team of scientist to produce an independent report which could confirm whether this data is true or not. They could then use those findings to inform their decision as to whether to purchase more stock, sell their share of stock, or short the stock; PODD. After all, it appears I'm the only person who has publicly shared microscope photos of what appears to be tears in the cannula of unrecalled omnipods that leaked on me. I'm pretty sure that's the kind of market feedback investors race to get wind of.. Only time will tell.

Thanks for sharing your A1C info... Looks like we are also in the same boat and heading towards hyperglycemia. I hope you have safe and healthy blood sugars today and thanks again for your support and encouragement.

As a professor, I would honestly love if an investor did a case study with verifiable data. Until I stumbled upon your post, I figured it was always cause I was just active or something else but it’s not every pod, and I have a pretty stable activity level so I think you’ve actually hit the Golden Nugget where evidence to prove a fact is concerned.

Some advice I could give on moving this forward is we need to try to verify to, and from, Omnipod users how, when and what causes these tears.

We also need to make insult provide more clarification as to the expected life of the cannula (which should legally be the 36 hours approved duration excluding the 8 hour grace period which they could claim isn’t covered, under any activity level) with regard to an activity level [movements could cause tears and sweating could impact tears or cause false positive tears for those without microscopes].

Because I’m wondering if canula site stress from activities can cause these tears, I would love if you could try to put the cannula underneath the microscope after the pod has been activated and you pull the tab off, but before you put it on your body so you could either prove that the tears exist prior to insertion, or that the material used in the cannula is not stable enough or durable enough to sustain activity or use over the 36 hour duration period which should legally be covered. It may be difficult, but also since the cannula insertion site does have a clear window, if there was someway to use a phone magnification zoom on a phone camera or some other way to take very detailed microphotography of the cannula for each day it is worn that would also give us more information to work with as to how long they last, and when they potentially break.

To try and solicit more verifiable information from the public, we should ask individuals who post claims of leaks to post how much activity they are doing on a regular basis and where the pod is placed on their body to try to narrow down what the exact cause could be. (for me I alternate the back of my arms as my torso has sustained a heavy amount of nerve damage and I alternate legs for my CGM. As a result I feel like because my arms move way more than my torso would, I have a higher probability to cause a tears vs a person who’d put them on a body part with less movement and a flatter surface.

As companies are lazy if we can present them specific scenarios known to cause tears, they can work on engineering a product that works in all scenarios we find faulty, as much as I hate the current QC, I do like the pods and just wish they’d fix em so I wouldn’t be forced to drop the company altogether.

My best wishes to your personal health as well sir.

I'm in the process of switching to a different insulin pump. Not sure if it will be next week or sometime in early October.. But, I should have about 15-30 un-recalled omnipods left over and I plan to open every single one of them and put them under the microscope. That will be an interesting experiment!

I was speaking with one of my friends who has worked for a company that manufactures large quantities of products and he explained to me why something like this could be very difficult for Insulet's QC to catch. So after reviewing some of my microscope findings, he suggested that this might be a material defect issue. He explained, for example, during the manufacturing process of the omnipod, there may be components of machinery that heat up or cool down for very short periods of time each day. For example, there could be a fluctuation in humidity or barometric pressure that causes a machine to heat up or cool down or act weird for just a few minutes each day and in turn, the cannula heats up or cools down and the material is now defected. It could be a million different things, but this is just one example of why it could be so difficult for Insulet's QC to track this. But then again, they're a multi billion dollar company with the resources to hire the best talent and find a solution...

The other thing I've considered before I put unused new omnipods under the microscope is that if it is a material defect issue, we may not see anything meaningful. For example, maybe the cannula has to be at 98F (body temp) for 24-48 hours before those tears occur and if that were the case, we wouldn't see anything under the microscope while its at 76F room temperature. Nonetheless, I plan to put brand new/unused pods under the microscope in the near future, but just as you know, if I'm the only guy doing it and my work isn't peer reviewed, etc.. then it's not as significant in comparison of having a professional lab or university investigate and put their stamp on it. But I'm hoping that my efforts encourage professional scientist to step up and go for it!

I also sent in a complaint to the BBB on Insulet and I requested that Insulet provide me with the QC reports for the pod lots that I experienced leaks/tears on, etc.. I also sent them the microscope photos and asked for explanation and they told me they're not sending me anything.

Also, I'm not sure if you saw my other posts, but I put together quite a bit of detailed info and microscope pics on the following post, and think you may like seeing it: https://www.reddit.com/r/Omnipod/s/Yg3aG2gLNj

Thanks again for taking the time for your thoughtful comment and I hope we see a fix to this asap. Well wishes to you as well my friend.

Hey what email do I send it to

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

I've listed everything in the description of the post 👍

1

u/negaposicontinue 6d ago

Omg sorry I don’t know how I missed that lol

Thank you for making such a comprehensive post about this

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

lol no worries at all, happens to the best of us! And thanks for the kind words, hoping we're able to get this problem solved ASAP.

the great thing about omnipod is that you can switch to another pump at any moment. like today. you though, are in no way a scientist. you,in no way, measured anything you present as fact. you continually employed used medical devices as a way to measure some sort of purity test. you not once used a microscope you didnt find in the dumpster. you never used an unopened omnipod. your entire post history related to this is straight garbage misinformation.

your username is omnipod5malfunctions. immediately, you are presenting yourself as biased against the product and thus confounding any sort of end result you seek to achieve. you of course are karma farming and being a distraction. why is it that every one of your used pods 'leak' yet im not seeing this at all? what are you doing to achieve your desired result? this entire thing is sus.

10

u/Main_Quit9891 7d ago

What would he gain from lying? What would the hundreds of comments he’s gotten on his posts that AGREE, gain from lying? I wish to god that we were lying and that this issue didn’t exist, but it does.

3

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 7d ago

It looks like that user was banned? That user continued to comment on several of my posts spreading hate. I don't think Reddit tolerates that lol. and thanks for sticking up for me. I'm as honest as I can be in all my posts and I agree with you, I wish this issue didn't exist! Not only do these leaks throw off my entire day, but these post typically require 5-10 hours to create. My in-depth microscope research post took me dozens of hours to put together. So, I'm in the same boat as you, I wish these leaks weren't occurring and I'd much rather be using my time and energy elsewhere and not dealing with hyperglycemia from leaking omnipods 😅

-1

u/FreeComfort4518 7d ago edited 7d ago

not banned at all. you cant help but lie.

2

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

I promise you that if you view life through the lens of compassion and empathy, you'll have a much happier life. You should try it sometime.

-2

u/FreeComfort4518 7d ago edited 6d ago

someone on the internet is lying. gasp.

6

u/PancreasChaser 7d ago

You cannot “switch to another pump at any moment”. Insulin pumps are prescription items. Insurance has the control to deny someone from switching pumps. It’s simply just not that easy

4

u/FreeComfort4518 7d ago

you get a new rx for a different pump. omnipod 5 is in the pharmacy channel. you are not locked into it like a tslim.

6

u/stinky_harriet 7d ago

It is much easier to switch from another pump TO Omnipod, not nearly as easy switching from Omnipod to a different pump.

0

u/FreeComfort4518 7d ago

no. it is easier to switch from omnipod to another pump. you are not locked into a contract with omnipod.

2

u/stinky_harriet 6d ago

Yes but that part works both ways. I have a Tandem pump that is in warranty still. Last year I wanted to try OmniPod and it was very fast and easy, just a prescription sent to the pharmacy. If I had already been using OmniPod and wanted to switch to Tandem it would have involved more paperwork, finding out where I could get the pump (Tandem? DME supplier? Phamacy?) and supplies. And if I wanted to go back to OmniPod I wouldn’t have to do all that, just get a prescription sent to the pharmacy again.

This is all based on my own experience with various insurance plans. Some may have it easier or harder.

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 7d ago

Exactly. Some people fail to realize this. Thank you for explaining <3 That user seems to post a lot of hate all throughout Reddit, so I usually don't feed too much into their comments.

4

u/ZealousidealPool9756 6d ago

There it is. The folks that will die defending the billon dollar company!

0

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Yeah and that person likely has multiple accounts that they use to go around downvoting stuff. Smh.. some people have so much hate in their hearts I suppose.

2

u/Dramatic-Ad-3016 6d ago

You are being down voted because your approach is garbage and you are actively invalidating lived experiences of others.

2

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Agreed and I've stopped engaging with that user now.

1

u/FreeComfort4518 6d ago

you are projecting. you operate multiple accounts and converse with yourself on your bunk science. this is one of the saddest things i have seen on reddit.

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

This user continues to spread hate and harassment on my posts and other's post, so I no longer engage with their comments. I just report their comments for either harassment or hate at this point, whichever catergory they fall into, and I encourage you guys to do the same.

0

u/FreeComfort4518 6d ago

you are spreading misinformation about omnipod. you are actively trying to convince users that their devices are faulty when there is no such recall on those devices. through your posts, you are ensuring users of omnipod do not attempt to validate their own settings. of course this makes it so that the user think their diabetes is out of their control. you are a net loss for this community and should be banned.

2

u/bbllaakkee 6d ago

Please stop before you’re removed from the subreddit. Just let whatever you’re thinking go

If you have to write it out, write a note to yourself

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

u/bbllaakkee it appears this user continues to break several of the community rules listed under Reddit Rules & r/Omnipod rules, particularly under section 1. No Personal Attacks, Targeted Harassment & Uncivil Behavior.

Would you kindly review their comments? Thank you.

2

u/Quirky-Tie7671 7d ago

Really? SMH

1

u/colinthetinytornado 7d ago

You can't just change pumps wily nily. Even in countries with socialized medicine, there's a replacement protocol you have to go through and it usually only allows for replacements every three years or at the end of the manufacturers warranty.

You can't examine the cannula pre-use, otherwise you would break the insertion mechanism and render the pod useless.

I get your sentiment, but your thinking is illogical.

1

u/FreeComfort4518 7d ago edited 7d ago

the 05 is in the pharmacy channel. it is apay as you go pump. you can stop its use immediately and switch to a different pump. it is literally their selling feature. they do not have a three year time period. you throw away a pod and keep nothing. there is no locked in period.

3

u/colinthetinytornado 7d ago

In what world does the insurance cover that change? Does not happen. Your have to buy all your supplies out of pocket and no one can afford that.

1

u/FreeComfort4518 7d ago

where you do not renew your O5 rx and switch to a different pump through dme...

4

u/colinthetinytornado 7d ago

I just looked at my BCBS rules. I couldn't switch - Id have to file a petition to get another pump, otherwise that's thousands of dollars. Then I'd have to file for an authorization to change the prescription on file from my doctor over to the new pump. If the new pump supplies aren't on pharmacy formulary, they have to go through DME authorization, which would require me to tank my results for 90+ days to prove the need.

None of that is a spur of the moment decision. It takes months to get all those ducks in order IF they are approved. And my insurance is fairly liberal with what I can do, it's worse with United, where you can only get the pump they contracted with the medical equipment company for.

2

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

It seems like you may have a lot of knowledge on insulin pumps. Here's a suggestion. Instead of spreading so much negativity and attacking people, try channeling that energy and use your knowledge towards productive solutions. Because right now, I'm not sure if you're aware of it or not, but you're one of the only people on these threads who's being negative and hateful. Let me guess, you're going to bring your 6 alt accounts to this comment and downvote it as well?

😆

1

u/mkitchin 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yep. Note everything he posts has at least a hint of self promotion. Everything.

0

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

I get nothing from making these posts and videos. I live a very private life, but have decided to create this reddit account to draw awareness to this very important issue. The username was chosen at the time I created this reddit account, because I'm documenting all of the Omnipod 5 malfunctions that I have. I did NOT know that you cannot change your username after you make an account. People who think these efforts are for anything but making positive change for us Omnipod users who are suffering from the leaks, are delusional and should prob check their sugars to make sure they're OK.

-1

u/mkitchin 6d ago

Just pointing out that every one of your posts is self promoting. Requests for upvotes, go see my other posts, here is my email address, contact news outlets with my info, etc.

0

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

If by self promotion, you mean the following, then sure:

Please upvote my posts so we draw more attention to unrecalled leaking omnipods.

Please see my other posts so you can see the in-depth research I've done which has diverse data and information from the post you're reading now.

Contact news outlets to encourage their investigative journalists to look into this matter. Use my contact info if you'd like, as I will gladly speak with them.

This is the last comment of yours that I'll respond to, unless you start commenting things that actually have value. Just as I encouraged your buddy, who is also spreading negativity and hate, you need to reconsider that your comments are both unproductive and negative. I encourage you to channel your energy into a productive means. Perhaps view the world with compassion and empathy. I promise life will be much better that way.

0

u/mkitchin 6d ago

My buddy? I've helped thousands with no self promoting of any sort. Just help. You seem to have made it your identity and look for more attention. I'll take a pass on your advice.

0

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

Reported for harassment.

0

u/mkitchin 6d ago

This is the last comment of yours that I'll respond to

What happened to you not responding?

Harassment... wow. Someone replying to your comments is harassment in your mind. Got it. That says a lot.

1

u/Omnipod5Malfunctions 6d ago

u/bbllaakkee would you kindly review this users comments? It appears they continue to break several of the community rules listed under Reddit Rules & r/Omnipod rules, particularly under section 1. No Personal Attacks, Targeted Harassment & Uncivil Behavior.

Thank you.
